SMITH

Marjorie Ann Smith, 84.

Born in the small village of Woodville, in Tulare County, and raised on an orange grove in nearby Woodlake, Marjorie and her identical twin sister Miriam both retained the small town agricultural roots and sensibilities of Central California, and grew to become the toast of Washington D.C. as the debutante nieces of Bay Area Congressman Albert E. Carter. The daughter of Donald Smith and Oma Grimsley Smith, she graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science. Marjorie was enjoying the social life in Washington when she was introduced to her future husband, Army Captain and White House Aide, Hule A. Smith.

Marjorie and Hule were wed in a splendid ceremony in the National Cathedral in Washington, attended by such notable personalities as Treasury Secretary Margaret Chase Smith. They moved to Los Gatos, and later Burlingame where they raised their two sons Carter Austin Smith and Conover Carnes Smith. She was active in the Assistance League where she often worked in its thrift store. After Hule's death in 1995 she moved to Woodland to live with her twin sister Miriam Jones where they pursued their love of painting, travel and assisting the less fortunate. Her sons were at her side when she passed at home on Tuesday morning. Marjorie had been attended in her final days by a loving extended family, including Deborah Murray, and Don and Terri Jones.

Her sisters Dorothy Mayfield and Miriam Jones, as well as her sons Carter Smith and his companion Linda Dravis of Palm City Florida, Conover C. Smith and his wife Connie DeGrange of Sunol, and her grandchildren, Andrew Smith and Erica and Martin DeGrange Smith survive her.

A memorial service will be held for her on Friday, May 2nd at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Woodland at 11 a.m. Donations may be made to the Yolo County Hospice or the Boys and Girls Club of the North Valley.

SMITH

Mary Ellen Smith

Mary Ellen Smith died unexpectedly at her Roseville home on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at age 47.

She was born on Dec. 21, 1956, in Woodland, to William E. and Mary Elizabeth (Edgington) Smith.

Mary Ellen loved the outdoors, camping, attending the Baptist Church and was extremely close to and loved her family, children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Evan Lee Torrez of Carmichael, daughters, Melissa E. Jurrison and husband Derrick of Carmichael, and Sara Ann Martin of Couer d'Alene, Idaho, and four grandchildren.

She is also survived by her father William E. Smith of Sacramento, her brother Dennis L. Smith of Eugene, Oregon, and sister, Christie Sue Bernhagen and husband Bob of Nashville, Tenn., and five nieces and nephews. Her Aunt, Gertrude Creamer of Esparto and Uncle David Edgington of Woodland also survive her.

Also surviving are former husbands Dan Paul Johnston and Ron Martin.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Elizabeth Smith in 1995 and a brother, William E. Smith Jr, in 1962.

Services: A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Capay Cemetery, Esparto. Rev. Elmer Prout will officiate. Friends and family are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in Mary Ellen's memory be made to a charity of the donar's choice.

Kraft Bros. of Woodland is assisting the family with the arrangements.

SMITH

Nathaniel D. Smith

Nathaniel D. Smith died in Holiday, Mo. on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004 at age 71.

Mr. Smith was born July 21, 1933 in Fort Worth, Texas and had been resident of Woodland for 28 years.

Survivors include Mr. Smith's mother, Ruby, his daughter and three sons, several grandchildren, sisters, and brothers.

Services: Visitation is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7 at Miller Funeral Home, 507 Scott St., Folsom. The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8 at Miller Funeral Home. Interment will be at Lakeside Memorial Lawn in Folsom. The Miller Funeral Home of Folsom is assisting the family with arrangements.

SMITH

Norma M. Smith

Norma McAfee Smith, a retired UC Davis librarian, died March 31, 2001, at Kaiser Hospital in Sacramento. She was 91.

She was born in Stockton to James and Nina McGaffey McAfee and grew up in Berkeley, graduating from UC Berkeley. She was a receptionist/docent at the Ansel Adams Gallery in San Francisco and worked for the Park Service until World War II, when she became an executive secretary at the Richmond Tank Depot.

She met her future husband, George Smith, at that time, and they were marriage in 1942. He was a gunner on a B-17 bomber, assigned to Europe. His plane was shot down over Germany and he was a prisoner of war for two years.

After the war ended, they moved to Montana, where he earned a degree and then began teaching at the University of Washington in Seattle, and she worked in the campus bookstore. They lived on a houseboat on Lake Union. He was co-author of the "Handbook of English Grammar" by Perrin and Smith.

When his health began to fail, they moved to Berkeley; he died in 1960. She returned to UC Berkeley to earn a master's degree in library science and joined the staff of Shields Library in 1966 as a cataloguer. She retired in 1976.

She volunteered with the UCD Arboretum, where she organized the library and in 1980 it was named the Norma Smith Arboretum Library. She was also involved with the Pence Gallery, Davis Art Center and The Friends of Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley, and was a life member of the UC Berkeley Alumni Association.

She lived at Covell Gardens in Davis from 1992 until her death.

She is survived by a grandniece and two grandnephews.

A memorial service is pending.

SMITH

Roland E. Smith

Roland Edward Smith, a 30-year resident of Davis, died April 9, 2000. Born at home on Aug. 22, 1927, to Clifton and Mary Smith of Central Point, Ore., he was 72.

He marriage Meryllene Marie Gebhard on March 6, 1948 in Medford, Ore.

While serving in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948, he was stationed in Korea. He graduated from Southern Oregon College in 1953 and received his master's degree from Humboldt State University in 1960.

His career as an educator included classroom teaching, elementary and junior high administration and 19 years as a consultant with the California State Department of Education.

He served as an elder at Davis Community Church and participated in many professional organizations. He enjoyed volunteer work after retirement.

Although he experienced declining health, he continued to pursue his joy of woodworking, gardening, fishing and traveling.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, family members said. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Delmar Smith of Central Point; and a sister, Dorothy Owens of Phoenix, Ore.

In addition to his wife of 52 years, Roland leaves a daughter, Linda Marie Alexander; son-in-law, John Alexander of Indio; son, Mark Roland Smith of Davis; one grandson, Casey Anthony Cagle of Chico; and a great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Rene Cagle of Chico.

Additional survivors include two brothers, Harold Smith of Phoenix, Ore., and Norman Smith of Central Point, Ore. He also leaves numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Davis Community Church, 412 C St. Private interment will be at the Davis Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Davis Community Church Memorial Fund; Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA, 95617; or to a charity of donor's choice.

SMITH

William "Bill" Bernard Smith

William "Bill" Bernard Smith, a longtime resident of Davis, died May 8, 2004, at Courtyard Health Care in Davis from natural causes. He was 78 years old.

Born on July 5, 1925, in Hartford, Conn., to Thomas and Helen Smith, he was one of seven children. After graduating from high school, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Rhineland Campaign and Central Europe Campaign. During his service, he received numerous medals and commendations, including a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster.

He worked in the automotive repair industry for more than 35 years. He was described by his family as a simple, hard-working man who enjoyed his family. He was well respected in the community of Davis and will be missed by all who knew him, his family says.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers.

He is survived by his former wife and best friend, Helen Smith of Davis; his second wife, Ann Smith of Davis; his children, Kim Hills and her husband Jeff of Vacaville, Tina Smith of Davis, and Bill Smith and his wife Kari of Fernley, Nev. He is also survived by his grandson, Jeffrey Smith of Fernley, Nev.; his two sisters, Carol and Lorraine; and his two brothers, Jimmy and Dutch.

Friends are invited to attend a graveside funeral at 11 a.m. Friday at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road. Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Chapel.
