Albert "Beto" Medrano Hernandez
Albert "Beto" Medrano Hernandez died on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at home in his sleep at the age of 92. Albert died as a result of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He was the head of the family in the United States and was simply, a good man. Family and friends will remember Albert for tending his herbs, gardens, and nopales (cactus) and caring for his many animals over the years.
Born Aug. 7, 1911 in Rancho La Urena, Jalisco, Mexico to a family of seven, he was one of five children. At the age of seven his schooling ended and he began to work. He came to the United States in 1940 as a bracero to Colorado, Texas, Arizona and finally California. He moved to Woodland in 1948 and he worked for years as a laborer and a manager of Mr. Avila's bracero camp. He also worked for Spreckels Sugar Company, Teichert Construction and Yolo Flier's Club.
Albert is survived by his wife, Maria Torres; sons Mario Gonzales and wife Rosita; Jess Hernandez and wife Rose Conroy; Refugio Hernandez and companion Debi Eagle; daughter Juanita Garcia, all from Woodland; daughter Gloria Lopez of Vacaville; daughter-in-law Fedelia Gonzales of Sacramento; brothers Tomas H. Medrano and Benito H. Medrano of Rancho La Urena, Jalisco, Mexico; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as friends who loved and respected Albert.
Albert was preceded in death by his father Refugio Medrano; mother Apolonia Hernandez; brother Moises H. Medrano; sister Reyes H. Medrano; first wife Consuelo Hernandez; sons Paul M. Gonzales, Max Gonzales, Albert "Moose" Gonzales, Tony Hernandez and daughter Estolia Hernandez.
A rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at Kraft Bros. Chapel, 175 Second St., Woodland. A funeral service is scheduled at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at Holy Rosary Church, 301 Walnut St., Woodland, with a burial to follow at Saint Joseph Cemetery, (corner of California and West Streets) Woodland. Food and refreshments will be served at the Holy Rosary Hall (next to Holy Rosary Church.
COOLEY
James "Jim" A. Cooley (1 of 2)
James "Jim" A. Cooley died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002 while on vacation. He was 70 years old.
Born June 25, 1932, in Upland, Mr. Cooley was the son of the late Grace and Harry Cooley. He has an older sister, Jane. After his mother's early death, his father re marriage and he became the stepson of Nettie Cooley. He was a graduate of Chaffey High School, class of 1950, in Ontario. Soon after he marriage his high school sweetheart, Dolores Wallace. They celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary this summer. They moved to Davis where he received his bachelor degree in agronomy from UC Davis in 1954.
After graduating from UCD, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served from 1954 to 1956. After an honorable discharge he and his wife settled in Dixon, where he resided for 46 years until his death. He started farming in the Davis and Dixon areas with his cousin Van Smith. In 1965 he began farming on his own. Later he founded Cooley Enterprises. He was one of the first tomato growers to use a Johnson mechanical harvester. Mark and Matthew joined Cooley Enterprises as his partners. With his father's encouragement, Paul became a civil engineer. He was very involved in various civic organizations and activities. He was in the first class of the California agricultural leadership program, a past member of the Dixon School Board, a past Dixon Rotarian member, and served on the board of directors for Tri-Valley Growers for 20 years.
Mr. Cooley is survived by his sons, Mark Cooley and wife Polly who are the parents of Corinne, Kendra and Tara; Matthew and his wife Michelle who are the parents of Natalie and Seth, all of Dixon; Paul and his wife Marie who are the parents of Remington and Paris, all of Sacramento.
Also surviving is his sister Jane and husband Don Chandler of Santa Barbara.

GODWIN
Jill Ann Godwin
Jill Ann Godwin died at her home in Woodland on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at age 46.
Ms. Godwin was born Dec. 18, 1960 in Newport Beach. She had been a Yolo County resident for 10 years. She graduated from Fremont High School, attended UCSD and Chapman College and earned her Associate of Arts. She attended United Methodist Church of Woodland. She worked as a park ranger as well as other jobs.
Survivors include Ms. Godwin's sister, Jennifer Rivas and her nephew, Rudy Rivas. She was preceded in death by her mother, Janette Jean Kilius; her father, Jimmie E. Williams; and her brother, John Charles Godwin.
The family requests that memorials in Ms. Godwin's name be directed to YCCC, Yolo County Mental Health or Yolo Hospice.
Services: A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, April 3 at John Ferns Park, 750 W. Southwood Drive, Woodland. Meet near the Ashley Avenue side. North Sacramento Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
GOETTE
Carl August Goette
Carl August Goette died on Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at age 87.
Born April 1, 1916, in Woodland, Mr. Goette graduated from Woodland High School in 1934 and U.C. Berkeley in 1939, with a degree in electrical engineering. He was an honor student in Berkeley, and was involved with Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. From 1940 to 1950, he worked for Lockheed aircraft in Burbank as a wing inspector, from 1955 to 1975 he worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo as a civil engineer. He retired in 1975 and moved to Woodland.
Survivors include his daughters, Patricia Kriegl, Cynthia Jones, Karleen Gross, Carolyn Voss and Linda Dysart; sons, Kenneth Chase, John Chase and Carl Goette; 16 grandchildren; former wife and friend, Kathleen Goette; and his children spouses. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fredrick Goette Jr. and Marie Storz Goette; and siblings Erna Goette, Elsie Goette, and Fredrich Goette, III.
Arrangements are under the direction of Brusie Funeral Home of Chico.
Services: A memorial service is planned for Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, at 5:30 p.m. at the Chase resident on Cactus Avenue.
SNYDER
David Pugh Snyder
Services held today for David Pugh Snyder, 95
A graveside service will be held at College City Cemetery in College City today, Thursday, at 11 a.m. for David Pugh Snyder who died Saturday, March 2, 1991 at the age of 95.
Mr. Snyder was born in rural Woodland on August 6, 1895. He was a veteran of World War I and was a rancher for his adult life. He was a member of the Yolo County Farm Bureau, Woodland Christian Church, and Countryside Community Church in Esparto. He served as the head of the Madison Fire Department and was the secretary for a long period of time.
He is survived by six nieces, Shirley Fulton of Fresno, Dorothy Poundstone of Grimes, Marguerite Harrison of Grimes, Patricia Bradley of Berkeley, Paige Brown of Suisun, and Joan Fiddemont of Roseville; six nephews, Ernest Peterson of Walnut Creek, Gary Harold and Winston Peterson, all of Arbuckle, Dwight Peterson of Detroit, Michigan, and Theodore Peterson of Laguna Beach; and two cousins, Kenny Snyder of Winters and Gerald Snyder of Woodland.

SNYDER
Howard Glenn Snyder
Howard Glenn Snyder died peacefully in his room at University Retirement Community on Feb. 13, 2005, from complications related to Alzheimer's disease. He was 87.
Born June 22, 1917, to Judge W. Cloyd Snyder and Hallie Foster Snyder, he was raised in South Pasadena. He earned his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College in 1939 and his master's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1940. There he met Jean Elizabeth Dawson, who was studying to become a classics teacher. They were marriage in 1942.
After teaching in Paso Robles, in 1943, ineligible for the military, he set aside his teaching career to become secretary of the YMCA in Woodland, working with Woodland High students in Hi-Y and Tri-Y groups until 1945. After the war, he served as principal of high schools in Hanford, Paramount, Fowler, Chowchilla and Chico. In 1973, he left administration and went back to teaching in Chico area elementary schools before retiring in 1982. He moved to Davis in 1998.
The family would like to thank the staff at University Retirement Community for their help and support over the past few years.
He is survived by four children, Jim Snyder and Larry Snyder of Davis, Susan Snyder of Point Richmond and Glenn Snyder of El Cerrito; and two grandchildren, Maki Hasegawa of Point Richmond, and Cana Hasegawa, living in Japan.
There will be no services. The family encourages donations to Yolo Hospice.
