Elizabeth L. Thompson
Elizabeth L. Thompson of Reedley died on May 28, 2004. She was 62.
She was the daughter of Frank B. Lindsay, former state secretary of education, and Wanda J. Lindsay. She grew up in Davis, graduating from Davis High School in 1958.
She is survived by her husband, William Thompson of Reedley.
GATES
John William Gates
John William Gates died Friday Feb. 15, 2002, in a Concord hospital at the age of 77 after a long illness.
Mr. Gates was born on Aug. 6, 1924 in Arizona and had lived in Woodland for five years in the late 1980s. He spent more than the last 25 years living in the Vallejo/Benicia area.
He was a retired hospital corpsman for the United States Navy for more than 20 years, retiring in 1962. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War.
While in Woodland, he was a member as well as past president and vice president of the Sylvan Sam RV Club of Woodland.
Mr. Gates is survived by his wife Barbara Gates of Benicia; daughters Joan Cardinale of San Jose and Janet Cary of North Pole, Alaska; son, John M. Gates of Santa Clara; stepdaughter Jeanette Gates of Benicia; grandchildren Josette Souza, Jennifer Laugharn, Gena Cardinale, Daniel Cary and Jammie Morgan; great grandchildren, Mitchell Laugharn and Brandon Souza.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel with Deacon John Flanigan of St. Dominic's Church officiating.
His ashes will be scattered at sea in the Carquinez Straits.
GRIFFIN
Bessie H. Griffin
Funeral services held on Monday for Bessie H. Griffin
Funeral services were held Monday morning, Oct. 15, 1990 at Pioneer Presbyterian Church for Mrs. Bessie H. Griffin, 84. Pallbearers were William A. Chapman, Robert L. Button Jr., James D. Jarrett, Louis W. Ichtertz Jr., G. William Gray and George W. Griffin. Interment followed in the Winters Cemetery. Reverend Keith Knauf officiated at the services; the organist was Doris Gray. Also taking part in the services were members of Yosolano Chapter #218 Order of the Eastern Star of Winters. Smith's Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Griffin was born May 12, 1906, in Madison, California; she died in Woodland, Wednesday, Oct. 10. She was a homemaker and lived on the Griffin Ranch near Winters for the past 63 years. She was a member of the Pioneer Presbyterian Church of Winters, a member for over 50 years and a Past Matron two times in Yosolano Chapter 218 Order of the Eastern Star of Winters, a member of Menzalch Temple #16 Daughters of the Nile in Sacramento, and a longtime member of the Yolo County Farm Bureau.
Mrs. Griffin is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John H. and Shirlee Griffin of Winters, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George M. Griffin, who died in Woodland in 1961.
The family prefers that memorials in her memory be made to the scholarship fund of Winters Rotary Club or to the donor's favorite charity.
STOUT
Vera (Redman) Stout
Vera (Redman) Stout died in Sutter Davis Hospital, Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at age 89.
Born Sept. 13, 1912, in Fresno, Mrs. Stout had been a Yolo County resident for 20 years. She was also a resident at Mesa, Ariz. for 18 years. According to her family members, "she was a homemaker, and enjoyed the role of a mother."
Mrs. Stout is survived by her husband of 67 years, Earl Stout of Davis; children, Steve Stout, also of Davis, Priscilla Lloyd of Arkansas, and Brian Stout of Virginia.
She is also survived by her sister, Fern Pearson of Fresno; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A private service was held Sunday, Feb. 3.
STOVALL
John Whitney Stovall
John Whitney Stovall died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at Sutter Davis Hospital in Davis. He was 40.
Stovall was born on Jan. 5, 1965, in Sacramento and was raised in Davis, where he graduated from high school. Stovall worked for more than 20 years as a mechanic, most recently for Delta Marine as a boat mechanic. Family members said Stovall loved anything to do with boats and fishing and spent as much time as possible on the water, especially in the San Francisco Bay. He also enjoyed camping and traveling, and last year fulfilled a longtime dream when he and his wife, Lisa, traveled to Alaska.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bob Stovall, and father-in-law Jack Pugh.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa Blackford-Stovall of Sacramento; his mother, Suzanne Stovall of Davis; his sister, Karen Berg and her husband, Steve, of Davis; his mother-in-law, Anita Pugh of Sacramento; his uncle, Jack Toolan and his wife, Pat, of the Los Angeles area; his aunts (Sisters of Mercy) Str. Mary-Louise, Str. Gloria and Str. Pat, all of Burlingame; Stovall is further survived by his nieces and nephews, Allison Berg of Davis, and Terri, Jack, Ian and Sean Criederman, all of Torrence, and his best friends Rick and Pamela Mood of Reno, Nev.
Friends are invited to attend a graveside funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2 at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road, Davis. Remembrances may be made in Stovall's name to the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
STOWELL
Eva Mae Stowell
Eva Mae Stowell died peacefully in her El Macero home on Dec. 16, 2005, after a prolonged illness from stroke and Alzheimer's disease. Born on Jan. 23, 1922, she was 83 years old.
A celebration of her life will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wiscombe's Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St. in downtown Davis.
She was born in Roy, N.M., and lived in Tipton, Mo. She received her bachelor's degree in home economics from MacMurray College in 1944 and interned at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. At MacMurray College, she was elected president of her sophomore class and achieved honor status.
She marriage her husband, Dr. Robert E. Stowell, in 1945 and enjoyed traveling to many foreign countries. Upon moving to El Macero in 1967, she was active in the Yolo County Women's Medical Auxiliary, and was elected president in 1974-75.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Lee Phelps and Maxine Southerland.
She is survived by her husband; daughter, Susan of Davis; son, Rob and his wife Jean of Tahoe City; grandchildren, Dave Tambor of Folsom, and Ken and Lauren Martin of Roseville; and great-grandchildren, Christian and Catherine Martin of Roseville.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to any educational institution or charity of the donor's choice. The endowed Eva Mae Stowell Student Scholarship Fund has been established at MacMurray College.
STRAND
Lester A. Strand
Lester A. Strand, 84, died just after dawn on Jan. 10, 2000. He was an 18-year survivor of cancer who loved life but did not fear death. He was born March 1, 1915, in his family's home on a farm north of Starkweather, N.D.
Thanks to the support of the Hospice Program of St. Luke's Hospital, and the love of his family and friends, he was able to die in his own home.
He marriage Margaret Ann Hite on June 14, 1938, and after a few years of travel, they settled with their family in Minnesota.
He was an independent logger, owned a lumberyard, and worked as a maintenance carpenter. Since 1945, the Strands called Beaver Bay, Minn., their home. Since 1983, they considered Black Canyon City, Ariz., their winter home.
He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Louisa Bridge.
Les is survived by his wife, five children and their spouses, 17 grandchildren and seven spouses, and seven great-grandchildren. Among his survivors are Davis residents Janice and Adam Bridge and their children Tom, Erik and Margaret.
A family gathering to celebrate the joy of his life and the pain of his parting was held Wednesday and Thursday in Beaver Bay, Minn.
