MOLSON

Addie Mae Logan Molson

Addie Mae Logan Molson died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, three weeks before her 88th birthday.

Born Feb. 3, 1914 to Alvin and Hattie Logan, in Guinda, Yolo County, Mrs. Molson was the fifth born of ten children. She was a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley where she received her bachelor of arts in Spanish in 1940, with a minor in French. After raising her two children, she returned to college obtaining an elementary school credential from Sacramento State College.

She was the first African American to teach in the North Sacramento school district, retiring in 1972. Teaching was her greatest passion and she taught, as a substitute teacher, in the Woodland School District for almost 15 years retiring, at the age of 75, in 1989.

Mrs. Molson was active in many organizations. She was a life member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. having pledged in 1932. She was a member of the Eta Gamma Omega Chapter in Sacramento. She was also a member of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society, International, Zeta Kappa Chapter, California, an Honorary life member of the California Congress of Parents and Teachers, Inc. The Yolo County Historical Society, and as a member of the Yolo County Historical Museum, was on the committee that saw the Woodland Opera House become an historical landmark, Town and Country, and a Charter Member of the Esparto High School Alumni Association. According to her family members, "she loved to accompany her husband Jim on the truck. She became a member of REACT. Her CB handle was Blue Bird and her husband was Early Bird."

She is survived by her son, James T. Molson Jr., daughter, Jeannette L. Molson, granddaughter, Michele L. Davenport, all of Woodland; grandson, William Thomas Davenport and his wife Jennifer of Sacramento; sister, Lorena Logan Taylor of Woodland and brothers, Roderick A. Logan of Sacramento and Carver D. Logan of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Mrs. Molson is also survived by her sister-in-law, Norma Logan of Oakland; nieces, Brenda Jones-Smith, Irma Logan Pendleton, Carmelita Logan Prince, Roberta Logan Hunt, Margo Lewis, Carolyn Logan Lewis, Estella Logan Hodge, Azalea Logan Whittaker; nephews, Lorin Lewis, Stephen Lewis, Carl Logan, Bill Logan, Rodney Logan, Hugo Logan, Jorge Logan, and Aaron Logan Jr. Also surviving are cousins; grandnieces; grandnephews; other relatives, extended family and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, James T. Molson Sr., on Feb. 12, 1997; brothers, Alvin A. Logan Jr., in 1988; Henry Booker Logan, in 1978; and Aaron C. Logan Sr., in 2000; and her sisters, Grace Logan Patterson, in 1990, Estella Logan Earl, in 1995 and Nellie Logan Lewis, in 2000.

A memorial service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at McNary's Chapel, Woodland.

Graveside service will be privately held at Monument Hill Memorial Park, Woodland.

The family requests memorials be directed to the Heart Association, American Stroke Association; or any organization of the donor's choice.

McNary's Chapel of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

SAMUELS

Henry E. Samuels

Henry Edward Samuels Passes away in St. Helena

Henry Edward Samuels, 88, died December 6, 1983 at his residence in St. Helena after a short illness.

Mr. Samuels was born Sept. 10, 1895, in Monticello and was raised there. He went to school on Blue Mountain and joined the U.S. Army in 1917. He served in the 23rd Engineers, primarily in France, and after the war served in the Occupational Forces in France. He was discharged in 1919 and returned to Monticello.

He marriage in Napa July 20, 1920, and continued to reside in Monticello and on a ranch in the valley. In 1955, the family moved to St. Helena and he retired at that time.

He was a member of the Veterans of World War I, American Legion Post 199 of Napa, a former member of the Napa County Agricultural Board, a former member of the Monticello Cemetery Association and a member of the Berryessa Old Timers.

Mr. Samuels is survived by his wife, Letha, of St. Helena; two daughters, Florence Mathison of Napa and Barbara White of Pope Valley; a brother, Alvin of Vacaville; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on December 9, in the chapel of Richard Pierce Funeral Service, 1660 Silverado Trail, with the Rev. William McCord and members of the Veterans of World War I officiating. Interment took place at Monticello Cemetery at Spanish Flat.

SANCHEZ

Eugenio Quinones Sanchez

Eugenio Quinones Sanchez passed away in his Madison residence on Aug. 28, 2000 at the age of 80. He was born in Durango, Mexico, on Nov. 15, 1919 to Primitivo and Maria Sanchez.

Mr. Sanchez was a resident of Yolo County for the past 30 years. He was employed by American Home Foods for 13 years prior to his retirement.

Mr. Sanchez is survived by his wife Lucia Sanchez of Madison; son, Miguel Sanchez of Madison and grandson Eddie Saragoza of Winters.

A vigil was held at McNary’s Chapel on Monday evening at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass was scheduled for 10 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church on Tuesday, Sept. 5, with interment to follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park.

McNary’s Chapel assisted the family with the arrangements.

SANDERS

Charles S. Sanders

Charles S. Sanders died at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002 at age 57.

He was born on April, 1944 in Bellvue, Ohio to Charles and Betty (Beck) Sanders. His mother survives him.

Mr. Sanders graduated from high school in Port Clinton, Ohio and went on to continue his education at Pinta Technological Institute, in Rossford, Ohio, completing his degree in tool and die machining.

He then joined the U.S. Army and served for the next four years with the First Air Calvary, part of the Americal Division, in the Republic of Vietnam during the Vietnam era conflict.

He received his United States Army Commendation Medial, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and earned Sharpshooter and Marksman Medals.

After completing his military service, he continued working in his career field as a tool and die technician, last working with Ames Inc. in Woodland.

Mr. Sanders marriage his wife of 38 years, Hanni (Edwards) Sanders in 1964, and they began their life at Fort Benning, Ga. After returning to Port Clinton, Ohio, they then moved to Arizona and then settled in Yolo County with their family in 1994. According to family members, he was a very dedicated family, man and loved family outings, and hunting and fishing with his sons.

Mr. Sanders is survived by his wife Hanni Sanders of Woodland; sons Charles Steven Sanders IV and wife Mary of Yuba City, Randy Sanders and wife Cory of Cottonwood, and Paul Sanders and wife Chris of Gerber.

He is also survived by grandchildren Sunny and Lucky Sanders of Yuba City, Justin and Zachary Sanders of Woodland and Jayden Sanders of Gerber; sisters Sheri Wight of Lima, Ohio and A Jean Twinning of Rising Sun, Ohio; and nephews Tim and Bill Wight of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his father Charles S. Sanders Jr.

Funeral services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8 at Kraft Brothers Funeral Chapel, 175 Second St. Woodland. Military honors will accompany the service.

Private Interment will take place at a later date. No visitation is scheduled prior to service.

In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to the UC Davis Cancer Research Center, 2315 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817.

Kraft Brothers Funeral Directors is assisting the family with arrangements.

SMAIL-WHITSETT

Corrine Smail-Whitsett

Corrine Smail-Whitsett died Monday, Feb. 7 at age 45.

Mrs. Smail-Whitsett was born May 7, 1959 to Gilbert Smail and the late Connie Smail. She had been a Yolo County resident for four years. She attended Alma Heights Christian Academy and graduated from Terra Nova High School in Pacifica in 1977. She worked as a waitress for Sea Bowl and Vallemar Station in Pacifica.

Survivors include Mrs. Smail-Whitsett's husband of four years, Richard Whitsett of Woodland; her ex-husband, John Grasso of Fernley; her daughters, Victoria Grasso of Antioch and Valerie Grasso of Woodland; her stepdaughters, April Whitsett of Woodland and Theresa Burges of Tulsa, Okla.; her step grandchildren, A.J., Rosemary and Victoria Burges of Tulsa, Okla.; her father, Gilbert Smail of Pacifica and her sister, Susan Dicus of Idaho Falls, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her mother, Connie Smail.

The family requests memorials in Mrs. Smail-Whitsett's name be directed to the Corrine Smail-Whitsett Memorial Fund, c/o U.S. Bank, 120 W. Court St., Woodland, 95695.

Services: Viewing is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17 at Chapel of the Highlands, 194 Millwood Dr., Millbrae. A funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18 at Chapel of the Highlands. Interment will follow the service at Sky Lawn Memorial Park, Route 35 and Highway 92, San Mateo. Chapel of the Highlands is assisting the family with arrangements.

SMALL

James E. Small

James E. Small died on Sept. 2, 2002. Born on May 12, 1921, in Springfield, Ill., he was 81 years old.

After a phone call from his mother, Catherine, telling him the phone company was hiring, he came to Santa Rosa and began a career with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph that lasted almost 42 years. This was interrupted by his service in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. He return to Santa Rosa afterward and resumed his career.

He retired in 1983.

He loved to keep busy on projects for family and friends.

He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, a philanthropic organization of telephone employees and families who perform volunteer work in the community. With this group he built handicapped access at state parks and dressed as Santa Claus. They visited orphanages and hospitals in Europe and Asia, dispensing gifts donated by local merchants at home.

He was a member of SIRS, and was a lifetime member of Theodore Roosevelt Post 21 of the American Legion. He and his wife Olly volunteered at the Luther Burbank Center and at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

After moving to Davis in 2000 they were auxiliary volunteers at Sutter Davis Hospital and at the Davis Senior Center.

He was the beloved husband of Olly Small and the loving father of John Small of Sacramento, and James Small and his wife Susan of Sebastapol. He was the adored grandfather of Kathryn Small.

He was preceded in death by his brother, George Small, and sisters, Ruth Ross and Betty MacCallum.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Saint Phillips Church in Occidental. Contributions in his memory should be made to the SBC-Pacific Bell Pioneers, Redwood Council/Redwood Life Member Club, Golden Bear Chapter, P.O. Box 160633 Sacramento, CA 95816.

Funeral arrangements are being made by Davis Funeral Chapel.

SMITH

Abner Byron Smith

Last rites held for A. B. Smith, Sr., 79

Abner Byron Smith, Sr., 79, a native of Nebraska, died in Sacramento on Thursday, February 3, 1966. He is the brother-in-law of Ray F. Sears of Winters.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys; a sister, Mrs. Ruby Myers of Paradise; a son, Abner Byron Smith, Jr., of Daly City; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Bascum, Oakland, and Mrs. Nadine Troy, Piedmont; two step-sons, Harry Pugh of Pittsburg and Leslie Pugh of Guam.

Funeral services were under the auspices of the Masonic Fraternity on Monday, February 7, in the Mission Chappel of Andrews and Greilich on Fruitridge Road in Sacramento.

Interment was in the Sierra Hills Memorial Park.
