PENGELLEY
Eric 'Ted' Pengelley
Eric "Ted" Pengelley, a Davis evolutionary biologist who was active in local arts and civics, died March 22, 2003, at Woodland Memorial Hospital after suffering a heart attack. He was 83.
He had lived in Davis since he retired from the faculty at UC Riverside in 1984, returning to the community he and his wife, Daphne, had loved since he began his academic career here 25 years earlier.
He was born Eric Trevor Vernon Pengelley on July 18, 1919, in Toronto, Canada. He spent much of his childhood on a sugar plantation in Jamaica, where his father was the engineer, and at boarding schools in England.
During World War II, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a radar technician and operator in Europe. Returning to Canada after the war, he enrolled at the University of Toronto, where he earned a diploma in institutional management, a bachelor's degree in biology and a doctorate in physiology.
In 1959, he was hired as an assistant professor at UC Davis. He spent a year on the faculty here and a year each at UC Santa Barbara and William and Mary College before joining the UC Riverside biology department in 1962.
"Ted was a remarkable man -- a highly principled and widely read scholar and humanist, and an unrelenting advocate of the power of evolutionary biology to liberate minds and spirits, " Irwin Sherman, a zoology professor emeritus at UC Riverside wrote in a tribute to his colleague. "He was also one of the most unforgettable of characters."
He studied hibernation in certain ground squirrels and showed that they have an internal biological clock that sends them into hibernation every year without cues from the environment.
At UC Riverside, he taught the introductory biology course for nonscience majors. In 1970, he began teaching a course on human reproduction and sexual behavior, and taught the course until his retirement. UC Riverside was the second campus in the UC system to offer the course after UC Davis. The course led him to write a textbook, "Sex and Human Life, " published in 1974 and 1978.
After moving back to Davis, Pengelley became a "beloved campus figure, " riding his bicycle across town to campus, delivering opinions to the Davis City Council "on a staggering array of topics" and giving lectures on the history of biological sciences until two years ago, said John Crowe, professor of molecular and cellular biology.
He collected first-edition books by and about Charles Darwin.
He and his wife, Daphne, an artist and art teacher, were active in the local arts and liked to travel to places where medical and biological history was made. Together they wrote, "A Traveler's Guide to the History of Biology and Medicine" (Trevor Hill Press, 1986).
After his wife of 42 years died of cancer in 1990, he endowed a research fellowship in her memory for graduate students at the UC Davis Center for Population Biology.
Memorial services are pending. He is survived by a daughter, Alison Hill Penfield of Ashland, Ore.; a son, David of Las Cruces, New Mexico; and a brother, Peter of Toronto.
Memorial contributions are suggested to: The Daphne and Ted Pengelley Endowment for Research in Evolutionary Biology, checks payable to UC Davis Foundation and clearly marked Pengelley Endowment. Contributions should be sent to: Director, Center for Population Biology, Division of Biological Sciences, University of California, One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA 95616.
