DAVIS

Clark Davis

My Dad - My parents purchased a small farm in Hungry Hollow, which is a farming area north of Esparto, at the conclusion of W.W.II. They raised three boys; two eventually graduating from Esparto High, the third, and youngest graduating from Woodland High.

During our adolescence, my dad, as busy as he was farming, always found the time necessary to assist the children of Esparto in any way that was needed. For example, when the new elementary school was built in the late 1950's, I remember my dad and a couple of other fathers constructing the basketball hoops in our shop; then my Dad taking his tractor and scraper into town to level out the playground so asphalt could be laid for the basketball courts.

In the 1960's, the town of Esparto did not have a public swimming pool. I don't remember all the details, but I do remember him organizing the community to get behind the restoration of this very large, abandoned, public pool, near Madison, called Crowder's Pool. After numerous work days of cleaning and painting, weeding, mowing the grass, flushing the pool, getting the plumbing to work and filling it full of the cleanest and coolest well water, the children and their parents of the area had a wonderful way to escape the valley's summer heat.

My dad was deeply involved and concerned about the education all students received in Esparto. For numerous years he served on the board of trustees for the Esparto School District. When it was decided to unify with the other smaller schools of the Capay Valley, a special election was held to create a new school board. My dad, so well known, respected, and trusted, received more than twice as many votes as any one else running in the election. He was made president of the Esparto Unified School District, where he served honorably until resigning in 1967.

Eventually my Dad and mother sold the farm and moved to the cool climate of the North Coast, Ft. Bragg. There he continued his farming tradition in a more 'civil' way: creating a renowned heather garden.

On Friday, December 12, 2003 my father, Clark Davis, passed away. He left his wife of almost 59 years, Edith, and three sons with many wonderful memories. He will be deeply missed.
