HAUSSLER

Robert Reed Haussler, Sr.

Robert Reed Haussler Sr. died peacefully July 14, 2004, at his home in Davis. He was 89 years old, and had lived in Yolo County nearly his entire life.

Born Jan. 28, 1915, in Davis to Gustav and Gladys Haussler, he was a member of a pioneer Davis family. He attended elementary and high school in Davis, graduating in 1934. He later attended UC Berkeley until World War II.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and was sent to Rutgers University by the Army to finish his engineering degree. After graduating in 1944, he was sent to France and Germany to build bridges. In 1945, he returned to the United States and worked for PG&E in the construction of heavy-duty power lines to Bakersfield.

He returned to Davis in 1948 and farmed with his father and brother, Kenneth, until 1985 when the farm was sold.

He joined the Masonic Lodge in 1946 and was a member for 58 years until his death. In 1957, he succeeded his father as secretary of the lodge and held that position until 1994.

He joined the Davis Volunteer Firefighters in 1952 and stayed active in the organization until 1980. During that time, he became a fire commissioner and held that post for 25 years.

He was also very active in other organizations, such as the Shriners. He was Worthy Patron for the Ione Chapter of the Eastern Star on numerous occasions, and was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6949, for many years.

Haussler was affectionately known around Davis as "Barefoot Bob" for his disdain of wearing shoes or boots, whether he was irrigating or hiking through stubble fields after harvest. In his later years, he could be seen riding his blue and chrome three-wheeled bicycle all through East Davis, stopping and visiting with everyone who was out and about.

"We love him and will miss him, " his family said.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mollyellen Petersen Haussler of Davis; daughters, Molly Ann Lipelt and her husband Kay of Davis and Doreen Hansen and her husband Bill of Sonora; son, Robert Haussler Jr. of Davis; grandchildren, Mark Lipelt of Sacramento, Katrina Lipelt of Davis, Kristina Zanker of Tracy and Brett Hansen of North Carolina; and great-granddaughter Wendy Zanker of Tracy.

A service will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the University Covenant Church, 315 Mace Blvd. in Davis, followed by interment at 11:30 a.m. at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road.

Remembrances may be sent to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617 or the Shriners Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817.

Arrangements are under the direction of the North Sacramento Funeral Home.

HAWKES

Glenn Rogers Hawkes

Glenn Rogers Hawkes, a longtime administrator at UC Davis and an early developer of Project Head Start, died of natural causes on March 9, 2004, at the University Retirement Community in Davis. He was 84.

Born April 29, 1919, in Preston, Idaho, Hawkes was the sixth of 11 children born to William and Rebecca Hawkes of Preston.

Hawkes provided leadership for applied social sciences at UCD for more than two decades and then, after retirement in 1989, devoted the next several years to nurturing an international exchange between foreign professionals and students and UCD.

Reared in rural Idaho on a homestead farm, Hawkes remembered his family raising dry-farmed wheat, corn and livestock. After being drafted in 1941, Hawkes served as a counselor in the U.S. Army during World War II. He returned to college after his military service to complete undergraduate work in psychology at Utah State University. He went on to complete a doctorate in educational psychology from Cornell University in New York in 1950.

Hawkes then taught about child socialization, disadvantaged families and adult development at Iowa State University for 16 years, serving as head of the child development department for much of that time. While in Iowa, he received a faculty citation for distinguished service and outstanding teaching.

He was also involved in the creation of Project Head Start, a major program in President Johnson's War on Poverty in the mid-1960s. Hawkes traveled to remote communities to help organize the program that was devoted to giving young children a better start in school. Besides setting up programs to help poor children learn to read and write, Hawkes remembered teaching their parents to ask questions and work with local physicians to get help.

Hawkes joined UCD's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in 1966 as an associate dean, representing the social sciences and humanities within the college.

His arrival coincided with a growing appreciation among both scholars and the public that agriculture impacted the community, said Charles Hess, who was dean of the college for much of Hawkes' tenure as an administrator.

"Glenn Hawkes was a champion for the faculty that dealt with social aspects and impacts of agriculture upon people and their communities, " Hess said. "He was always reminding us that we needed to pay more attention to our ability to apply social theories to improving the lives of people."

Professor Hawkes also was legendary for his rapport with students as well as his warmth and collegiality with staff and faculty.

"He had a very warm heart and students would seek him out, " Hess said. "When students came to the dean's office, they knew to ask for him because Glenn was so receptive and understanding."

Hawkes later left the dean's office to go into full-time teaching and research in the department of applied behavioral sciences and chaired that department in the mid-1980s through a difficult transition. The department eventually was renamed the department of human and community development in 1992.

One of his colleagues, Professor Emerita Emmy Werner, remembers that Hawkes was great adviser to students who chose to focus on gerontology in the department's newly minted human development doctoral program.

After he retired in 1989, Hawkes became the campus administrator of the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program, sponsored by the U.S. Information Agency. Mid-career professionals from throughout the world came to UCD where Hawkes served as the campus' chief ambassador and host.

Hawkes was the author of four books and numerous other professional publications. He also loved to travel and spent time in 62 countries and all 50 states.

Hawkes was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Yvonne, in 1997. He is survived by their four children and spouses, Kristen Hawkes, William and Dorothy Hawkes, Gregory and Mary Hawkes, and Valon and Laura (Hawkes) Cross; four grandchildren, Thomas and Sara Hawkes and Aleta and Mackenzie Cross; and three great-grandchildren, Daniela and Shay Hawkes and Liam Stelly-Hawkes. He is also survived by three brothers, George, Reed and Grant and one sister, Marilou (Hawkes) Moser.

A memorial open house will be held from noon to 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the auditorium at University Retirement Community, 1515 Shasta Drive in Davis.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to International House, 10 College Park, Davis, where Hawkes was an active participant and served on the board of directors.
