SANGER
Charles Redfern Sanger
Charles Redfern Sanger died March 17, 2003, at the home of his granddaughter, Anna-Marie, and her husband Jeff in rural Yolo County. Born Nov. 4, 1913, he was 89.
Grandpa, as he asked everyone to call him, had been a local resident for nine years. He was born in rural Pennsylvania outside Erie and spent his formative years on a truck farm there, learning about plants and livestock, and how to work hard.
"That was back in the horse and buggy days" was a favorite postscript to one of his wonderful stories about his early life and the many interesting people he met. During the Depression, he worked at many jobs, including chemical plant laborer and pulpwood dock hand, and he excelled at all.
During this time, he met and marriage his beloved Annie, his one and only true love.
They moved to California during World War Ii and he worked on the docks. After the war, he and Annie decided a change was in order, so they moved from Oakland to Nevada City and he got a job at one of the many lumber mills in the area. He would be working the green chain for the rest of his career, a hard, demanding job even for a young man.
After his retirement in the 1970s, he spent much of his time fishing and making little improvements around the house (by this time, he and Annie were living in Grass Valley).
Grandpa spent much time and effort on the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, listening to their problems, helping them through difficult times, and loving them unconditionally.
His Annie pre-deceased him in the early 1990s and his health began to falter. He moved down to his granddaughter's home and enriched the lives of all who came in contact with him. His open and generous nature was an inspiration in an era not as kind as his own. In his 89 years of life, he never met a stranger, nor made an enemy.
He was deeply loved, and will be forever missed. He is survived by his daughter, Allene Tucker, and granddaughter, Lisa Guilbaut of Grass Valley; his granddaughter, Anna-Marie and her husband Jeff Schwab of Woodland; great-grandsons, Adrian Tucker of Davis and Gavin Tucker-Boulet of Jamestown; and his cousin, John "Jack" Carney and his wife Josie, whose many letters cheered his heart.
The family would especially like to thank Dr. Ron Sprinkle for his kind and loving care of Grandpa, the nursing staff at the UC Davis Medical Center, and above all the home health nurses from Woodland Memorial Home Health Services for making it possible that he remain at home.
At his request, no services will be held; the family requests that those who feel so inclined indulge in random acts of kindness in his name.
