DeRONDE

John Allen "Jack" DeRonde

Retired Solano County Court Judge John Allen "Jack" DeRonde died at his home April 8, 2003, after a brief battle with cancer.

DeRonde, 80, who devoted much of his life applying the law to peaceably resolve disputes, was a well-known and well-liked leader of Solano County's close-knit legal community.

More than a decade after retiring from the bench in 1990, DeRonde would still be warmly greeted with "Good morning, your honor" or "Hi, judge" from many of the court's employees he would see when visiting the court to handle a mediation or arbitration.

In his lifetime, DeRonde succeeded in three careers. Serving in the judiciary was DeRonde's second career. After 20 years in the military, he retired as a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force and in 1971 was appointed to serve on the Solano County justice court in Vacaville.

After moving up to the Northern Solano Municipal Court when it formed in 1973, DeRonde was first elected to the Superior Court in 1986. DeRonde's judicial career culminated in 1990 when he was named the county's presiding judge. But health problems, a bout with cancer that DeRonde successfully fought, interrupted his two-year term as presiding judge.

DeRonde's first career began when he responded to the attack on Pearl Harbor by signing up to serve in the Army Air Corps in 1942. As a second lieutenant, DeRonde was assigned to China, Burma and India before being honorably discharged as a captain.

After his first stint in the military DeRonde attended law school in New York while also working for the New York Central Railroad as a locomotive engineer and firefighter, prompting a lifetime interest in railroading.

After obtaining his law degree in 1951, DeRonde was called back to active duty and served during the Korea and Vietnam conflicts.

It was a tour of duty at Travis Air Force Base that led DeRonde and his family to establish themselves in Vacaville more than 40 years ago.

DeRonde's commitment to community service included playing a key role in the formation of the Travis Unified School District. His influence in the creation of the district prompted the school board to later name a street in his honor.

A scholarship for students entering law school will be created to honor DeRonde's memory and accomplishments. Information about the scholarship can be obtained through the Solano County Bar Association or by contacting the Fairfield law firm of DeRonde and DeRonde.

DEUPREE

Robert P. Deupree

Robert P. Deupree of Davis died in his sleep on April 16, 2004, due to complications from a stroke he suffered in 2001. He was 89 years old.

He graduated from Indianapolis' Shortridge High School in 1934 and soon after left for whatever adventures he might find in New York City. One job of interest was with a coffee company as an apprentice coffee taster, where he developed a lingering taste for coffee. He was in New York for another year before he left for Chicago to be of help to his mother.

When World War II began, he got a job with a divisions of American Airlines transporting war materiel to Europe. This job led to his joining the Air Force in 1942 as a first lieutenant navigator in B-24s. He served in the South Pacific theater until 1944, when he was injured and sent back to the States to recover. He was honorably discharged from the service with a Purple Heart on his release from the hospital.

He enrolled in Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1949. He continued his education at the University of Southern California, where he earned a master's degree in social work. This led him to a job with the California State Division of Adult Parole in 1954.

In 1960, he marriage Froydis and in 1961 his daughter, Joan, was born. He took a promotion within the Parole Department that required a move to Sacramento. In 1963 the family moved to their current residence of Davis.

In 1964, Deupree decided he had to become more active physically and began an exercise program by giving up elevators and climbing up and down nine flights of stairs in his office building morning and night. A number of his colleagues followed suit.

He loved tennis (he had a devastating first serve), hiking, biking and snowshoeing. He ran the Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco four years in a row while in his 60s.

In 1974, he retired from the Department of Corrections and enrolled in the UC Davis teaching credential program. During his student teaching experience, he decided not to pursue a teaching position of his own. Instead, he worked with his wife in her classroom for the next 11 years at Whitehead Elementary School in Woodland.

Much of his bike exercise was gained by driving to Woodland with his wife each morning and biking 12 miles back to Davis at noon. It was on one of these fateful days when he wasn't wearing a helmet that he had an accident on his bike, which changed his life forever and eventually led to his stroke.

He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend, his family said.

He is survived by his wife, Froydis of Davis; daughters, Joan Smith of Sacramento, and Laurie Gunning of Palatine, Ill.; granddaughter, Nicole Smith of Sacramento; step-grandson, Zack Hammond of Sacramento; sister, Betty Jean Huey of Bath, N.C.; sons-in-law, Bill Gunning of Palatine, Ill., and Bret Hammond of Sacramento; nieces, Anna Knowles and Cindy Hoffmann of Oberlin, Ohio, and Portia Johnson of Binghamton, N.Y; nephews, Paul and Peter Hoffmann of Oberlin, Ohio, and Adam Flint of Binghamton, N.Y.; brother-in-law Richard Hoffmann of Oberlin, Ohio; and, sisters-in-law, Gunvor Hite of Hudson, Ohio, Joan Hoffmann of Oberlin, Ohio, and Eileen Flint of Shingletown.

A private family service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in his name to the Nature Resources Defense Council, 71 Stevenson St., No. 1825, San Francisco, CA 94105.
