McELROY
Ken McElroy
Ken McElroy, 25, a post-graduate researcher at the UC Davis Clear Lake Environmental Research Center in Lakeport, apparently drowned April 28, 2001, during a recreational boating accident on Clear Lake.
McElroy was aboard a friend's 21-foot sailboat returning to Konocti Bay on the west shore of Clear Lake during a sailing regatta when he apparently lost his footing and fell into the water. The friend turned the sailboat and dove in, finding McElroy with a head wound and not breathing.
Unable to resuscitate McElroy and fearing for his own life in the cold, choppy water, the friend eventually was forced to swim to shore on his own.
A subsequent search and rescue effort Saturday by the Lake County Sheriff's Department was unsuccessful. McElroy's body had not yet been recovered as of press time today.
A resident of Kelseyville on the west shore of Clear Lake, McElroy was a member of the UCD department of wildlife, fish and conservation biology. He had worked since July at the Clear Lake Environmental Research Center, where a major research emphasis involves mercury contamination of the lake from an old mine.
Raised in Wisconsin, McElroy last year received a bachelor's degree in biology, with an emphasis in aquatic science and chemistry from the University of Wisconsin. He is survived by his parents, James and Debra McElroy of Mukwonago, Wisc.
