SILVIA
Evelyn Silvia
Evelyn Silvia, 57, of Davis, died peacefully in her sleep early in the morning of Jan. 21, 2006, at Woodland Memorial Hospital, following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She spent her last day surrounded by friends and family.
A memorial service and reception will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Davis Community Church, 412 C St. Burial will be private.
She was born on Feb. 8, 1948, in Fall River, Mass., the daughter of Manuel Silvia Jr. and Evelyn Mary (Thompson) Silvia. She received a bachelor's degree in 1969 from Southeastern Massachusetts University (now University of Massachusetts, North Dartmouth) and a doctorate degree in mathematics in 1973 from Clark University.
In 1973, she joined the faculty at UC Davis, where she has spent her entire career as a professor of mathematics.
She was dedicated to excellence in teaching mathematics at all levels. In 2000, she received the Mathematics Association of America Sectional Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics, and in 2001, she was presented with the MAA National Teaching Award (Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics), the most prestigious honor the mathematics profession bestows for teaching and related activities.
She was a recipient of the UC Davis Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award in 1990. She had multiple grants related to teaching mathematics to students in grades K to 12, including a recent million-dollar National Science Foundation award enabling UC Davis students and K-12 math and science teachers to work together to conduct classroom-based inquiry research.
Her academic research contributions were broad-based. They encompassed work in mathematics education, curriculum development, and her theoretical work in complex analysis and geometric functions. Her writings included numerous materials to help students from grade school to graduate school understand mathematics, and to help teachers convey mathematics effectively.
She gave unselfishly of her time and expertise to her family, friends, students, the university and the mathematics community. She directed the master of arts in teaching program in mathematics at UC Davis for many years, was director of the Teaching Resources Center from 1989 to 1992, served as secretary of the UC Davis Academic Senate, and contributed to numerous other vital committees of the UC Davis and UC Systemwide Academic Senate. Although her collegial advice to others was to learn to say no, she rarely turned down requests for something she felt was important.
One of her passions was to help women succeed in academia. For many years, she coordinated an informal support group to which all UCD women faculty were invited, called the Faculty Women's Research Support Group. With contributions from many other women faculty, she authored a report titled “Collegial Advice for Assistant Professors: Hints for Success and Stress Reduction as an Assistant Professor, ” featured on the vice provost's Web site.
Some comments from female faculty upon hearing about her passing reflect the esteem with which she is held: “Her influence on faculty development extended far beyond her wildest dreams. Women of whom she probably never even heard used the wisdom she offered.”
Another said: “I am very sad to hear of Evelyn's death. Her presence at UCD mattered a lot to me. I always appreciated her frankness, her pragmatism, her dedication, and her fiery spirit. She was truly unique.”
She was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn M. Silvia, and her sister, Nancy Silvia.
She is survived by her husband, Doyle O. Cutler of Davis; her father, Manuel Silvia Jr., and brother, Howard T. Silvia, of Somerset, Mass.; brothers Dwight D. Silvia and Manuel Silvia, III, and sister Loretta A. (Silvia) Estrella, all of Fall River, Mass.; stepson, Daniel F. Cutler and his wife Martha, of Cazadero; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Landry and her children Colby and Drake, of Gold River; and 12 nephews and nieces and many grandnephews and nieces, including Amanda Estrella of Sacramento.
