HESS

Sylvia Hess

Sylvia Hess, resident of Woodland for nearly 30 years died peacefully at her home on her 84th birthday, Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003. She was born and raised in Tacoma, Wash. and attended college in Pullman at Washington State University. She was an active member of Chi Omega Sorority. Upon leaving school in 1940, she marriage and lived for many years in Nanches and then Quincy, Wash. on an apple ranch with her husband, Willard, who preceded her in death in 1975. After moving to Woodland, she worked as a Certified Nurses Aide at UC Davis Student Health Center until her retirement in 1991 at age 73.

In addition to her work with students at UCD, she enjoyed oil painting as well as camping, time at the ocean and trips to Hawaii with her family. Immediately upon retirement, she became trained as a volunteer with the Woodland Literacy Council, providing adults from Yolo County an opportunity to learn to read. In 1993, she received recognition from the Literacy Council as "Tutor of the Year." She helped many over the following 8 years until she again retired to play golf on a nearly daily basis with her companion of many years, John "Red" Hayes, who preceded her in death this year.

Mrs. Hess's son, Dan preceded her in death in 2000. She is survived by her daughter, Judy Walden of Honolulu, Hawaii; daughter-in-law, Betty Hess-Pierce of Davis; a grandson, Scott Hess of Miami; four granddaughters, Kristin Hughes of Albuquerque, Lisa Walden of San Diego, Tonya weaver of Minneapolis and Tiffany Dodge of Los Gatos. She was a great-grandmother of seven ranging in age from six months to eight years. A quiet and very caring person, she will be missed by family and the many friends she touched.

A memorial service will be conducted at St. John's Retirement Village Chapel, 135 Woodland Ave., Woodland on Friday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. The family requests memorials be directed to Woodland Public Library, Literacy Services, 250 First St., Woodland, 95695.

HEWITT

Susan Louise Hewitt

Susan Louise Hewitt died at Sutter Roseville Hospital Monday, March 31, 2003, at age 87.

Born Oct. 5, 1915, in Lindsay, Mrs. Hewitt was marriage to Asa Hewitt in 1936. She was a homemaker. She was involved with Cub Scouts, and Brownie Scouts.

Survivors include her son, Richard Hewitt and wife Shelby of Ennis, Mont.; daughter, Cindy Hain-Giese and husband Ron of Woodland; grandsons, Brian Hewitt and wife Laurie of Suquamish, Wash., Greg Hain of Davis and Jon Hain and wife Lisa of Woodland; great-grandchildren, Calvin and Claire Hewitt; and niece, Leslie Ann Murray and husband Brian of Manila, Philippines.

The family requests memorials be directed to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 2300 Edison Ave., Sacramento, 95821.

Arrangements are under the direction of McNary's Chapel of Woodland.

Services: Respecting the wishes of Mrs. Hewitt, no services are scheduled.

HEYDEN

Eleonore K. Heyden

Eleonore K. Heyden, former resident of Davis, died May 11, 2004, in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Lyle Mills of Woodland, with whom she had been living. She was 95 years old.

She was born in Indianapolis, Ind., on April 25, 1908, to Gustav and Marie Kistner. She moved to Southern California in 1941 where she and her husband raised their family.

She was very active with volunteer work in her church. She remained involved after her move to Davis in 1982, where she became a devoted member of Our Faith Lutheran Church, by helping with the Sunday bulletins and phone calling. She continued helping with the church bulletins until one month before her death.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her, her family says.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Walter Heyden, on Sept. 21, 1983.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Mills and her husband Lyle of Woodland; and son, Walter Heyden and his wife Gail of Southern California. She enjoyed many special and happy moments with her six grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

A funeral will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St. Interment will follow at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road.

DELMAGE

John Houston Delmage

John Houston Delmage died at his home in Knights Landing Sunday, April 10, 2005 at age 86.

Mr. Delmage was born March 24, 1919 in Manitoba, Canada to William and Mary Lamb Delmage. He had been a Yolo County resident for 20 years. He graduated from Portage High School in Indiana in 1937. He served during World War II, from 1942 to 1945, as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army. While in the service, he earned a number of service medals including two Purple Hearts, four Bronze Stars and two Presidential Unit Citations. After the war, Mr. Delmage worked as a crane operator in the steel industry for 42 years. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1985 of Woodland.

Survivors include Mr. Delmage's wife of 64 years, Bette Delmage of Knights Landing; his daughters, Jackie Wilson of Woodland and Cyndi Putnam of Clayton; his son, Mitch Delmage of Knights Landing; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his sisters, Eva Udick and Muriel Schavy and his brother, Mervin Delmage all of Portage, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Delmage; his sister, Elsie Oswald and his brother, Clifford Delmage.

Services: Visitation is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 15 at Evergreen Funeral Chapel, 327 College St., Woodland. A funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16 at Victory Praise Tabernacle, 42236 Fourth St., Knights Landing with Pastor Jim McLean officiating. Interment will follow the service at Knights Landing Cemetery. Evergreen Funeral Service of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

DELOREFICE

Vivian N. Jacobson Delorefice

Vivian N. Jacobson Delorefice, 78, of Vacaville, passed away at home on July 9, 2004. She was born in Savo, South Dakota and lived in the Berkeley/El Cerrito area until moving to Vacaville in 1982.

Vivian was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a compassionate and loyal friend to many. Poetry writing, stamp collecting and family genealogy were among her many interests.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Judy Delorefice of Fairfield and Dan and Patricia Delorefice of Winters; daughter Diana Patrette of Vacaville; grandsons Daryl Delorefice and Todd Delorefice of Fairfield, Guy Delorefice of Healdsburg, Beau Patrette of Woodland, Chad Patrette of Dixon; granddaughters Dawn Delorefice of Eugene, Oregon, Erin Delorefice of Santa Monica, Juli Delorefice of Natomas, Danielle Delorefice of Woodland and Allison Delorefice of Winters; six great-grandchildren.

A private memorial gathering with family and friends will be held July 24 in Winters. Memorial contributions are preferred, and may be sent to North Bay Hospice Foundation, 1300 Oliver Road, Fairfield, CA 94534.

DELWICHE

Constant Collin Delwiche

Constant Collin Delwiche died Sept. 22, 2001. Born on Nov. 27, 1917, he was 83 years old. He was known for his work at UC Berkeley and UC Davis and his participation in the military, but his interests ranged far beyond that.

Born as a twin in Green Bay, Wis., to a family of seven siblings, he was raised in an agricultural community and took on responsibilities in the family dairy farm early in his youth.

He attended a one-room school for most of his childhood. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1939 from the University of Wisconsin. In 1940 he moved to Berkeley to begin his doctoral work at the University of California. It was there that he met Alice Kerr, who was to become his wife.

His college years were interrupted, as were many others, by World War II, in which he served in the 88th Infantry Glider Division.

After returning home from the war, he completed his doctoral work at Berkeley, receiving a Ph.D. in geo-micro-biochemistry. He remained on the faculty in Berkeley until 1963, when he moved his family to Davis. He continued to work at the university in the department of soils and plant nutrition.

In 1974, he retired as a major general commanding the 91st Division of the U.S. Army Reserve. He retired from UC Davis in 1990. There he had served as the chairman of the department of land, air and water resources. After his retirement from UC Davis, he served as the interim head of the National Institute on Global Environmental Change.

Delwiche's wide range of talents included being a private pilot, ham radio operator, amateur astronomer and artisan. He built much of his own furniture, his home and the equipment for his hobbies; and did his own electronics, plumbing, carpentry and even optics, grinding his own telescope mirrors.

He restored old cars and engines, was an avid horticulturist and a storyteller and made his own pickles.

He participated in the building of the St. James Church and the University Faculty Club at UC Davis. He was involved in the Emeritus Association at UC Davis, and was a member of the Yolo Amateur Radio Society and other professional and amateur societies. As his sons grew up, he was a leader in youth organizations, including Boy Scouts and 4-H.

His friends, family and colleagues knew him as an energetic contributor to the community. He will be missed.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alice K. Delwiche of Davis; and sons, Norman E. Delwiche and his wife Annemette of Okanogan, Wash., Mark E. Delwiche of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Joseph C. Delwiche and his wife Terry of Lakewood, Colo.; James A. Delwiche of Grass Valley; Richard C. Delwiche of San Francisco; and Charles F. Delwiche of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by six grandchildren.

Friends are invited to attend a funeral at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church, 200 W. 14th St. in Davis. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

DEMARTINI

Albert Joseph DeMartini

Albert Joseph DeMartini died surrounded by his family, Friday, March 15, 2002, at Woodland Memorial Hospital, at age 81.

Born on Aug. 24, 1920, Mr. DeMartini was a native of North Beach in San Francisco, he was a well known Sutter Basin farmer since 1943.

He attended the Salesian's Boys School and Galileo High School. Before moving to Yolo County, he worked as a share holder of the San Francisco Scavenger Association.

Mr. DeMartini loved to farm, hunt and play golf, said family members. He was one of the founders of "the Italians Vs. the World Golf Tournament, " a popular event since 1964 at the Yolo Fliers Country Club. He was a member of the Elks Club and Italian Catholic federation.

He loved people and will be remembered as an honest, loving person by his many friends, according to his family, who noted he lived a full life and will be deeply missed.

Mr. DeMartini is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elsye Giusti DeMartini and children, Diane DeMartini Naekel, Joan Warren, Laura Sachs and Bret DeMartini. He has 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His grandchildren include, Julie Mifsud, Amy Conn, Kristen Tadlock, Marcus Klinkhammer, Elizabeth Thompson, Matthew Warren, Daniel Sachs, Davis Sachs, Francis DeMartini and Guiliano DeMartini.

he is also survived by sons-in-law Garry Warren and Jim Naekel and daughter-in-law Cindy DeMartini.

Visitation is scheduled at 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 19, with the Rosary at 7 p.m., at McNary's Chapel in woodland.

The funeral mass is scheduled at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 20, at Holy Rosary church in Woodland.

The family requests memorials be directed to St. Jude's Hospital, The Salesian's Boys Club of San Francisco or to a charity of the donors' of choice.

McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.
