Richard Earl 'Pug' Burke
Richard Earl "Pug" Burke died in Sacramento, Sunday, June 20, 2004 at age 85.
Born Feb. 27, 1919 in Woodland, Mr. Burke was the son of the late Richard Sidney and Virginia Mae (Loranger) Burke of Esparto. He played baseball for the Woodland Oaks and was in Woodland Elks team at Clark Field in 1935. Mr. Burke was a World War II Marine veteran, who served in the Pacific Theater in the Marianas Islands, Ryukyu Islands and as part of the occupying force in Japan. He was honorably discharged Jan. 26, 1946 as a Private First Class and qualified as rifle expert. He was a 50-year member of the VFW Post No. 8762 of West Sacramento. He retired as the under-sheriff of Yolo County in 1976, joining the state of California Department of Justice.
Survivors include his children, Richard Edward Burke and Patricia Ann Terry; daughter-in-law, Evelyn (Howard) Burke; son-in-law, Philip A. Terry; brothers, Stephen and Barry Burke; sisters, Mary Campi and Virginia "Billie" Brackett; grandchildren, Richard and Gregory Burke and Philip J., Patrick and Jennifer Terry; great-grandchildren, Brittany and Daniel Burke and Ryan and Cameron Terry. He was preceded in death by his wife Lois Geraldine (Dowell) Burke; and brother, James Burke.
Memorials are preferred to the charity of donor’s choice.
Services: Closed casket visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, at River Cities Funeral Chapel of West Sacramento. Friends are invited to attend graveside services at 11 a.m. Friday, June 25, at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, 860 West St., Woodland.

VANDERLAAN
Pearl Dorren Vanderlaan
Pearl D. Vanderlaan died at her home in Woodland Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005 at age 88.
Mrs. Vanderlaan was born Sept. 16, 1917 in Hill City, Idaho to Henry William and Willie (Daniels) Watterson. She had been a Yolo County resident for 71 years. She worked as a bus driver for 22 years and at the Woodland Hospital as a pink lady. Previously, she worked for Contadina Foods at the processing plant in Woodland. She also volunteered her time to transport handicapped and special needs people and visiting the sick and elderly.
Survivors include Mrs. Vanderlaan's daughters, Charlotte Brown of Oregon, Ann Vanderlaan and Lynn Vanderlaan, both of Woodland; her grandchildren, Scott Irby of Woodland, Shirley Knutsen of Anacortes, Wash. and David Brown of Troutdale, Ore.; several great-grandchildren; her brother, James Watterson of Woodland and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Drewis Vanderlaan; her daughter, Shirley Irby and her parents.
The family requests memorials in Mrs. Vanderlaan's name be directed to "The Chapel, " P.O. Box 148, Troutdale, Ore., 97060; Attn. the Summer Camp Scholarship Program.
Services: A private interment ceremony for family members was held on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
VANHOOZER
Colleen Ann Vanhoozer (1st of 2 obituaries)
Colleen Ann Vanhoozer died at her home in Woodland Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2005 at age 67.
Mrs. Vanhoozer was born Nov. 17, 1937 in Woodland to Frank Erdeen and Maxine Foster Collett. She was a life-long Yolo County resident. She was a full-time mother and housekeeper. Several of her handicrafts won ribbons at the Yolo County Fair.
Survivors include Mrs. Vanhoozer's son, William Vanhoozer and his wife Lori; and her stepdaughter Jeannie Hall, all of Woodland. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Erdeen and Maxine Foster Collett and her twin brother, James Boyd Collett.
Family the requests memorials in Mrs. Vanhoozer's name be directed to the Yolo Adult Day Health Center, 20 N. Cottonwood, Woodland, 95695.
Services: A memorial service is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12 at Lincoln Gardens Rec Room, 836 West Lincoln Ave., Woodland. A graveside service at the family site in the Cottonwood Cemetery will be held at a later date. North Sacramento Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Colleen Ann Vanhoozer (2nd of 2 obituaries)
Mrs. Vanhoozer died suddenly of a heart attack in her Lincoln Gardens Home.
Born in Woodland, she was a descendant of early pioneers of the area. She was raised in Madison where she marriage and had one son, William R. Vanhoozer.
Mrs. Vanhoozer was a full-time mother and housekeeper. She had many friends at the Yolo Adult Day Health Center. She enjoyed making handicrafts, which she entered in the county fair each year, this year included. She looked forward to winning ribbons to add to her already large collection.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank Erdeen and Maxine Foster Collett and her twin brother, James Boyd Collett, who died at three days old. All are now residents of Cottonwood Cemetery near Madison.
Colleen is survived by her son and his wife, William and Lori Vanhoozer, and a stepdaughter Jeannie Hall, all of Woodland.
A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005 at the family site in the Cottonwood Cemetery. North Sacramento Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
VELASQUEZ
Ruben Hernandez Velasquez
Ruben Hernandez Velasquez died at Woodland Memorial Hospital Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at age 71.
Mr. Velasquez was born Dec. 19, 1933 in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico. He had been a Yolo County resident for 50 years. He worked as a millwright and welder for more than 30 years before retiring in 1996.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Carmen Velasquez; his daughter, Laura Velasquez and her fiancé Erik Gertz; his sons, Luis Manuel Velasquez and his wife Sarah and Ruben Velasquez Jr.; his grandchildren, Alexis Velasquez and Marc Velasquez; his sisters, Jesusa Maria Flores of Woodland, Thelma Rodriguez and Beatriz Ruiz of Monterrey, Mexico; his brother, Manfredo Ruiz of Monterrey, Mexico; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Julia Hernandez Velasquez; his sister, Julieta Casteneda; and his brother, Raphael Ruiz.
Services: A vigil is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 12 at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 13 at Woodland Cemetery. McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
VALDEZ
Alicia Reshelle Elliott Valdez
Alicia Reshelle Elliott Valdez was taken away by the angels of heaven on the morning of Nov. 7, 2002 at the age of five years in the company of family and friends.
Alicia suffered from a life long illness Rett Syndrome. Alicia was born at Woodland Memorial Hospital on the evening of Sept. 26, 1997 at 11:31 p.m. where she began her quest for life.
Alicia was a Woodland resident, she attended and completed First Step Preschool at Greengate.
Alicia is survived by her mother, Stacy Lee Elliott of Woodland. Aunt and Uncle, Sheri Maas and husband Stephen of Woodland. Godmother, Tasha Chaffin of Sacramento, her uncle Steven Elliott of Sacramento, Aunt Monica Elliot of Orangevale. Grandparents, Lois and Butch Elliott of Sacramento. Great Grandparent, Ethel Chaffin of Sacramento. Great Aunt Millie Chaffin of Sacramento. Cousins Melissa and Stephanie Picking, Bobby Maas of Woodland, Steven Elliott of Orangevale and all her close friends of the family. Other survivors include, Father, Gregory Valdez of Woodland. Paternal Grandmother, Dorie Luna of North Highlands. Great Grandfather, Eugene Wilson of Woodland. Sister, Vanessa Valdez of Sacramento. Aunts, Tina Valdez, Nikco Valdez and husband Victor of North Highlands and Bernadine Valdez of Woodland. Alicia was loved by all her family.
Visitation will be held at McNary's Chapel on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8. The funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, with interment to follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park.

VILLALVA
Carlos 'Charlie' Miguel Villalva
Carlos "Charlie" Miguel Villalva died at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004 at age 41.
Mr. Villalva was born in Pico Rivera, May 19, 1963 to Karen Luevano of Woodland and Leonard Villalva of Los Angeles. He had been a Yolo County resident for 30 years. He attended Lugenour Elementary School and Lee Junior High and had previously worked as a janitor and construction worker.
Other survivors include Mr. Villalva's stepfather Dan Luevano, his daughters, Daesha and Brittney; his sister Cherie Luevano; his brothers Johnny Villalva, Dave Luevano and his family, Tim Luevano and his family; and his half sister Connie Villalva, all of Woodland. Also surviving are his stepsisters Francis Luevano and Shirley Berghoffer and stepbrothers Dan Luevano Jr. and his family, Jack Luevano and his family and Anthony Luevano. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Ray Villalva and Elmo and Georgia Fletcher.
Services: Visitation is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5 at Woodland Cemetery. McNary's Chapel of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
