Jerry Poole
Jerry Poole died unexpectedly on June 18, 2000, while vacationing in San Diego. Born on April 7, 1940 in East Orange, N.J., he was 60 years old.
He was raised in Falls Church, Va. He graduated from St. Johns College High School in the Washington, D.C., area. He then went on to Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Md., where he graduated in 1962. He later received his master's degree from Golden Gate College.
Poole served in the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1983, retiring from the Air Force as a logistics officer. He was stationed in Vietnam and Panama as well as at various bases in the United States.
After his retirement from the Air Force, he embarked on a second career as a social studies teacher at Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento. He also coached basketball and football.
In 1987 he moved to Our Lady of Presentation in Sacramento where he taught eighth grade for 12 years, retiring in May of this year. He also coached basketball at St. Francis High School. He was honored as Metro League Coach of the Year in 1988, 1990 and 1992.
He was most recently honored by being included in the ``Who's Who Among American Teachers.' Teachers who are selected for this honor have been nominated by one of their students as ``the teacher who made a difference' in their students' lives. Only 5 percent of teachers nationwide are picked annually, and only 2 percent are included in one or more edition.
He has been a resident of Davis since 1977.
His pride and joy in his family was always evident. He was often seen watching his grandchildren's baseball and soccer games. He also enjoyed telling stories to his younger grandchildren. He loved going on family vacations to his favorite spot on the beach. He also enjoyed long road trips with his grandson.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jan Poole of Davis; his mother, Grace Poole of Fairfield, Conn.; his children, Maureen Poole of Davis, Suzanne Ade and her husband Chris of Davis and Jon Poole and wife Chigusa of Chula Vista. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brian Fowell, Brittanny Fowell, Christopher Poole, Sophia Poole, Eric Ade and Nate Ade. He also leaves his brothers, George Poole and his wife Mary of Fairfield, Conn., and Kevin Poole and his wife Katie of West Hills, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Poole, in August of 1989.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial mass Friday at 11 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, 200 W. 14th St. in Davis.
HARLING
Robert C. Harling
In Winters, Sept. 22, 1876, Robert C., son of M.O. and M. Harling, aged 4 years and 2 days. The remains were taken to Woodland for interment.
HARMON
Elwin Scott Harmon
Elwin Scott Harmon died at Sutter Davis Hospital Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at age 90.
Mr. Harmon was born Jan. 15, 1915 in Upper Lake to Austin and Ruby (Scott) Harmon. He graduated from Upper Lake High School in 1933 and received his bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering in 1937 from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He worked for Pan American Airways for 10 years before entering into civil service for the U.S. Air Force as a nautical engineer in the Santa Maria area for 20 years. He had been a Yolo County resident for nine years.
Survivors include Mr. Harmon's wife of 63 years, Evelyn Harmon also of Woodland; his daughters, Susan Johnson of Rio Linda and Rosemary Engebretsen of Citrus Heights; his son, Sherrick Scott Harmon of Astoria, Ore.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Verlyn Harmon and his cousin, Dean Scott.
The family requests memorials in Mr. Harmon's name be directed to The American Cancer Society, 1765 Challenge Way, Suite 115, Sacramento, 95815.
Services: Respecting the wishes of Mr. Harmon, private services for family was held Monday, May 16 in Upper Lake Cemetery in Upper Lake. Evergreen Funeral Service of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
POHL
Virginia Pohl
Virginia Pohl died after a lengthy illness on April 15, 2001, in Woodland. Born May 8, 1930, in Kansas City, Mo., she was 70 years old.
She had been a Woodland resident for the past 32 years. She obtained both her bachelor's and master's degrees in English at San Francisco State University. She taught English in the Woodland Joint Unified School District for 15 years at Woodland High School and Lee Junior High schools. She was active in the Area III Writing Project at UC Davis.
In the mid 1970s, she was a member of the group that spearheaded the effort to establish a community college in Woodland, and was recently recognized by the Yuba College board of trustees for her contribution.
She had been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary educational society, and the American Association of University Women. After retiring, she explored her interests in computers, often teaching and consulting in that area.
She is survived by her son, Nick Pohl of Woodland; daughters, Allison Johnson Pohl of Davis; Beverly Pohl of Redwood City and Dana Pohl Groome of Folsom, and their spouses. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Chloe and Tommy Groome of Folsom, and Nicholas and Brendan Pohl of Davis; her sisters, Marilyn Bryan of Modesto and Shirley Davis of Colorado Springs, Colo.
A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 515 Second St., Woodland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the donor's favorite charity or to St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
POIRIER
Lillian Evelyn Poirier
Lillian Evelyn Poirier of Davis died Monday, Jan. 3, 2005 at age 96.
Mrs. Poirier was born Oct. 29, 1908 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, She had been a Yolo County resident for 35 years. She retired from Pacific Bell Telephone Company after a 25-year career. In 1985 she was named Senior of the Year at the Davis Senior Center and also volunteered for its Travelaires Club as secretary.
Survivors include Mrs. Poirier's children, Patricia Poirier of Davis, Andrew Poirier and his wife Rose of Las Cruces, N.M., David Poirier and his wife Joyce of Coldwater, Miss.; her sister, Wilma Huyck of Rochester, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Andrew Poirier; her twin sister, Louella and nine other brothers and sisters.
The family requests that memorials in Mrs. Poirier's name be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.
Services: Interment is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7 beside her husband at Golden Gate National Cemetery, 1300 Sneath Lane in San Bruno. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8 at the Davisville Apartments community room, 1221 Kennedy Place, Davis. All are welcome. Davis Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
POLETE
Frederick Emory Polete, Jr.
Frederick Emory Polete, Jr. passed away at Woodland Memorial Hospital on March 30, 2005, at the age of 88.
Mr. Polete was born to Frederick Polete and Margaret Johnson Polete on August 1, 1916, in Fredericktown, Missouri. He was a resident of Woodland for 58 years. He retired from Contadina Foods in 1981 after working as a supervisor for 34 years.
Survivors include his wife, Marcella, of Woodland; daughters, Norma Jean Clauser and husband, Terry of Farmington, Missouri; Aline Hollinger and husband, Lawrence, of Fredericktown, Missouri, and Polly Clark and husband, Howard, of Michigan; sons, Larry Polete, Loran Polete and wife, Penny, all of Woodland; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and one sister.
In past years Fred was well known in the community for his interest and involvement in the Woodland Invitational Track and Field events. He designed and built the starting block devices used at the Woodland Invitational Track meets, and was a judge and timer in his 20-year association with the Invitational. In 1987 at the 25th annual Woodland Invitational Track Meet he was the day's honorary meet referee. He was also a state-certified track official.
Fred's enthusiasm for sports actually began at the age of 17 during the Depression as a prize fighter, and continued when, in 1961, his son, Larry, played football for Woodland High School. He loved the Friday night football games and could be seen there rain or shine. In later years, he enjoyed watching his grandsons' involvement in a variety of sports, and was their number one fan. You could count on Grandpa to be there with his video camera catching the best goals, fastest times, highest vaults, and winning hits. Other interests included golfing and fishing, and he and his wife, Marcella, entertained many guests at their home with their famous patio fish fries.
Fred attended church at the Davis Christian Assembly.
Visitation is scheduled for 6 p.m., Monday, April 4 at McNary's Chapel. A funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, April 5, at 10 a.m.
POLLOCK
Lucille F. Pollock
Lucille F. Pollock died in Woodland's Alderson Convalescent Hospital Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at age 88.
Born March 2, 1913, in Kearney, Neb., Mrs. Pollock had been a Yolo County resident for about 13 years. She was the daughter of the late Myron J. and Sophia Morris. She attended Chillicothe Business College in Missouri and moved to California in 1942. She resided in Richmond until 1989 when she relocated to Woodland. She had served as a transportation clerk at Oakland Naval Supply Center for 25 years before retiring in 1973. According family members, "she and her husband loved to travel throughout the U.S. and also made a trip to China. She enjoyed cooking, was an avid gardener, liked to play bridge, and her favorite activity was spending time with her children and grandchildren."
Mrs. Pollock was survived by her daughter, Jeanette Lenk and husband Raymond of Redding; son, Ted Ronald Pollock of Nebraska; and grandchildren, Heather Bennett Lenk and husband Robert, and Lindsay Frances Pollock, all of Woodland.
Also surviving are her sisters, Arlene Clark of Kearney, Neb., and Edna Koon of Portland, Ore.; brothers, George Morris of Kearney, Neb., and Monroe Morris of Portland, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Pollock was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Ted R. Pollock; grandson, Richard Allen Pollock; sisters, Marguerite Ayers and Loretta Morris; and brother, Myron Morris.
A graveside service is scheduled at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Rolling Hills Memorial Park, Richmond.
McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
POMEROY
Jan Pomeroy
Jan Pomeroy passed away on Nov. 13, 2004, in Martinez. A resident of Rio Vista, she was 51 years old.
Pomeroy was a retired manager for the Solano County Sheriff's Office. A memorial service will be held at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, 1850 West Texas Street in Fairfield, on Friday, Nov. 19, at 1:30 p.m. Disposition is private.
