RANSTROM

Jeffrey Karl Ranstrom

Jeffrey Karl Ranstrom of Davis died Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. He was 45.

A celebration of his life will be held the afternoon of Aug. 20 at Lutheran Church of the Incarnation in Davis.

Ranstrom was born Aug. 20, 1960, in Ogden, Utah, the third son of Don and Roberta Ranstrom. He attended Davis Senior High School and graduated from UC Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in computer science. Artificial intelligence was his special interest.

In his junior and senior years at Cal, Ranstrom worked on the INGRESS project that revolutionized relational databases. He continued that work after graduation at Altos Computer Systems, and then was an early, key employee at Sybase. There he helped architect Sybase's first highly successful product. This was later sold to Microsoft; it is now known as “SQL Server.” In recent years, Ranstrom worked as a consultant for several small software companies.

In 1983, he marriage Julie Chen. They had one child, Eleanor, born in 1985. After an amicable divorce, Jeff and Julie maintained joint custody of Eleanor, who is now a Mills College student on extended study in New Zealand.

Ranstrom was an avid cyclist and windsurfer, a supporter of the San Francisco Symphony and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and an informed and articulate champion of progressive political causes and candidates.

In November 2003, he was diagnosed with a malignant and very aggressive brain tumor. He carefully researched the available treatment protocols and clinical trials, and entered a dendritic cell vaccine clinical trial at Cedars-Sinai Maxine Dunitz Cancer Center in Los Angeles.

Ranstrom's heroic struggle with brain cancer - including five craniotomies and three courses of radiation - was marked by several astounding rallies that offered hope for full recovery, only to be met by new setbacks. Through it all, he maintained his warmth and humor, positive outlook and delight in good friends, music, art and organic food.

Two years after his diagnosis, Ranstrom moved from his hilltop home in Berkeley to his parents' residence in Davis. There he was surrounded by family and friends until hospitalization at the UCD Med Center.

In addition to his daughter Eleanor, Ranstrom is survived by his parents, Don and Roberta Ranstrom of Davis; three brothers, Jon of Moraga, Tim of Davis and Greg of Bend, Ore.; and two sisters, Julie of Citrus Heights and Laurie of Davis. He had seven nieces and nephews.

Family members expressed gratitude for many expressions of support and sympathy as well as the skillful and loving care that Ranstrom received at Cedars-Sinai and at UCD Med Center. They urge that his commitment to progressive causes and finding a cure for brain cancer be carried forward by all those who remember him.

MAHANEY

Jack LeRoy Mahaney (1st of 2 obits.)

In Loving Memory of Jack LeRoy Mahaney

Jack left this world suddenly on Jan. 8, 2005 during what was expected to be routine cardiac bypass surgery. Otherwise healthy and active, we only have consolation now that Jack outwitted us one more time. Always a leader, never a follower, his family, friends and community will miss him forever. He was a great role model, was always resourceful and sensitive with a healthy sense of humor.

Born in Webb City, Mo. Nov. 27, 1924, Jack moved to Tulsa, Okla. in 1926 with his mother, Christine Mahaney. In January of 1943 while only a senior in high school, he volunteered into the U.S. Navy and served in the North and South Pacific. After two years, he was released into inactive duty at the end of W.W. II. Jack finished high school at night while also attending National Trade School acquiring an Automotive Technician Certificate.

In September 1949 Jack attended Tulsa University as a Petroleum Engineering student and transferred to Oklahoma State University in 1950. His education was interrupted again in July of 1950 when recalled to active Naval duty for the Korean War. Jack received a final Naval Discharge at the end of the Korean War in October 1951.

"By this time, " Jack wrote "I gave up finishing college." In January of 1952, he began a 35-year career with Texaco Oil Company in Oklahoma. He was transferred to California and worked in the oil fields. In 1957, he tackled education yet again, but through correspondence school and received a Certificate in Petroleum Engineering Technology.

His career with Texaco took him and his family throughout California and Alaska. In 1968 he was promoted to a foreman on a Texaco offshore oil platform. After two years, he returned to the lower 48 states settling in Woodland as the foreman of Texaco's Northern Drilling and Production Operations. Jack finished his career with Texaco as Superintendent of Production of the Los Angeles Basin and retired in January of 1986. During this period he had a wonderful son and daughter from his first marriage to Helen P. Phalen Mahaney.

On Sept. 11, 1987, he marriage Glenice Dean Fumasi of Williams and became an important citizen of that community. Jack organized the local blood drive for BloodSource; was the volunteer coordinator for Caltrans' Adopt-a-Highway Program on Highway 20 by the Williams Senior Citizens; helped maintain the local Catholic church; helped his friend Vern Ornbaun harvest his fields; and he was always available to do home repairs for those not able. He was presented the Williams Senior Citizen of the Year award in 1997 by the Rotary Club, and the Colusa Parlor No. 194 Native Daughters of Golden West Man of the Year award in 2000 for his contributions to the community. Not one for being idle, he loved tinkering with his old, red 16-foot Glasspar boat, fishing in the Sacramento River with his buddy Mr. Frank Shields and taking his beloved dog Mac for runs in the nearby fields.

Jack was very proud of his family. He is sorely missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Glenice; his ex-wife, Helen "Pat" Mahaney; children, Patrick Mahaney and Ann Mahaney Meshot; stepchildren, Marsh Peart, Dean Fumasi, Belinda Southworth, and Betty Welch; grandchildren, Allison and Lauren Mahaney; Isabel and Gillian Meshot; Theron, Briley and Fallon Fumasi; Jed, Jake and Monique Welch; Brandi Stegmann; Laura Newson; Debra Peart Vechler; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Williams Community Center in care of Ron Simmons, Williams, 95897.
