Emma Stroh
Emma Stroh died March 5, 2003, at a hospital in Bismarck, N.D.
Born Oct. 29, 1917, in Venturia, N.D., to Jacob and Rosina (Delzer) Engel, she was 85 years old.
She was grew up and attended school in North Dakota. On June, 29, 1939, she marriage Theodore Stroh in Venturia. The couple made their first home and farmed in McIntosh County for a few years and then moved to the Streeter, N.D., area, where they also farmed.
While in Streeter, she owned a cafe. In 1952, the couple moved to Valley City, N.D., and in 1966 moved to west to California, living in Davis and later in Woodland. In September 2001, they returned to North Dakota to be close to family, residing in Bismarck.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by her husband, Theodore of Bismarck; son, Robert and his wife Mary of Sacramento; daughter, Kathleen Ball and her friend Richard Tamke Jr. of Battle Lake, Minn.; grandson, Christopher Stroh of Farmington, Minn.; brother, Julius Engel and his wife Linda of Bismarck; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Boelter-Eastgate Funeral Service in Bismarck with the Rev. Jeff Tengesdal officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. There will be no public visitation.
SAUNDERS
Henry Faxon Saunders
Henry Faxon Saunders, born May 1, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo., died on May 29, 2004, at the University Retirement Community in Davis.
A lawyer who specialized in workers' compensation, he worked in private practice, primarily in Redding.
He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Preston Saunders of Davis; his son, Bradley Saunders; his daughter-in-law, Karen Saunders; and his granddaughter, Katie Saunders, all of Petaluma.
At his request, there will be no memorial service. Memorial contributions can be made to Yolo Hospice.
RONNING
Jane M. Ronning
Jane M. Ronning, a longtime Davis resident, died in her sleep on Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, from complications associated with Alzheimer's disease. She was 80 years old.
A memorial service celebrating her life will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St.
Born March 12, 1924, to Ben and Bess Matzke, she spent her childhood in Roundup, a small town in central Montana. After graduating from Roundup Senior High School, she continued her education at Montana State University in Bozeman. It was there that she met her future husband Magnar "Mag" Ronning. Her journey to Davis included stops in State College Pennsylvania and Stillwater Oklahoma before settling in Davis in 1958.
She enjoyed many activities. In her younger days, she was an avid golfer whose career highlight was winning the Stillwater Women's Club Championship in 1954. She was an active member of the Davis Dance Club and was a member of numerous local bridge clubs. She was a regular volunteer for the Friends of the Davis Public Library and an early supporter of the Explorit Science Center.
Her family says she delighted in the holidays, especially Christmas when she would spend weeks in her kitchen preparing elaborate cookie trays for friends and neighbors. In addition to raising her own family, she opened her home and heart to many of her husband's graduate students. Her family says she was happy to provide a warm and inviting place for students, many who were far from home.
Once her children were grown, she re-entered the workforce as a secretary. Her first secretarial experience was many years earlier as her husband's typist for his master's thesis and doctorate dissertation. She worked many years in a dean's office at UC Davis. After a brief retirement from the university, she worked for the Law Offices of Tom Frankel, where she continued to work until her final retirement.
She was preceded in death by her husband Mag, son Mikal and daughter Karen.
She is survived by her son Karl Ronning and his wife Heather of Davis; and her granddaughters, Kaity and Kristen, also of Davis.
She is further survived by her sister Alice Ann Graves of Billings, Mont.; nephews Greg Graves and his wife Claudia of Seattle; Alan Graves and his wife Mary Anna of Ballantine, Mont.; and Ben Graves and his wife Patty of Ronan, Mont.; and many friends she made through her travels, affiliation with the university, community service, work and social circles.
In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation may be offered in her name to the Explorit Science Center, P.0. Box 1288, Davis CA 95616. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
ROSALES
Silverio A. Rosales
Winters resident Silverio A. Rosales passed away at Sutter Davis Hospital on April 3, 2003. Born on June 20, 1917 in Teocaltiche Jalisco, Mexico, he was 85 years old. He was a resident of Yolo County for almost 60 years.
He came to the United States in the early 1940s looking for work. He worked in the surrounding area of Solano County and eventually ended up in Winters because of the agriculture. He fell in love with Winters and the people. He worked for the late Emilio Martin, his son T. R. Martin and including Mast and Sons in Arbuckle.
His favorite hobby was gardening. The chiles were the pride of his garden. He also enjoyed going to Cache Creek to play the slots.
Mr. Rosales is survived by his daughter, Martha Vasquez; grandchildren Vanessa and Robert Vasquez; brother and sister-in-law Balbino and Maria Rosales all of Winters; also, his brother and sister-in-law Arnulfo and Anita Rosales all of Teocaltiche, Jalisco, Mexico. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Mr. Rosales was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Rosales; brother Antonio and sisters Juanita and Euferosina Rosales.
A rosary took place on Monday, April 7 at St. Anthony Catholic Church. He was laid to rest next to his beloved wife at the Winters Cemetery on April 8.
ROSE
Helen Gwaltney Rose
Helen Gwaltney Rose died in Alderson Convalescent Hospital, Woodland Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at age 78.
Born Oct. 30, 1923, in Jacksonville, Ill., Mrs. Rose was the daughter of Horner William Tice and Ollie Daniel Tice of Jacksonville. She lived in Illinois and Missouri, then moved with her husband, the late Ralph C. Gwaltney Sr. to California in 1949. She was a homemaker who raised six children and was active in school and civic affairs, including the PTA, scouting, Daughter of the American Revolution, and Town and Country Club. Following the death of her husband in 1971, she became very active in the Order of Eastern Star and served four terms as Worthy Matron of Yolo Chapter. She marriage the late William O. Rose in 1977 and together they were very active in Masonic and community affairs. From 2000-2001, she served as a state officer in the Grand Chapter of Eastern Star in California.
Mrs. Rose is survived by her children, Ralph C., Jr., and Marjorie Gwaltney, Dan and Joanne Gwaltney, and David and Sue Gwaltney, all of Woodland, Steven and Deborah Gwaltney of South Lake Tahoe, and Sheila Gwaltney of Virginia.
She is also survived by her brother, Homer Dean Tice of Virginia; stepchildren, Katherine and Clarence Apel of Arcadia, William and Carol Rose and Clifford and Elizabeth Rose of Sacramento; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph C. Gwaltney Sr.; her second husband, William O. Rose; her eldest son, George Michael Gwaltney; and brother, Daniel Tice.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 9, at Christian Church, corner of College and Lincoln streets.
The family requests memorials be directed to Shriners' Hospital for Children.

ROSS
Janice (Jan) Edith Manne Ross
Janice (Jan) Edith Manne Ross of Davis died Jan. 24, 2004, at Sutter Davis Hospital following emergency surgery. She was 89.
She was born April 14, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the only child of Rena W. and Jacob Manne. She graduated from high school at age 16 and four years later received a degree from Adelphi College in New York, where she majored in French.
In 1939 she marriage Albert Ross. Soon after, they moved to Scarsdale, N.Y., where they raised their children, Eric and Kathy. She was able to help her husband with some of the bookkeeping necessary for his work as an attorney and be a stay-at-home mom as well.
She generously gave her time to causes she believed in, working as a volunteer for the American Red Cross, Jewish Family Services, the National Federation for the Blind and the local PTA. She and her husband also spent many hours working on Dwight D. Eisenhower's presidential campaigns. Her family said one of her most exciting memories was attending Eisenhower's second inaugural ball in Washington, D.C.
Her husband died in 1969 and although she missed him terribly, her family said she continued to live her life with courage and enthusiasm. She sought out interesting people and new friends, engaging in pursuits that provided her challenges and personal enrichment.
She enjoyed golf and played skillfully. She loved to travel and experience new cultures. She visited every continent except Antarctica and could recount stories from each trip in detail. She also made new friends at the card table over the years, her family said, playing both party and duplicate bridge while everyone enjoyed her sharp mind and quick wit. She was a voracious reader who could solve nearly any crossword puzzle and never found herself at a loss for words in any conversation.
In 1974 she went to work for H&R Block doing tax preparation. She continued to work for the company for 14 years. She served many of the same clients year after year, and even continued to prepare their taxes after she moved to Davis.
She also had a fine artistic side that showed in all aspects of her life, her family said. With a needle and thread she proved an expert seamstress, and could knit and crochet beautifully as well. The garden also provided her a labor of love. Her beautiful flower arrangements won countless awards at flower shows. She enjoyed sharing this gift with others, teaching flower arranging classes and judging competitions.
In 1988 she moved to Davis to be closer to her daughter's family and quickly became active in the community. She volunteered at All Things Right & Relevant when the consignment store opened and for the rest of her life. She kept playing bridge with a passion, took classes and enjoyed spending more time with her family.
In 2003 she moved to Covell Gardens. Though her health forced her to slow down, her family said she reached out for new friends and challenges. At 88, she began studying Spanish, joined a Dynaband exercise class and became a key player on the Covell Gardens Trivial Pursuit Team.
Always fiercely loyal to those she cared about, she will be greatly missed, her family said.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Eric Ross and Forshia Ross of Glendale, R.I.; her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Overstreet Hayes and Richard Hayes of Davis; her grandchildren, Tiffany Libardi, Daxton Ross, Jason and Lisa Overstreet; and her great-grandchildren, Devin Ross and Shanell, Chelsea, Alyssa and Anthony Libardi.
A memorial celebration of her life will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Davis, 27074 Patwin Road.
Donations in her name may be made to All Things Right & Relevant, 1640 E. Eighth St., a nonprofit thrift and consignment store that supports local charities.
PEEK
Dorothy G. Peek
Dorothy G. Peek died in Woodland Friday, March 22, 2002, at age 66.
Born Dec. 21, 1935, in Plainview, Texas, Mrs. Peek was the daughter of the late Guy Roy Absher and the late Thelma (Brown) Absher.
She marriage her husband 48 years ago. She was a member of the West Valley Baptist Church. Her hobbies included cross-stitching and a variety of handcrafts.
Mrs. Peek is survived by her husband, R. Grady Peek of Dunnigan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Phillip and Jean of Monticello, Minn., and Dennis and Dawn Peek of Sacramento; granddaughter, Allison Clark of Sacramento; brother, Fred Absher of Marysville, Wash.; sister, Janie Kee of Auburn, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private interment will be at Monument Hill Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. today, Tuesday, at the West Valley Baptist Church with Pastor John J. Evertson.
The family requests memorials be directed to the West Valley Baptist Church Building Fund in her memory.
