GAMPER
Robin Rowe Gamper
Robin Gamper died Oct. 6, 1999, in her home after a heroic five-year battle with breast cancer. Born on Jan. 9, 1952, in Menlo Park, California, she was 47.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 1:30 p.m., at the Davis United Methodist Church, 1620 Anderson Road, with a potluck luncheon at the church following.
A 28-year resident of Davis, she taught for 18 years in the Winters Joint Unified School District, initially teaching sixth and fifth grades. For the past 10 years, she taught third grade at Waggoner Elementary School.
An avid reader, one of Robin's greatest joys was teaching children to read. She also excelled at writing grants to provide Winters students and their families with extracurricular enrichment programs such as Saturday Science, the original third grade Star Party and Farm Day. She also served as the district's liaison to the California Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the honor society for women educators.
She attended UC Davis, where she received a bachelor's degree in Environmental Planning and Management in 1975 and her teaching credential in 1976. Robin also worked for the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service teaching desert awareness and environmental interpretation.
A gourmet cook, she loved to entertain at home with a dinner party or a wine tasting to bring neighbors together. Each winter, she would have an open house-either a Christmas cookie exchange or a New Years' Day buffet-where her home would be packed with families from 10th, 11th and D streets. Each spring, she was the mistress of ceremonies for the annual neighborhood Easter egg hunt. An entire generation of Central Davis children have grown up believing the Easter Bunny was headquartered in the Gampers' front yard. She was also active in organizing a Neighborhood Watch program. According to her neighbors, "Robin connected us with one another, making her home the heart of our neighborhood."
She is survived by her beautiful daughters, Jessica, 16, and Lesley, 10, and John, her husband of 18 years. She is also survive by her brothers, Curt and Doug Rowe of the Bay Area; sister, Nancy Richards of Bothel, Washington; step-mother, Wilma Nicholson of Belmont; and mother, Nancy Rowe of Kirkland, Washington.
