SURAN
Elsie Suran
Elsie Suran died in her El Macero home on Sept. 25, 2003. She was 83.
She was born in New York City on June 11, 1920. After graduating from high school during the Great Depression, she had to take a job to become self-supporting. Subsequently she served as chief doll designer and bookkeeper for a company she founded with her mother.
During World War II, in addition to her full-time job, she became a volunteer for the American Red Cross. Among her activities was writing to several servicemen on active duty, including Jerry Suran. Their correspondence developed into a serious relationship and their marriage in 1951. She left New York City when her husband accepted a position with General Electric in Syracuse, N.Y.
During her husband's career with GE, she helped his management work by hosting dinner meetings with employees, customers and corporate visitors. In Japan, she made friendships with the wives of managers in Japanese companies where GE business alliances were negotiated -- friendships that led to international exchanges involving not only corporate managers but their families.
When her husband served as president of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, she started and organized programs for the spouses of IEEE's board of directors, programs which typically ran parallel to board meetings: get-acquainted breakfasts, city tours and guest lectures on national and international topics.
In 1982, though it meant leaving her East Coast roots for a new adventure in California, she encouraged her husband's decision to accept a joint position as a senior lecturer in the UC Davis Graduate School of Management and in the College of Engineering. She remained an active homemaker, corresponding with and hosting home visits for friends and four generations of her family.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry Suran, of El Macero and extended family.
A memorial service was held Oct. 1. She was interred in a family plot in Rutherford, N.J.
