NELSON

Maurine 'Fay' Nelson

Maurine Morse 'Fay' Nelson died on Jan. 24, 2000. Born on Dec. 28, 1905, in St. Joseph, Mo., she was 94.

Fay, the daughter of a violin teacher, grew up in Kansas City and briefly studied at the Kansas City Art Institute in the 1920s. She attended Northwestern University, where she received her bachelor's degree in speech in 1927.

In 1935, while attending evening classes at the Chicago Art Institute, she met Richard L. Nelson. In addition to the visual arts, the two shared a love for music and played regularly with local orchestras. They were marriage in 1937.

In 1939, Richard left his position with the city of Chicago, and he and Fay traveled around the U.S., painting and exploring the art field. They moved to Long Beach. In 1942, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During his service, Fay moved around the country with their beloved dog, Flash, visiting relatives, directing plays and tutoring in speech.

In 1946, Fay and Richard studied art at Mills College and UC Berkeley. Fay studied painting with Worth Ryder, Reginald Marsh and Eugen Neuhaus. In 1948, both Nelsons received their master's degrees in art from UC Berkeley.

In 1952, the Nelsons came to Davis. Richard had been hired at UC Davis to start a new department of philosophy and fine arts. They first lived on Campus Way and moved to Russell Boulevard around 1963.

In the 1950s, Fay exhibited frequently in the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento region and Pullman, Wash. Her 'Red Cows, ' painted in that period, appeared in the multi-gallery exhibition, ``Sacramento Valley Landscapes, ' (catalog edited by Price Amerson), and was donated to the Davis Senior Center, where it now hangs.

After Richard was named chairman of the department of art at UCD, Fay became very active in the arts at the university as well as in the Davis community. Richard died in 1972 but Fay continued to paint until the late 1970s.

Davisites will remember her playing the piano to accompany the Picnic Day and campus silent films, and for performances at The Palms Theater. Also an accomplished cellist, she performed regularly with the Davis Community Orchestra.

In 1987, the Nelson Gallery had an exhibition of Fay's paintings, drawings and sketches. This exhibition, covering the work of many years, was a testimonial to the artist's long contribution to the cultural life of this region.

Fay was a remarkably gifted person, and her presence has made the community of Davis richer. She will be remembered fondly by her friends and caregivers. Most particularly, she will be missed by her nurse and surrogate daughter, Delonda Jones, who has cared for her through Alzheimer's disease.

Memorial donations may be made to the Nelson Gallery, UCD, or to the Alzheimer's Association.
