Kiyoshi Sadanaga
Kiyoshi Sadanaga died Aug. 29, 2004, at his Davis home. He was 84.
Born Feb. 6, 1920, in Onomea, Hawaii, he was raised in a small sugar cane plantation community.
During World War II, he served in the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion as part of the U.S. Army's 442nd Regimental Combat Team. He saw action in Italy, France and Germany.
He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii and a Ph.D. in plant genetics from Iowa State University. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 28 years, teaching and conducting research at Iowa State until his retirement in 1983.
Upon his retirement, he moved to Davis.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Lourdes; son, Albert of San Luis Obispo; daughter, Mary of Bristol, Conn.; sister, Akiyo Kitagawa of Oahu, Hawaii; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard Takase of Oahu, Hawaii, Asako Sadanaga of Oahu, Hawaii, Priscilla Sadanaga of Oahu, Hawaii, Ayano Sadanaga of Hawaii, Shizuno Sadanaga of Hawaii, Hilario Tuazon and his wife Norma of Davis, Victor Tuazon and his wife Caridad of Manilla, Phillipines, Jesus Tuazon of Anaheim, Antonio Tuazon and his wife Leticia of Quezom, Phillipines, and Angelita Tuazon of Des Moines, Iowa. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
After a private cremation, his ashes will be inurned Wednesday at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. A prayer service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at St. James Church, 200 W. 14th St., Davis.
SADLER
Essie W. Sadler
Essie Sadler passed away on Saturday, June 5, 1999, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina, after a short illness. Born Aug. 21, 1906, she was 92 years old.
Essie was a resident of Winters for 24 years, before moving to Fayetteville, North Carolina, 4 ½ years ago. She was a resident of Vallejo for 40 years, prior to living in Winters. She was a member of the Church of Christ for 75 years, and helped to build the church in Vallejo. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Silver Star #3. She was a homemaker all of her adult life.
Essie is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Ava C. and Lecil Treat of Travis Air Force base, and Vickie and David Barbosa of Winters; sons and their spouses, John and Tensia Sadler, and Charles and Anita Sadler, all of Fayetteville, North Carolina; brother, Lonzo Wagers of Lawton, Oklahoma; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held Thursday, June 10, from 3-7 p.m., at Skyview Funeral Chapel, 200 Rollingwood Drive in Vallejo. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 11, at 2 p.m., also at Skyview Funeral Chapel. Jim Mendenhall, from the Church of Christ in Vallejo, will officiate at the services. Burial will follow at Skyview Memorial Lawn in Vallejo.

SAECHAO
Naitziu Saechao
Naitziu Saechao died at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento on March 28, 2006. She was 80.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Woodland Family Worship Center, 386 West Beamer Street in Woodland, with graveside services to follow at 11 a.m. at Monument Hill Memorial Park, 35036 County Road 22 in Woodland.
A native of Laos, she was born on June 6, 1925, to Chiem and Fahm (Fahm) Saechao and came to the United States in 1981. She was a Sacramento resident for the past year. From a very young age, she worked in agriculture for more than 46 years.
She is survived by her daughter Ian Saelee and her husband Luang of Sacramento; sons Yao Chong and wife Lai of Sacramento, and John Lee and wife Kathy of Waterford; niece Chang Saelee of Woodland, as well as 20 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Chiem Saelee and a son, Ou Saelee.
Assisting the family with arrangements is Evergreen Funeral Service of Woodland.
SAFREED
Edward Duane "Eddy" Safreed
Edward Duane "Eddy" Safreed passed away on Nov. 29, 2004, at his home in Winters, following a short, courageous fight with ALS.
He was born on Aug. 10, 1953, on Mare Island, Vallejo, to Willis and Margrith (Hillman) Slayton.
He marriage Bette Kingsbury on his 35th birthday in 1988. He graduated from Mission Bay High School in San Diego in 1973. He first came to Winters when he was 15 years old to work in the apricot orchards. While here, he made many friends, so it became home to him again after high school and he resided in Winters for over 30 years.
Eddy was employed by Vacaville Sanitation and Flood Control District as a CWEA Certified Collection Systems Tech, II. Eddy was a member of the Descendents of the Mayflower Society, Rainier Valley Washington Historical Society, Yolo Sportsway, National Wild Turkey Federation, Wilderness Unlimited and Vallejo Elks Lodge.
Eddy enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing and both snow and water skiing. He loved get-togethers with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Bette, of Winters; adopted daughter Melinda Hernandez, of Vacaville; stepsons Travis Swol, of Roseville, and Aaron Swol, of Minnesota; also by his grandchildren, Dustin, Trevor and Esmeralda. He is also survived by many relatives and friends who will miss his company.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Margie; his father, Willis; his stepfather, George Safreed; brother Charles Safreed; grandparents Amy and Charles Safreed and Helen and Clarence Hillman, Jr.; also by a nephew, Logan Safreed. There will be a graveside service on Thursday, Dec. 2, at the Winters Cemetery, at noon. There will be a celebration of his life at a later date.
Contributions may be made in his name to the ALS Society, Sacramento Chapter, or the charity of the donor's choice.
SALAIZ
Frank Alvarado Salaiz
Frank Alvarado Salaiz died unexpectedly in Woodland Memorial Hospital Sunday, March 21, 2004, at age 62.
Born Sept. 11, 1941, in Auburn, he had been a Yolo county resident for the past 40 years. He grew up in Colfax, attending area elementary schools before moving to Yolo County. He was a 1959 graduate of Colusa County's Pierce High School, and attended Yuba College prior to entering UC Berkeley. He was employed as a teacher in bilingual education and served as a dispatcher for Yuba College Police.
Mr. Salaiz is survived by his daughters, Sharon Salaiz, Connie Roach and husband Steve of Yelm, Wash; grandchildren, Jonathan and Christopher Holden of Woodland, and Mehgan Hockman of Yelm, Wash. Also surviving are his sisters, Pat Frazier of Dunnigan, Betty Peņa of Mesa, Ariz., and Jeanette Roberts of Rocklin; brothers, Max Salaiz of Auburn, Joe Salaiz of Colton, Jess Salaiz of San Diego, Simon Monroy of Montebello, and Carl Monroy of Sacramento; numerous nieces and nephews; and family friend, Jerry Holden. He was preceded in death by his father, Juan Salaiz, in 1968; mother, Mary Salaiz, in 1996; and brother, Ben Monroy, in 1993.
Services: A graveside service is scheduled at 11 a.m. Friday, March 26, 2004, in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Woodland, with Father John Boll and Reverend Randy Vaughan officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Evergreen Funeral Services of Woodland.
SALAS
Maria Luz (Martinez) Salas
Maria Luz (Martinez) Salas died in Woodland Memorial Hospital on Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at age 76.
Born Nov. 27, 1926, in Sahuaripa, Sonora, Mexico, Mrs. Salas had been a Yolo County resident for 38 years. She was a homemaker all her life.
Survivors include her sons, Oscar Salas and wife Rachel of Natomas, Cesar Salas of Woodland; daughter, Diana S. Lopez and husband Jose of Woodland; sister, Estella M. Coronado of Sonora, Mexico; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years in 2002.
The family requests memorials be directed to charity of donor's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland
Services: Vigil at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Woodland. A Funeral mass at noon Friday, Jan. 24, also at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with a burial to follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park, Woodland.
SALAS
Rose Salas
Rose Salas died following a courageous fight with lung cancer Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at age 82.
Born Feb. 5, 1922, in Leesburg, N.M., Mrs. Salas was the daughter of the late Augustina and Reyes Garcia. She was a long time resident of Yolo County, living in Davis 1940 to 1970, and was a resident of Woodland. She spent most of her marriage life at home, taking care of her children. Later on she became bookkeeper for her husband's business before his death; she then went to work for Woodland Memorial Hospital until her retirement.
Survivors include her daughters, Ramona and husband Dale Lowry of Davis, Ernestine and husband Hector Salinas and Alberta Villanueva of Sacramento; sons, David and wife Lucia Salas of Yolo and Marshall and wife Cecile Salas of Pennsylvania; 29 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Marshall Salas; children, Ramon, Mary Ellen and Cecilia Salas; and grandsons, Michael and Vincent Salas.
The family requests memorials be directed to Yolo Hospice; or the American Cancer Society.
Service: Friends are invited to attend the Vigil service to be held at 6 p.m. today Thursday, July 8, at McNary's Chapel, Woodland. A funeral mass is scheduled to be said at 10 a.m. Friday, July 9, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Woodland. Burial to follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park, Woodland. McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.
