Victor Vincent Martin, Jr
Victor Vincent Martin Jr. died at the Cottonwood HealthCare Center on Sunday, April 25, 2004 at age 72.
Mr. Martin was born June 16, 1931 in San Bernardino and was a Yolo County resident for five months.
Survivors include Mr. Martin's brothers, Jack and Gordon Martin. His cremains will be placed in the Indigent Monument.
Services: No services are scheduled. Arrangements are under the direction of North Sacramento Funeral Home.
SCHIEFFER
Elizabeth Ida Schieffer
Elizabeth Ida Schieffer died at Kaiser Permanente in Sacramento Monday, March 17, 2003, at age 90.
Born April 1, 1912, in Beach, N.D., Mrs. Schieffer had been a Yolo County resident for 21 years.
Survivors include her sons, Norbert Schieffer of Concord, William Schieffer and wife Loretta of Oxnard; daughters, Ann Hanson and husband Ferdy of Woodland, Mary Broderick and husband Fred of Filer, Idaho, and Shirley Moss of Antioch; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Sylvester C. Schieffer; brothers, Frank, John, Ray and Andy Nix; and sister, Mary Shinebarger.
The family requests memorials be directed to Guide Dogs for the Blind; or the charity of donor's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of McNary's Chapel of Woodland.
Services: A funeral service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Woodland. Burial will be held privately at St. Joseph's Cemetery, San Pablo.
SCHILLING
Jacqueline McCormick Schilling
Jacqueline McCormick Schilling, a resident of Davis since 1963, died on July 2, 2005, at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. She was 80.
The family invites her friends to a gathering celebrating her life at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, at her home in Davis.
Born July 8, 1924, in St. Albans, Vt., to Thomas Allen and Ruby Hartmann McCormick, she graduated from Bellows Free Academy and the University of Vermont.
She was the widow of Stanley Schilling, a Yolo County physician who died in 1984. The couple met as students while both were attending UVM. They were marriage in St. Albans in 1949.
Before settling in Davis, she and her family lived in Madison, Wis.; Lihue, Hawaii; Weimar and San Francisco.
She and her husband also lived in the Capay Valley. She returned to Davis upon his death.
Her lifelong passions were cooking and knitting. She was well known for her piroshki, pomegranate jelly, curry powder pickles and Christmas rosettes. She frequently hosted knitting parties at her home and knitted with friends at the Davis Senior Center.
She also was active in the Yolo County Medical Society Auxiliary, often taking part in the auxiliary's puppet shows at elementary schools, teaching proper nutrition.
She volunteered for many years as a teacher's aide at Fairfield and Willett elementary schools.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers Fuller S. and Thomas A. McCormick.
She is survived by her sons Reuben, Jonathan and Tyler, daughter-in-law Joyce Akiyoshi Schilling and grandchildren Sally and Jack Schilling, all of the Davis area; sister Jane Sumner of Williston, Vt.; sister-in-law Jackie Beanland McCormick of Geneva, N.Y., and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Short-Term Emergency Aid Committee, P. O. Box 1047, Davis, CA 95617.
SCHIMMEL
Arie Schimmel
Arie Schimmel died on April 28, 2003, at the Sacramento home of his daughter, Ardys Schimmel, with his wife of 63 years and other family members at his bedside. He was 88 years old. The cause of his death was congestive heart failure.
Born on Aug. 20, 1914, on a farm southeast of Sioux Center, Iowa, he was the son of Albert and Dena (Vermeer) Schimmel. He graduated from rural school in 1928 and began farming with his father. In 1933 he moved with his parents to a farm two miles southeast of Sioux Center, where he lived for the next 43 years.
On June 8, 1939, he marriage Magdalene Scheffer in the Carmel Reformed Church.
The couple moved to a home on acreage on his parent's farm near Sioux Center. In 1951 his family exchanged homes with his parents and he and his wife lived there until 1976, when they moved to Sioux Center. In 1993 they moved to Davis, to be near family. They resided here until March 2003, when they moved to The Atrium retirement home in Carmichael.
After marrying, Arie owned and operated corn shellers and farmed with his father. He also operated a threshing machine for Wandscheer Brothers for a number of years. In 1944, he sold his corn shellers, expanded his farming operation, and started milking, developing a purebred Aryshire dairy herd. After selling his herd in 1959, he expanded his cattle and hog operation. He retired from daily farming when he moved to Sioux Center.
During his years of farming, he was active in the Farm Bureau. On two different occasions, his family hosted International Farm Youth exchange students: the first, Kees Perdock from the Netherlands, spent a year with the Schimmel family in 1954 and 1955; the second, Gopal Krishna, spent the summer of 1958.
Arie became a 4-H club leader in 1950. He was a member of the Sioux County Youth Fair board and was its president during its years of expansion and a move to a new site. From 1958 to 1983, he was a salesman for DeKalb seed corn.
In 1974 he was appointed to the Sioux County Board of Supervisors, filling a vacancy. He was elected in successive elections until retiring in 1992, serving as board chairman for many years.
In his free time he played and managed for softball teams, and he liked to hunt and fish. An active sports fan, he followed the Sioux Center High School and Northwestern College athletic teams. After moving to California, he became an avid San Francisco Giants and 49ers fan, as well as a Sacramento Kings supporter. He enjoyed family gatherings, and he was exceedingly fond of his grandchildren.
An active member of the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center until 1990, he and his wife then helped organize Sioux Center's New Life Reformed Church. In Davis, he joined the Davis Community Church. At his death, his membership was being transferred to Christ Community Church in Carmichael.
He is survived by his wife and his four children, Allan of Philadelphia, Pa.; Leon of Davis; Ardys of Sacramento; and Nancy of Salem, Ore. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Harriet W. Vermeer.
In accordance with his wishes, his body was cremated upon his death.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Community Church on Saturday, June 14, at 10:30 a.m. The family requests that contributions, in lieu of flowers, be made in his name to the New Life Reformed Church in Sioux Center.
MARTIN-NICKEL
Arleen Ruth Martin-Nickel
Arleen Ruth Martin-Nickel passed away on Jan. 23, 2006. She was born in Hollywood on Feb. 27, 1942 to Everett and Ruth Winship. Arleen graduated from Gardena High School in Gardena and enjoyed taking classes at Woodland Community College. Arleen resided in Woodland for 37 years.
Arleen's greatest pride was her four children. She was an avid seamstress and liked to crochet. She was a homemaker for 17 years and was active in PTA, room parent, Girl Scout troop leader, girls softball, Cub Scouts and very involved in Woodland Little League during her sons' participation. Arleen also loved traveling and camping, especially enjoying the ocean.
Arleen was employed by Contadina and the Woodland School District for 10 years.
She is survived by her loving husband of 13 years, William "Bill" Nickel. She will be deeply missed by her children, Sherri Martin-Gallagher and her husband Matthew, Brian Martin, Christian Martin, Kenneth Martin, Tina Nickel-Kelly and her husband Joe and Regina Nickel-Ligons and her husband Larry. She has 15 wonderful grandchildren and five delightful great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by two brothers, David and James Winship and many nieces and nephews.
Her greatest gift was her ability to care for her family and friends.
A celebration of her life will be held Monday, Jan. 30 at 10 a.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ, 432 Cleveland St., Woodland with Pastor William Schroeder officiating. Interment will be at Monument Hill Memorial Park.
The family requests donations made in Arleen's name to UC Davis Cancer Research Center, 4501 X St., Suite 3016, Sacramento, 95817.

MARTINDALE
Peggy Helen Martindale
Peggy Helen Martindale died Sept. 28, 2001 at Sierra Convalescent Hospital in Davis. Born on Feb. 6, 1924, in Ogden, Utah, she was 77 years old.
She grew up in Ogden and loved the rodeo. She was a housewife, a resident of Yolo County for 24 years and lived at Sierra for more than 20 years. She will be missed.
She is survived by her sisters, Pat Welker of Amboy, Wash., and Tara Hurley of Vancouver, Wash.; her brother, Tom Tobias of Salt Lake City; and her sister-in-law, Kathryn Tobias of Ogden. She was preceded in death by her brother, William Tobias.
North Sacramento Funeral Home took care of the arrangements. She will be cremated and the ashes will be placed in the Ogden City Cemetery with her parents.
MARTINEZ
Alice "Adelicia" Martinez
A Mass of Christian Burial for Alice "Adelicia" Martinez, 90, a Solano County resident since 1919, was held at 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 24, in St. Anthony Catholic Church in Winters. The Rev. Joseph Ternullo of the church officiated. Burial followed at the Winters Cemetery.
Born Dec. 12, 1908, in Marchal de Lubrin, Almeria, Spain, Mrs. Martinez died Jan. 20, 2000, in Vacaville.
She had worked for Vacaville's Basic Vegetable Products Co. for more than 20 years and had a life membership in the Vacaville Senior Citizens Club. She also was a member of the Spanish Club. She was a rancher and homemaker and enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, crocheting and bingo.
Mrs. Martinez is survived by her daughters, Ann Gertz and Irene George, both of Winters; son Frank Jr. of Vacaville; grandchildren, Mistee Dennis of Citrus Heights, Deanna Allen and E. J. Martinez, both of Vacaville, Donna LaViolette of Gridley and Denise Bolla, Christ Gertz, Edward and Tom George, all of Winters; sister, Frances Garcia of Dixon; brother, Chris Martinez Jr. of Winters; numerous nieces and nephews, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 23, with a vigil held at 7 p.m. in McCune Garden Chapel in Vacaville.
