Emily E. Rustin
Former local teacher dies
Emily Elmina Rustin, 76, a school teacher with the Winters Joint Unified School District from 1964 to 1971, died March 31, 1991, in her home in Monterey.
Born February 10, 1915 in Rochelle, Illinois, she moved to Monterey 15 years ago, where she was active in the Senior Citizens Club and her church thrift store.
A memorial service was held April 7 at St. Mary’s by the Sea Episcopal Church in Pacific Grove. Cremation was at the Little Chapel by the Sea, with ashes to be scattered at sea.
Mrs. Rustin is survived by two sons, Commander Mike Reynolds of Watsonville, and Dr. Thomas Reynolds of Charlotte, North Carolina; a brother, Edmond Scheer of Tallahassee, Florida and a granddaughter.
Her first husband, Jack Reynolds, died in 1977, and her second husband, John Rustin, passed away in 1986.
RUSSEL-MENDONSA
Virginia Russel-Mendonsa
Virginia Russel-Mendonsa passed away peacefully in her Sacramento Home on Nov. 21, 2003. She was born on Feb. 18, 1938, and was raised in Winters.
She is survived by her three children, four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; also by her sisters Charlene Russel-Martin, Lavada Russel-McDowell and her brother Jack and wife, Beverly of Marysville.
A rosary will be held at the George L. Klumpp, Chapel of Flowers, Riverside Boulevard and Second Avenue in Sacramento Avenue in Sacramento on Monday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, dec. 2, at 10 a.m. in the same locations. Immediately following the services, she will be buried
next to her departed husband, Richard, at St. Mary's Cemetery, 65th Street and 21st Avenue.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Kaiser Hospice.
RUUD
Robert P. Ruud
Robert Peter Ruud of Davis died May 30, 2002, at University Retirement Community in Davis. He was 76.
He was born Jan. 9, 1926, to Mauritz and Helga Ruud in San Pedro. He was one of three children.
In 1944, upon finishing high school, he entered the U.S. Navy, where he served as a machinist until 1946. He then pursued his education at UC Berkeley, where he received a degree in mechanical engineering and went to work for North American Aviation in Inglewood.
At this time, he marriage Doris Ann Uselman and the two began their family. In 1956, he went to work for Avery Dennison International Corp. as a technical manager. He retired from this position in 1990.
He spent his retirement years traveling with his wife all over the world to such places as Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Alaska, Canada and Hawaii. He also enjoyed photography, playing bridge and was an avid reader.
He was also very active with the Kiwanis Club, where he donated many hours in service to his community. Additionally, he was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
He was described as a very devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, and will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Emmy J. Ruud.
He is survived by his wife, Doris A. Ruud of Davis; sons David M. Ruud and his wife Bambi of Corona, Roger P. Ruud of Upland and Chris O. Ruud and his wife Charlotte of Cameron Park.
He is also survived by the following Rudd grandchildren: Sarah N., Bryan D., Robert O. and Neil W.
He is further survived by brother Maurice O. Rudd and Dr. Robert Fristrom.
Charitable contributions may be made in his name to the Parkinson's Disease Association of Sacramento Valley at P.O. Box 601065, Sacramento, CA 95860-1065.
At this time, no services will be held, per the family's request. Davis Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
RYALL
Leonard Burton Ryall
Leonard Burton Ryall died Dec. 26, 2004, at his home in Davis, at the age of 61. He had been suffering from cancer for three years.
A memorial meeting will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, in the Blanchard Room at the Davis Public Library, 315 E. 14th St.
Born in Chicago on Jan. 3, 1943, Ryall moved with his parents to California when he was a small child. He graduated from San Francisco State College in 1968, and went to work for the state of California as a systems analyst in the Department of Mental Health. He later transferred to the California Post-Secondary Education Commission, where he worked until his retirement in 2001.
He had lived in Davis since 1973.
He is survived by his daughter, Sabrina Ryall of Sacramento, and his son, Dylan Ryall of Davis.
Instead of flowers, friends are asked to make a contribution in his name to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104, an organization Ryall supported for many years.
GULLEY
Anthony "Tony" Gulley
Anthony "Tony" Gulley died in Woodland, Friday, July 23, 2004 at age 46.
Born May 18, 1958, in San Francisco, Mr. Gulley had been a Yolo County resident for 14 years.
Survivors include Mr. Gulley's sister, Del Hightower; his niece, Lindsay and foster mother Rheba Hightower.
Services: Interment is scheduled at Sierra View Memorial Park, Marysville. North Sacramento Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
GULY
Erik M. Guly
Erik Matthew Guly died on April 1, 2000, following an accident in his home. Born on July 11, 1967, in Newport Beach, to Ron and Trina Guly, he was 32.
He had been a Davis resident since August 1981.
He graduated from Davis High School in 1985 and from Sacramento State University in 1990, where he graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in business and a concentration in finance.
He worked as a financial analyst.
He is survived by his wife of nine years, Maya; 4-year-old daughter, Jessica; parents, Ron and Trina Guly; sister, Ingrid; in-laws; grandparents; aunt; uncle; and several cousins.
Erik was a member of Grace Valley Christian Center, which will hold a memorial service for him at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
GUNASEKARA
Rabindranath B. Gunasekara
Rabindranath B. Gunasekara, a UC Davis graduate student and campus opportunities development officer, died of a heart attack Aug. 3, 2003, during a visit to his hometown of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He was 43.
The former program coordinator at the Center for South Asia Studies at UC Berkeley, from 1995-2001, he earned a bachelor's degree in international relations and a master's degree in history from UCD. He returned to Davis to pursue his doctorate in geography, with Professor Janet Momsen supervising, and work full-time for the University Outreach and International Programs office.
He was active in a number of community programs, including the campus book project committee, which selects a book about issues of diversity and plans activities around it for students, faculty and staff.
He was traveling in Asia working on his dissertation at the time of his death. He returned home to Sri Lanka as a guest of the Royal College Rugby Union, acting as honorary captain of a team of past players for their 25th anniversary reunion.
Known as "Raba, " during the late 1970s he led not only led the college's rugby team, which contained seven future national team players, but excelled in track and field, basketball and rowing. He also played rugby at the club level, and later led a UCD team to victory over UCLA.
His Davis home became a gathering place for Sri Lankans in the area. One newspaper in his homeland called him "a lovable character and outstanding sportsman." He was a doting father, the story noted, who always kept a picture book of his family with him.
He is survived by his wife Niromi, daughters Natasha and Alexandra, parents Valentine and Ranee, sister Nashtaka, brothers, Suranjith, Devindranath, Ajith, Surendranath, Indrajith and Amrith, father- and mother-in-law Dr. Ronald and Sita Wijewantha, extended family and friends.
A memorial service to honor his life will be held Aug. 16, 2003, at the Unitarian Church in Davis, 27074 Patwin Road. A funeral was held in Sri Lanka Thursday, Aug. 8, 2003, and was followed by cremation.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to a fund in Sri Lanka that will support a scholarship at his alma matter, to be given to a student "displaying the ideals of team effort and sportsmanship Raba embodied on the rugby and cricket fields, " and to buy sporting equipment for underprivileged children, as he did during his lifetime.
