Barbara Louise Waters
Barbara Louise Waters died peacefully at her Davis home Dec. 5, 2004, in the loving company of family and friends. She was 55.
A celebration of her life begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Davis, 27074 Patwin Road. Friends and acquaintances will be welcome to share their remembrances of her as part of the program.
Born Nov. 29, 1949, in Trenton, N.J., she graduated from Dover-Sherborn Regional High School in Dover, Mass. She received her bachelor's degree in English from Colby College in Waterville, Maine and a master's in education from Northeastern University in Boston. Upon her graduation from Colby, she joined the education staff of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library in Boston. She also pursued pre-medical course work at Northeastern and after a cross-country bicycle trip with close friend Pat Montgomery, continued her medical studies at UC Davis. Later she became a certified massage therapist, with a practice in Davis.
An avid traveler, she traveled to China and the Chinese Olympic Training Center as part of her interest and work in massage therapy. Other travels during her life included trips to Machu Picchu, Peru; Ganeshpuri, India; bicycling in Germany and Austria; and over the years, numerous visits to family and friends on the East Coast.
She was active in Siddha Yoga and other meditation groups, the Davis Bike Club, the American Massage Therapy Association, and with her fellow massage therapists in the greater Davis area, an informal wine tasting group for 27 years, her children's schools, and her extensive network of family and friends all across the country.
Her family said her deeply spiritual nature - which drew strongly from Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian traditions - was a source of guidance and inspiration to all who knew and loved her, and her beliefs influenced her encounters with everyone she met. Even the most casual of encounters engaged her full and compassionate attention.
Her family and friends marveled at her phenomenal memory. She never forgot anyone's birthday, and could recite French dialogues memorized years before in High School.
Diagnosed with a rare metastatic cancer in 1997, she pursued unique and alternative therapies that, along with her spiritual practice, enabled her to remain active with family, friends and the community.
The Waters family is grateful for the excellent care and compassion of Yolo Hospice, especially Waters' Hospice nurse, Jody Norton. Gratitude is extended as well to Patricia Lindsay, and the many friends and family who have been regular visitors, for the many errands run, and the constant stream of flowers, cards, letters and phone calls made to Waters and her family throughout this long journey.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Waters; her children, Merriss Waters, a second-year student at UC Davis Veterinary School, and Martin Waters, a second-year student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
She is further survived by her parents, Martin and Lillian Waters of Sherborn, Mass.; three sisters, Catherine Waters of New Haven, Conn., Deidree Waters of Feeding Hills, Mass., and Mara Prentice of Warwick, R.I.; a niece, Sophia Nasti of Feeding Hills, Mass.; and two nephews, Emil Nasti of Feeding Hills, Mass. and Dylan Prentice, of Warwick, R.I.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to assist her children with college tuition. Those wishing to do so may contribute to the Barbara Waters Memorial Fund, First Northern Bank, 434 Second St., Davis, CA 95616. Donations may also be made in Barbara's memory to Yolo Hospice. P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617-1014.

Katie Lynn Watt (1 of 2)
Katie Lynn Watt passed away at UC Davis Medical Center on Friday, Nov. 19, 2004. She was born Sept. 4, 1979 in Red Bluff. Her parents are Tom Watt III and Bertha "Bertie" and Leroy Williams of Woodland.
Katie lit up the world with her smile and friendly personality. All who knew Katie loved her. She so enjoyed Monday night bowling with her Christian bowling league. Katie deeply loved Jesus, and he gave her great comfort when she was down or not feeling well. She often told us that our lifetime was only a "dash." And when our dash was up and Jesus said it was our time, we would go home to live with him.
Katie's life was blessed by three very special friends: J.R. Darneill of Anderson, Candice Bright of Woodland and Larry Turner Jr. of Red Bluff. In addition to her parents, she leaves behind many relatives who were very dear to her, including Grandma Mary of Yuba City, Grandma Betty of Woodland, Grandma Watt of Red Bluff, Grandma Bailey of Eagle, Idaho; her loving "Sis, " Carrie Dunagan of The Dalles, Ore.; a nephew, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Some of Katie's happiest memories are her high school years, 1993-97, at Red Bluff High School. She loved student government. Ivan Hanson, Laried Richards, Mr. Avilla and Richard Clap were her guardian angels in school.
Katie was born with spina bifida and lived her life in a power wheelchair. However, she never considered herself "confined to a wheelchair." She faced each of the many obstacles throughout her short 25 years with bravery, faith, optimism and her characteristic smile. Katie enjoyed making jewelry for family and friends and she delighted in sharing the stuffed animals and gifts she received following her many surgeries with other children in hospitals.
The highlight of Katie's life was her Make-A-Wish trip to Disneyland when she was 12 years old. She had the time of her life a wonderful dream vacation that gave her memories she has cherished throughout her life.
Her mama, papa and daddy will miss Katie deeply she has been the focus of our lives.
Katie's life has been touched and greatly enriched by many special people. Katie's family sends a special thank you to the Marcy brothers, Tim Hudson of the Oakland A's and Steve Young of the San Francisco 49ers for their kindness to Katie. Also thanks to John Growney for his friendship with Katie and inviting her many times to his ranch to ride horses. She enjoyed those rides so much.
Thank you to Peachy Harrop and Doris Parsons, her school nurses, for their loving care, Far Northern Regional Center and Alta Regional Center for their constant support and to Summer House and their loving staff. Katie always looked forward to her friends coming to sit with her on Friday evenings so Papa and Mama could have a little respite. Thanks also to California Crippled Children Services and Ronald McDonald House for providing us much needed help.
Also, a heartfelt thank you to Suzan Brasch, our dear friend who lived across the street, for always being there for us, and for her family's love for Katie. And a very special thank you to Zack and Arla Farmer, Zim and Angela Vdovich, Tim Cole, John Tracy and Doug and Becky Gordon for your constant love and support.
Katie "loved" going to see her doctors. Boy did she ever! Our sincere gratitude to Drs. Kalman, Bonekat, Long, Stone, Bogan, Arrons, Clark, Dunn, Vovakes and all of the guardian angels at Woodland Hospital, Dr. Tate, Dr. John Clark and Betsy McCone at Stanford Rehab Specialists, and the Medical Intensive Care Unit at UC Davis, Medical Center who kept Katie comfortable and treated her with so much love and compassion. God bless you all.
Until we see you again in heaven Katie, God bless you sweetheart. Thanks for the memories.
