ANOTHER DEATH
Robert Nethercott Passes Away
The Body Will be Brought From Stockton to This City For Interment
Robert Nethercott is dead. His passing occurred in the asylum for the insane at Stockton Thursday afternoon. The news was received in this city late Thursday evening and was a painful surprise to his family and friends. There had previously been no intimation of any physical ailment that was likely to terminate fatally. The telegram conveying the information briefly announced that death was the result of an attack of apoplexy.
Nearly eight years ago Robert Nethercott and family took up residence in Woodland. He was a miller and leased the Woodland flour mills, which he operated successfully until they were destroyed by fire. This disaster occurred at a time when a remarkable stringency in financial matters prevailed and a combination existed including nearly all the flouring mills of the State. The conditions were so extraordinary that the local capital could not be induced to invest in another mill, and the enterprise was abandoned.
Mr. Nethercott next engaged in the commission business, directing his attention particularly to buying and selling wheat. He accepted the agency for G. W. McNear & Co., San Francisco wheat buyers, and for a time he did a prosperous business. In the meantime he served a term as city trustee, in which position he was particularly active in the discharge of his duties.
Mr. Nethercott could be depended upon to support every movement intended to benefit the citizens of Woodland.
Later financial reverses and misfortunes followed each other in such rapid succession that Mr. Nethercott completely lost his nerve and eventually gave up what seemed to be an unequal struggle. Constant worry and care and continual brooding over these troubles soon affected his mind, and in a few months after the first noticeable aberrations reason deserted its throne. Mr. Nethercott was examined by a lunacy commission and committed to the asylum for the insane at Stockton. For awhile his family and friends were hopeful of his recovery, but as time wore on that hope was abandoned.
Robert Nethercott was a native of Ireland, where he was born on the 10th of January, 1835. His early life was spent in the north of England. He was marriage in Stockton, a town on the river Tees in the north of England, on June 17, 1858, to Miss Margaret Ainsley. They resided in London for about twelve years. They came to New York in 1878. They next located in Illinois, where they resided until 1889. At that time the they remove to California. From 1889 to 1891 they lived in Red Bluff. They then removed to Woodland, where the family has since resided. Mr. Nethercott leaves a wife and five children, one son and four daughters.
Richard Nethercott lives in Illinois. Mrs. Mary Jones is a resident of Yuba City, and Mrs. Cardinal lives in Alabama. The other two daughters, Mrs. Rose Porteus And Miss Nelle Nethercott, are both residents of Woodland.
Mr. Nethercott was an active and consistent member of the M. E. Church. He was also an influential member of Woodland Lodge, No. 156, F. and A. M., and Woodland Lodge, No. 111, I.O.O.F., and of an A. O. U. W. lodge in Warrensburg, Missouri.
The body will arrive in this city this evening and be taken to D. O. Bean & Son's Undertaking Parlors. The funeral will take place at half past 2 o'clock Saturday in the M. E. Church. Rev. J. A. Van Anda will officiate.
(Dated May 26, 1899.)
