Margery Ellen (Nelson) Ball
Margery Ball died at Alderson Convalescent Hospital in Woodland at the age of 80.
Born October 1, 1923 in Hendriks, Minnesota, Margery was a Yolo County resident, 10 years in Winters and her last 26 years in Woodland. Margery's parents were Dr. Lewis Nelson and Hazel (Langdon) Nelson who had settled in Hendriks, MN, and established its hospital. Dr. Nelson was killed in an automobile accident in December, 1928. In 1931 Hazel Nelson and her four children moved to Tacoma, Washington.
Margery attended the University of Washington and transferred to the University of California, Berkeley, where she met her future husband Gerald Ball. Margery was marriage to Gerald Ball on June 30, 1945.
She was charitable and volunteered to aid many humanitarian causes (e.g. The Red Cross). She was also a golf enthusiast. She was Captain of the 18 hole ladies group at both Contra Costa Country Club and the Yolo Fliers Club. She served six consecutive years on the Board of Directors of the Women's Golf Association of Northern California and served as its President.
Margery Ball is survived by her husband Gerald, her son Robert, her daughter Nancy Shafa, her brother Blaine Nelson, her sister Beverly Perkins, her grandchildren Casandra, Vanessa, Merwan, Alejandro, Daniel and Amanda, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Respecting the wishes of Margery no services are scheduled. An informal gathering will be held in her honor celebrating her life from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 5th at Cracchiolo's Banquet Room Facility, 1320 E. Main Street, Woodland, CA 95776. All are invited.

BALOGH
William Duane Balogh
William Duane Balogh passed away at home in Winters with his family on April 13, 2004. Born on July 14, 1913 in Chicago, Illinois, he was 90 years old. A resident of Winters for 10 years and a former resident of Riverside and Clear Lake, Mr. Balogh graduated from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota and was a county recorder in Riverside County for 25 years before retiring in 1978. He enjoyed traveling with his wife.
He is survived by his daughter, Desta Stoner of Santa Rosa; sons and daughters-in-law Gary and Janice Balogh of Eugene, Oregon, Duane and Pam Balogh of Winters, Tracy and Sandy Balogh of Wallace, and Brad and Vana Balogh of Winters; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Elaine Katherine, and a grandson, Kevin Duane Balogh.
Memorial services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Winters on Saturday, April 17, at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.
BALUKOFF
Hilda Balukoff
Hilda Balukoff died peacefully on July 4, 2005, in her home at the Bitterroot Valley Living Center in Stevensville, Mont. She was 92.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Stevensville. The Rev. Mike Smith will officiate. A luncheon will follow at the Family Center.
Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Cloverdale Cemetery in Boise, Idaho, where she will be interred next to her husband, Peter.
She was born Sept. 16, 1912, to immigrant German parents, John and Grace Hofbauer, in Carroll, Iowa.
She was one of 12 children and grew up on a farm in Carroll. One of her favorite pastimes as a child was sneaking away to ride the work horses at day's end.
On June 20, 1933, she marriage Peter Balukoff and they and their five children made their home in Carroll until 1952, when they moved to Davis, where she was an active member of the Catholic church parish.
During her child-raising years, she became very good at the art of sewing and sewed much of the clothing for her daughters and herself.
She loved flowers and gardening. In the fall, she could be found in the kitchen canning the vegetables and fruit from the garden, or making jam.
She also very much enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.
She was a nanny to four children from two different families for many years. They were part of the family and she still received letters and cards from them updating her and their lives until her death.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Balukoff, daughter Mary, son Romayne and her 11 siblings.
She moved to the Bitterroot Valley Living Center in Stevensville in 2003.
She is survived by her daughters Donna Jacobs and her husband Ray of Polson, Mont., Jean Bush and her husband David of Stevensville, Myrna Maxwell and her husband Ralph of Boise, Idaho and Patricia Powell and her husband John of Stevensville; son, Steven Balukoff of Woodland; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She also is survived by her sister-in-law, Marie Burns of Manning, Iowa; Beverly Balukoff of Carroll, Iowa; Goldie Hofbauer of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Stella and Robert Jacobs of Davis; Josephine and Tony Balukoff of Boise, Idaho, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Whitesitt Funeral Home of Stevensville is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to Aspen Hospice, P.O. Box 686, Stevensville, MT 59870.
COOK
Darleen Cook
Darleen Cook passed away Saturday, September 16, 2000 in Sacramento. Born October 19, 1942 in San Francisco, she was 57.
Darleen graduated from Woodland High School then moved to Winters where she has lived for the past 37 years. She worked for Lorenzo's Company for 18 years.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Van Cook of Winters; daughters and son-in-laws Lauri K. Curry and Donald of Barlett, Tennessee, Stacie E. Johnson and Dennis of Winters and Beverly A. Dyer and Scott of Winters; two sons and daughter-in-laws. Kevin Cook and Bobbie of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Tracy W. Cook and Donna of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; brother, Michael Clark and wife Claudine of Woodland; eight granddaughters, two grandsons, one great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to attend funeral services on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m., at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Winters. Interment to follow at the Winters Cemetery.
Donations may be made in her name at various locations around Winters to help the family with expenses.
COOK
Harry "Van" Cook
Mr. Harry V. Cook passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2003, at Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo. Born on April 12, 1940, in Rome, Georgia, he was 62 years old.
Mr. Cook grew up in Shannon, Georgia. He joined the United States Navy in March, 1958 and served his country on the USS Hancock. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1962. It was at that time he went to work for PG&E, where he worked until his retirement in 1993. He and his family moved to Winters in 1963, where they continue to reside. He was an avid outdoorsman, but he thoroughly enjoyed reading.
He is survived by his children, Laurie Curry and her husband Donald of Bartlett, Tennessee, Kevin Cook and his wife Bobbi and Tracy Cook and his wife Donna, all of Oklahoma City Oklahoma, Stacie Johnson of Sonoma and Beverly Dyer and her husband Scott of Dixon; brother L.C. Cook; sisters Joyce Greeson, Bette Kinman, Sue Lane, Pat Bowman and Karen Wiggly, all of Georgia; 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lana "Darleen" Cook in September 2000 and a sister, Donna Marks.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Thursday, March 6, at 10 a.m. at Smith's Colonial Chapel, 14 Main Street, Winters.
Burial will follow at the Winters Cemetery.
COOK
Homer M. Cook
Homer M. Cook died at Woodland Skilled Nursing Facility Friday, June 10, 2005 at age 96.
Mr. Cook was born Sept. 27, 1908 in Plainfield to the late Homer and Ida Wurth Cook. He was a life-long resident of Yolo County. He served from 1941 to 1945 in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre. He worked at Cranston Hardware for more than 60 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 1985, American Legion Post No. 77 and served as the liaison to Boy Scout Troop No. 68, which was sponsored by the Legion. In addition he was a battalion chief of the Woodland Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include Mr. Cook's sister, Alvadine Marken of Woodland and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Loyce V. Cook; his sisters, Arlean Ichterz, Alta Hooper and Manuleita Schmidt; and his brothers, Philip, Wurth, Levis Raymond "Tiny, " Dwight and Elwyn Cook.
The family requests memorials in Mr. Cook's name be directed to the Woodland Volunteer Fire Department, the American Legion Post No. 77, VFW No. 1985 or Boy Scout Cabin for repairs, c/o Woodland Host Lions, P.O. Box 795, Woodland, 95776.
Services: A funeral is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 16 at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland. Interment will follow the service at Monument Hill Memorial Park. McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
McADOO
Alice Lucille (Mickey) Johnson McAdoo
Alice Lucille (Mickey) Johnson McAdoo died in Woodland Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at age 101.
Born April 25, 1902, Mrs. McAdoo had been a resident of Stollwood Convalescent Hospital for the past eight months.
Survivors include her son, Stan Johnson and wife Beth; granddaughter, Laurie Gagnon and husband Andy; and great-grandchildren, Jake and Casey Gagnon, all of Woodland.
Arrangements are under the direction of Neptune Society of Northern California.
Services: A celebration of her life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church, Sunnyvale.
