HENNER-WOLSKI
Irena Anna Henner-Wolski
Dr. Irena Anna Henner-Wolski, a Holocaust survivor known by many as "Babcia, " or "grandmother" in Polish, died peacefully at her Davis home Sept. 9, 2003. She was 82.
Born Aug. 18, 1921, in Lvov, Poland, she was the youngest child of Franciszka and Wladislaw Gelerter. She was a medical student when she was forced by the German occupation of Poland to go underground, after most of her family and many of her friends vanished. She was helped by friends and strangers alike as she hid in numerous cities and the high mountains with her older sister and, later, with her husband and a newborn baby.
In 1944 she survived the Warsaw uprising when citizens fought the Germans for 63 days before being defeated. Following the uprising, much of the remaining population was deported or killed. Irena, her husband and their 5-month-old daughter were removed by the Red Cross, however, joining the last survivors allowed to leave Warsaw before the German army carried out a systematic destruction of the city.
After the war, Irena resumed her medical education at the University of Krakow. She became a surgeon, then an almost entirely male field.
In 1957 she and her daughter managed to leave communist Poland. They settled in Israel, where Irena became the first female surgeon in the city of Haifa. An excellent diagnostician and superb surgeon, she helped many people there during her 40-year career and became a highly respected and well-known member of the community, her daughter said.
Irena was a frequent visitor to Davis. During her retirement, in 1997, she moved here, joining her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to create a four-generation family and becoming a permanent resident of the United States.
She attended English classes, participated in a special amateur genealogist group writing memoirs and was a regular bridge player at the Senior Center. She enjoyed water aerobics, travel, theater, music, old movies and books -- which she could read in any of seven languages.
She loved walking or riding her scooter on the greenbelts of North Davis and visiting the Davis Community Library. A music lover, she attended many concerts and never missed a performance of the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra.
For many years Irena battled rheumatoid arthritis, yet she continued her active life even as joint pain and stiffness decreased her ability to function independently. She died three weeks after her 82nd birthday, living long enough to see the birth of her youngest great-grandchild, Eliana.
Her family said she will be remembered as a strong, beautiful and elegant woman and a leader, a presence to be felt and admired, and for all she accomplished in helping the world in spite of the trauma she suffered.
She is survived by her daughter Jolanta Moore of Davis; her granddaughter Karen Levy, her husband Mark Levy and their twin children Emma and Bailey Levy of Davis; her grandson Raphael Moore, his wife Netania Moore and their daughter Eliana of Davis; her only surviving cousin and two nephews in Israel; as well as by many friends in Davis and in Israel.
A funeral service was conducted in the Jewish section of the Davis Cemetery by Rabbi Joseph Melamed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation in honor of the deceased be made to the Hillel Capital Project and mailed care of Raphael Moore, Phoenix House, 413 F St., Davis CA 95616.
