MOLE
Paul Angelo Mole
Paul Angelo Mole died Jan. 20, 2001, at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. Born March 13, 1938, to Angelo and Veronica Shumsky Mole in Jamestown, N.Y., he was 62.
After graduating from Jamestown High School in 1956, he accepted a football scholarship to the University of Illinois where he completed his bachelor of arts in physical education with college honors in 1960. He earned his master's degree in physical education in 1962 and his Ph.D. in physiology in 1969. In 1971, he completed his postdoctoral training in muscle biochemistry at Washington University, St. Louis.
He was a respected researcher, educator and author in the disciplines of exercise physiology and nutrition, with an emphasis in metabolism. He was professor and vice chairman in the exercise biology department at UC Davis. He also served as adjunct professor in the departments of physical medicine and rehabilitation and nutrition and was a member of the graduate groups in graduate physiology and the graduate group in nutrition.
Prior to joining the UCD faculty in 1977, he was a faculty member of the department of physical education at Temple University in Philadelphia, and the department of physiology at the Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans.
His primary research interest was the study of complex metabolic response of muscle during exercise. Initially, this focused on the study of specific oxidative enzymes. Later, he and his graduate students at UCD began a series of studies on the oxygen kinetics and the corollary utilization of fat in carbohydrate during exercise.
The studies began with a major reanalysis of past key published data, followed by the development of a predictive mathematical model. This led to benchmark human studies using the technology of NMR and NIRS. His findings corroborated his theoretical model and challenged the conventional interpretations of their contribution during exercise.
Applied aspects of his research further clarified the role of exercise and dieting on weight loss. He clarified the effects of the pre-exercise dietary composition on the metabolism that occurs during exercise. His research legacy has left us with a much enlightened insight into exercise metabolism.
He was an active member of the American College of Sports Medicine, American Physiological Society and New York Academy of Science. From 1999 to 2000, he was president of the Southwest Chapter, American College of Sports Medicine.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard and Angelo Jr.
He is survived by his wife, the former Patricia Peppers, whom he marriage in 1957; his daughter, Pamela Mennutti and her three children, Melissa, Michael and Jennifer of Oklahoma City; his son, Michael, and his two children, Marilyn and Joseph of Pittsburg; and his son, Gregory and wife Kristin of San Jose.
He will be remembered as a loving husband and father with strong principles and conviction. His personal pursuits centered on a love for the solitude of nature where he would fish or photograph. He had a passion for cooking, baking and sharing the results with family and friends.
In his memory, friends are invited to attend an informal gathering on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. at The University Club in Davis. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests contributions to the University of Illinois/Library Annual Fund.
