Aaron (Aram) Michael Zakarian
Aaron (Aram) Michael Zakarian, a 20-year resident of Davis, died Nov. 15, 2005, in his Davis home. Born Oct. 25, 1919, he was 86.
He was from Modesto, the eldest surviving son of Haig and Sirannosh Zakarian who immigrated from Armenia before the first World War.
His large family included his brother John, who died in combat in Europe during World War II; his brother Jim who died in 1955; his sister Mary who died earlier this year; and three brothers who survive him, Jack, Joe and Ben Zakarian.
Like all his brothers, he was known to most people as Zak.
He was a congenial man who liked people and made friends easily. He was also a passionate fly fisherman and a craftsman, known in Davis for the custom fishing rods he made, which he called Zak-rods.
He will be remembered for his storytelling, his generosity, and the twinkle in his eye. He could smile despite adversity, as was evident last spring when he was going for radiation treatments and other patients thanked him for being a cheerful presence.
He was educated at Modesto High School, where he was elected student body president and played varsity football and baseball, and at Modesto Junior College.
In 1938 he joined the U.S. Navy. He became a pilot in 1944, and was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1955. He was a conscientious and enthusiastic pilot who, in later years, often regaled family and friends with stories from his time in Alaska and in the Aleutian Islands, a particularly interesting period in his career.
After retiring from the Navy in 1964, he became a stockbroker at McDowall Corporation in San Francisco and Dean Witter in Modesto.
In 1985 he moved with his wife Jane to Davis to be near his elderly mother-in-law. In 1987 he served on the Yolo County Grand Jury, an assignment he took very seriously.
He enjoyed many happy days at the family's forest service cabin in the South Fork of the American River, east of Placerville, where he loved to fish. He was an active member of Fly Fishers of Davis, and before his death he donated dozens of Zak-rods to the club.
He was preceded in death by his son, John, in 1982.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jane, who belongs to a long-time Davis family. Her father, George H. Vansell, was a professor of entomology beginning in 1922, and her bother was the administrative secretary to George Hunt, head of the UC Davis veterinary school, when it began in the 1950s. He is also survived by his first wife, Arlene.
He is further survived by three daughters from his first marriage, Patricia Griffin of Stinson Beach; Christine Gould of Portland, Ore.; and Kaye Carron of Aptos; four step-children, Gerald (Jerry) Holloway of Columbia, Mo.; Carol H. Conrad of Concord; James (Jim) Holloway of Palo Alto; and Mary H. Pfeffer of Nelson, B.C.; and 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
At his request, no services are planned. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617.
