Wen-Tze Hwang
Wen-Tze Hwang died on Feb. 18, 2000, at Sutter Davis Hospital from congestive heart failure. Born on March 6, 1914, in Taiwan to Mr. and Mrs. Hai Hwang, he was 86 years old.
Mr. Hwang attended elementary school in Taiwan. He went on to the Hida Agricultural and Engineering Vocational High School in Oida prefecture, Japan. Soon after, he spent four years at the School of Veterinary Medicine in Tokyo University in Japan and received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1937.
After his graduation from Tokyo University, he went back to Taiwan serving at various governmental agencies, which were related to animal health and husbandry. In 1957 he was appointed as the director of the Taiwan Provincial Animal Health Research Institute.
He served nine years under the capacity of director. During this period, he also served as the chief commissioner of the KMT party in Tamsui district. In 1966, he was further promoted to the position of chief of the Animal Husbandry Division of Taiwan Provincial Agricultural Bureau until his retirement in 1979.
During this period he also served as an adjunct associate professor for 13 years at the Taiwan National Chung Shing University and the Taiwan Provincial Ping Tung Agriculture College. After his retirement, he and his wife resided in Davis to be close to their children.
He is survived by his wife, Pai-Yeu; his two daughters, Barbara Shiow-Chyong Hwang of Davis, and Jiin H. Felgner and her husband Phillip Felgner of Rancho Santa Fe; his four sons, Victor C.Y. Hwang of Hamburg, Germany, Ralph B. Hwang of Davis, Wu-Yen Huang of Shelter Cove, and Chao-Yen Hwang of Davis; nine grandchildren, George Hwang of Fremont, Jessie Hwang of Mountain View, Calvin Hwang of San Diego, Jamie Hwang of Palo Alto, Jay Hwang of Davis, Peter and Hans Huang of Folsom, Jeffrey and Scott Felgner of Rancho Santa Fe; five brothers, Wen-Jung Hwang of Tokyo, Wen-Hui Hwang of Taipei, Wen-Chu Hwang of Taipei, Wen-Hwan Hwang of Taipei, and Wendell Hwang of Concord; three sisters, Kui Chen and Sher Lin of Taipei and Shu Cheng of Brighton, Colo.
Friends are invited to attend a funeral service to celebrate his life on Saturday, March 4, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St., in Davis. Burial will follow at the Davis Cemetery.
His family has requested the memorial contributions be made to either the Sutter Davis Hospital Foundation or the Tzu Chi Buddhist Compassion Relief Foundation. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
HYATT
Esther Margaret Hyatt
HYATT - At Vacaville, Cal., July 1, 1878 Esther Margaret, wife of Hon. T.H. Hyatt, daughter of the late Silas Walbridge, of Rochester, N.Y., and mother of Mrs. Geo. North, Mount Glenwood, Yolo county, Cal.
Under the appropriate head will be seen a notice of the death of Mrs. Esther Margaret, wife of Hon. T.B. Hyatt, at Vacaville. Deceased had been a sufferer from lingering paralysis for more than two year past. Her remains were brought to Winters on Tuesday last, and on Wednesday interred in the family burial ground at Mount Glenwood, in the foot hills near town, the summer residence of Mr. Geo. North and family of Marysville.
Francis E. Franklin
Francis Eugene Franklin, a longtime Davis resident, died Dec. 24, 2000, at the age of 85. He was born in Modesto on July 10, 1915, and lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and Chico before moving to Davis in 1962.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1937 and during his naval career, which lasted until 1958, he served as a radio and electronics technician, retiring as chief petty officer after teaching electronics at Treasure Island, San Francisco, for many years.
During World War II, he served as radio operator to the admiral of the 8th Amphibious Force in the Mediterranean Sea aboard the naval flag ship USS Biscayne. As such, he participated in the invasions of Salerno, Sicily and Anzio and later the invasion of southern France.
During the Korean War, he was stationed in Japan as an electronics instructor.
Following his retirement from the Navy he joined the Federal Aviation Agency, serving as radar engineer in charge, working at both Mather and McClellan Air Force bases, retiring again in 1971 from government service.
During his many years in Davis, Franklin was involved in a variety of activities. He served as Master of Athens Lodge F&AM, president of the Yolo County Shrine Club and as a member of the Keystone Kops of the Ben Ali Temple.
For more than 60 years, Franklin held an amateur radio license and had contacts all over the world, operating under the call sign W6UDF.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Mildred; two sons, William Franklin and his wife Linda of Middletown, and Jerrold Franklin and his wife Wendy of Sacramento; a daughter, Carol Franklin White of Sacramento; eight grandchildren, Robert Franklin and his wife Gail, Joan Franklin Fatu, Paul Franklin, Vicki Franklin Grant and her husband David, Shannon Franklin and his wife Laura, Darla Fischer Brewer and her husband Steve, Travis Franklin and Aaron Franklin; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be at the Chico Cemetery under the direction of the Davis Funeral Chapel. Remembrances may be made to Shriners Children's Hospital in Sacramento.
FRANSCIONI
Gene F. Franscioni
Gene F. Franscioni died recently at the Mabel Northside Convalescent Hospital on Hollister. He was 89.
Born March 13, 1915, in Watsonville, he lived in Hollister for three years and had previously lived in Davis from 1953 to 1975.
He was the former manager and owner of Medlock Crop Dusters in Davis. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II as a lieutenant colonel with the 101st Airborne as a pilot. He participated in the D-Day invasion of Europe, and while in the service he received the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Franscioni was an avid golfer and hunter.
He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Gene Franscioni.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carol Franscioni of Hollister; daughter, Robin Meggait of Armstrong, British Columbia; sister, Denise Franklin of Tucson, Ariz.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St. in Salinas.
A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Struve and Laporte Chapel.
Memorials may be sent to the donor's favorite charity.

FRANTI
Charles E. Franti
Charles E. Franti, a professor emeritus at UC Davis, died suddenly at his Davis home on May 26, 2003, of cardiac arrest. He was 70.
He was born April 29, 1933, to John and Ida Franti in Ewen, Mich. After graduating from high school, he earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1955.
His teaching career began at Suomi College in Hancock, Mich., where he taught mathematics, biology and physical education and also coached the men's basketball team. In addition, he taught mathematics at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Mich. He met Carole Joan Wisti, a student at Suomi College, and they marriage on Aug. 25, 1956.
Franti continued his education during summer breaks, completing master's degrees at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University.
He received his doctorate in biostatistics from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health in 1967. He then joined the faculty of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, in the department of epidemiology and preventative medicine, continuing his long career as a teacher, researcher and author. Before retiring in 1997, he published more than 200 papers and wrote two books.
Nevertheless, he considered his involvement, along with a group of other dedicated baseball enthusiasts, in the construction of the UC Davis baseball field to be his greatest contribution to the university.
Franti's family described him as a devoted husband and father, sports enthusiast, woodsman and accomplished decoy carver. He enjoyed entering carving competitions and working in the woods on his property in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. He also spent one summer volunteering as a docent/handyman at Alaska's Independence State Park.
He is survived by his wife Carole Franti of Davis; five children, Rebecca of West Sacramento, Sara of League City, Texas, Dan of Bozeman, Mont., Michael of San Francisco and Matthew of Woodland; daughter-in-law Tara Franti-Rye; close family friends Lori Mathis, Bill Goss and Stephanie Sanders; two grandsons, Cappy Charles and Ade; five brothers, Dave of Ewen, George of Rhinelander, Wis., Bill of Jesup, Iowa, Bob of Bruce Crossing, Mich., and Dick of Ontonagon, Mich.; four sisters, Nancy Crocker of L'Anse, Mich., Alice Leno of Ewen, Joyce Lehto of Ishpeming, Mich., and Sarah Smedstad of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and 26 nieces and nephews.
He was a member of Lutheran Church of the Incarnation in Davis. Friends and colleagues are invited to attend a memorial service there to celebrate his life Saturday at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to Lutheran Church of the Incarnation, the Health Services Library at UC Davis or a favorite charity.
FRANTZ
Eddie Frantz
Eddie Frantz, 80, died on Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, in Woodland. Born on May 25, 1922, in Durham, Kan., Mr. Frantz moved to Woodland in 1956.
Mr. Frantz worked for Pacific Gas & Electric in Davis for 28 years and was a member of the Woodland First Church of the Nazarene for 47 years where he served as the music and choir director for much of that time.
Mr. Frantz is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lucille; daughter, Carolyn Irwin of Rancho Cucamonga; and son, Don Frantz of Arbuckle. He is also survived by three grandsons, Bryan Block of Glendora, Justin Frantz of San Diego, and Aaron Frantz of Arbuckle; four great-grandchildren, Megan and Douglas Grapes, and Nicole and Taylor Block.
Additionally, Mr. Frantz is survived by two sisters, Josephine of Canton, Kan., and Mary Unruh of Newton, Kan., as well as by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Viewing is scheduled at McNary's Funeral Chapel in Woodland from 6 to 8 p.m., today, Thursday. A service celebrating his life will be held at the Woodland First Church of the Nazarene at 10 a.m., Friday. Interment will be at Monument Hill Cemetery following the service.
FRASER
Elisabeth Frances Fraser
Elisabeth Frances Fraser died in Davis on Oct. 17, 2005. She was 92.
At her request, no services will be held.
She was raised in Edison, Alberta, Canada, where she attended local schools until moving to New York City in 1946 to marry Donald Fraser. In 1948, she moved to Sacramento and, in 1999, she moved to Yolo County.
She loved gardening and was a member of the Sacramento Garden Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Elaine Tillman and her husband Phil of Davis; grandchildren, Ian Tillman and his wife Chelsa of Davis, and Jean Tillman and her husband Josh Brooks of Huntington Beach; great-grandchildren, Max Fraser Tillman of Davis and Joey Brooks of Huntington Beach; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Fraser; brothers, Waldo and Douglas Seamen; and a sister, Elaine King.
The family requests that any memorial contributions be made to Yolo Hospice. Evergreen Funeral Service of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
FRAZIER
Elna (Hudgens) Kelly Frazier
Elna Kelly Frazier, formerly of Winters, passed away on June 12, 2004, at Winsor Convalescent Hospital in Vacaville. She was born July 29, 1918, in Alabama.
As a military wife, Elna lived in many places, finally settling in Vacaville with her family. She and her husband purchased Markley Cove Resort at Lake Berryessa in 1964 and she was a familiar face behind the county for many years.
After moving to Winters, Elna became well known around town as she took her brisk daily walks, rain or shine. Elna's favorite activity was bridge. Her lovely face hid a very competitive spirit and she would play at every opportunity. Elna was an active member of Pioneer Presbyterian Church.
Elna is survived by her beloved children and grandchildren: son and daughter-in-law John and Linda Frazier; daughter Leigh Sutherland and granddaughter Quincey Sutherland, all of Winters; granddaughter Betsy Barbosa, of Vacaville and grandson Chad Frazier, of Girdwood, Alaska.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Frazier and her daughter Janenne Pierce.
An informal gathering will be held to honor her life on Sunday, June 27, from 3-5 p.m. at 216 Toyon Lane, in Winters. Friends and loved ones are welcome to attend.
