Arthur Einor Wayrynen
Arthur Einor Wayrynen, 86, of Yountville, formerly of Woodland, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at the Holderman Hospital in Yountville.
Born on Sept. 10, 1916, in Castlewood, S.D., Mr. Wayrynen was the son of the late Charley and Minnie Grape Wayrynen, and one of 13 children. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and later worked for Barney Meister in the Sutter Basin as a farmer. In 1944, he marriage the former Tillie Schreiner and the couple made their home in Woodland. Mr. Wayrynen spent more than 35 years as an automotive mechanic for Bee Line service and also the Midland Chevrolet Dealership, while Tillie spent her career as a postmaster with the U.S. Postal Service. Mr. Wayrynen was a life member of the American Legion Yolo Post 77, VFW Post 1985 and the Disabled American Veterans. He moved to Yountville in November 1998 to become a resident of the California Veterans Home.
Mr. Wayrynen is survived by his son, George Wayrynen and his wife Sharon of Woodland, and brother, Virgil Wayrynen, also of Woodland. Also surviving are grandchildren, Ryan, Shawn, Casey and Megan Wayrynen. Mr. Wayrynen was preceded in death by his wife, Tillie, in 1986.
The family asks that memorials be made to the California Veterans Home Post Fund, P.O. Box 1200, Yountville, 94599. Arrangements are under the direction of Treadway & Wigger Funeral Chapel, Napa.
Services: A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Woodland with ceremonies being conducted by Mr. Wayrynen's American Legion Post.
RUSSELL
Richard L. Russell
Richard L. "Dick" Russell died Nov. 24, 2000, at Sutter Davis Hospital in Davis. Born May 9, 1915, in Viola, Ill., to J. Elmer and Carrie Breckenridge Russell, he was 85.
He graduated from Viola High School and lived in the Viola, Matherville and Milan areas of Illinois nearly all of his life. He moved to Woodland with his wife, Evelyn, in August 1999 to be close to their son, Rick and his family.
At 19, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and was a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He worked for more than 25 years at J.I. Case Co. in Bettendorf, Iowa, retiring in 1974.
He is survived by their son, Rick and his wife, Sharon of Woodland; daughter, Cherie Peterson of Alexis, Ill.; granddaughter, Carrie Russell-Lewis of Woodland; step granddaughters Lori Lemon Messerschmitt and Lison Lemon Chambers of Ottumwa, Iowa; one great-grandson and four step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Evelyn G. Russell, in July; a brother, Walter Russell; a sister, Ruth Woodruff; a stepdaughter, Micaela Lemon Peterson; and a stepson, William Lemon.
Respecting his wishes, there will be no services in California. Graveside services for him and his wife will be held in Illinois in the spring. Donations in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society.
RUSSELL
Robert (Bob) D. Russell
Bob Russell died peacefully on April 15, 2006, at the age of 75.
A celebration of his life will run from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at the El Macero Country Club.
He was born in Long Island, Kan., and later moved to Vallejo. After graduating from Sacramento State University, he worked as a labor relations consultant for Kaiser Engineers.
He moved his family to Davis in 1964 where he started his own business. Active in the local business community, he was once president of the Davis Chamber of Commerce. After working for other firms in labor relations, he retired in 1996. He lived in El Macero for more than 26 years where he was an active golfer and president of the board of directors.
His family said he enjoyed golfing, and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Irene. They had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
He is also survived by his children, Bob Russell, Barney Russell, Carolyn Montoya and Susan Constant; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
RUSSICK
Joan Young Russick
Joan Young Russick died at her home in Sacramento on Aug. 25, 2005. She was 77.
She was born on Feb. 2, 1928, in San Francisco, and grew up in Burlingame and Berkeley.
She was a Girl Scout leader in Davis and Berkeley. An avid gardener, she spent many hours tending her garden and enjoying its natural beauty. The garden contained many hues of the color blue, which she loved passionately.
She loved people who sang to her, her family said. But most important to her was her large, extended family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Russick, her brothers, Vincent and Frank B. Young, and a granddaughter, Sarah Ann Lilly.
She is survived by her brother, Robert Young; sister, Elizabeth Montgomery; children, Mary Myers and her husband Donald F. Myers, of North Carolina, Anne R. Pettit of Sacramento, Robert Y. Russick and his wife Gail Russick of Williams, Jane Russick-Smith and her husband W. Bradley Smith of Colorado, Margaret Heath and her husband Charles Heath, and Susan Fenwick and her husband Jeffery Fenwick of South Carolina; grandchildren, Brian and Heather Lilly, Robert H. Russick, Katherine, Caroline and John Fenwick, James Russick Smith, Casey and Hunter Heath, Rosalie Pettit, Forrest and Donald McElvy, Luneda Chrispin, Calais Johnson and Christina Pettit; great-grandchildren are Jace, Brett and Alexea Lilly; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will begin at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at 740 Regatta Drive in Sacramento.
Donations in her name may be made to the Natomas Charter Performing Arts and Fine Arts Academy.
RUSSICK
Robert F. Russick
Robert Russick died peacefully at his Sacramento home on Sept. 9, 2004, surrounded by family.
Born Dec. 9, 1926 in Santa Ana, he was 77.
He served in the U.S. Navy for four years and spent time working for the Berkeley Fire Department. In 1968, he moved to Davis, where he worked as a contractor. He was a building inspector at UC Davis for 20 years.
Moving to Sacramento in 1989, he retired from UC Davis two years later. Upon retirement, he worked in the Coast Guard Reserve in Sacramento. His family says he loved telling stories and jokes.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan Russick; children, Mary Myers of Goshen, N.Y., Anne Pettit of Sacramento, Robert Russick of Williams, Jane Russick-Smith of West Minster, Colo., Meg Heath of Summerville, S.C., and Susan Senwick of Summerville, S.C.
He is further survived by 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 640 Hawthorn Lane in Davis.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Natomas Charter Performing & Fine Art Academy.
BROWN
Nancy Ann Brown
Nancy Ann Brown of Davis died unexpectedly on May 21, 2002. Born Aug. 21, 1939, in Rochester, N.Y., to the late Charles and Helen Thompson, she was 62.
She attended the University of Vermont and graduated from the University of Hawaii. She was a junior high school teacher for 28 years, many of which were spent at Lee Junior High School in Woodland. She was a member of the Woodland Education Association, the California Teacher’s Association and the California Retired Teachers Association.
She and her husband, John, were world travelers, having completed 48 cruises since 1991. She created extensive photo albums from all of their trips. Her hobbies were theater, reading books and athletics. She and her husband participated actively in delivering Meals on Wheels through the Davis Senior Center.
She is survived by her husband, John C. Brown; stepdaughters, Susan Larson of Carmichael and Dr. Nancy L. Brown of Modesto; grandchildren, Christopher, Rachael and Jonathan Metcalf of Carmichael and a brother, James Thompson of Rochester, N.Y.
Memorial Services will begin at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Davis Funeral Home, 116 D St., followed by a celebration of her life at the Stonegate Country Club, 919 Lake Blvd. There will be a private interment. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Elderly Nutrition Program, 40 N. East St., Suite C, Woodland, CA 95776.
RABBANI
Ruhiyyih Rabbani
Baha'is in Davis, as well as millions throughout the world, are mourning the death on Jan. 19, 2000, of Ruhiyyih Rabbani, widow of Shoghi Effendi Rabbani, the late head of the Baha'i Faith. She died peacefully after a long illness at the age of 89.
She provided the last living link with the family of Baha'u'llah, the founder of the Baha'i Faith. She marriage his great-grandson, Shoghi Effendi Rabbani, then head of the Baha'i Faith, in 1937, and went to live in Haifa, Israel, at the administrative center of the religion.
She worked as Rabbani's researcher, secretary, confidante and counselor, as he single-handedly guided the growing worldwide Baha'i community. Her vast correspondence and personal contacts, at once dignified and informal, endeared her to thousands of Baha'is.
A local Baha'i and resident of Davis, Diane Hill, lived in Haifa in the mid-1980s and had the opportunity to work with Mrs. Rabbani for 3 1/2 years. Hill recalls her Rabbani as being ``an extraordinary person who possessed wit and compassion and bestowed it amply upon all with whom she came in contact.'
Throughout her life, Mrs. Rabbani worked tirelessly for the realization of the oneness of humanity, focusing in particular on the environment and indigenous cultures. A film producer, poet and lecturer, Mrs. Rabbani also was a widely read author. Her biography of her husband, ``The Priceless Pearl, ' has appeared in many editions and many languages.
Mrs. Rabbani has been the pre-eminent member of the worldwide Baha'i community since the death of her husband in 1957. She was one of a group of nine who served as custodians of the Baha'i World Center until the election of the international governing body, the Universal House of Justice, in 1963.
Later in her life, Mrs. Rabbani traveled widely, crossing all continents and visiting 185 countries. She was received by many heads of state and government, including Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of India, Prince Philip of England and the Secretary General of the United Nations, Javier Perez de Cuellar.
A commemoration of her life will be held in Davis at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Adib Rowhani. Dr. Rowhani's cousin was under Mrs. Rabbani's employ for more than 20 years and shared many of his experiences in Haifa with family members here in Davis.
