Lazaro Suarez Martinez
Lazaro Suarez Martinez, age 80, passed away on October 16, 2005 at Alderson Convalescent Hospital in Woodland, California. He was born on March 27, 1925 in Durango, Mexico to Lorenzo and Benita Suarez Martinez. He marriage Lupe Morales, she preceded him in death.
Mr. Martinez resided in Yolo County for the past 60 years.
He is survived by his children, Lorenzo Martinez; Jesse Martinez; Gloria Martinez; Joe Martinez and Linda Carrasco; grandchildren, Joseph; Magen; Jonathon; Jenna; Erin Ashlee; Melissa and Marcie Martinez; Mathew; Jorday and Marcus Carrasco and Nichal Doran; great-grandchild, Christain Martinez.
A rosary was held on Wednesday October 19 at St. Anthony’s Church located in Winters.
MARTINEZ
Salvador G. Martinez
Salvador G. Martinez died at Woodland Memorial Hospital on Monday, March 27, 2006 at age 84.
Mr. Martinez was born Nov. 6, 1921 in Mexico. He had been a Yolo County resident for 30 years. For 50 years, he worked as a farm laborer.
Survivors include Mr. Martinez's wife Delfina Martinez; his daughters, Rachel Martinez and Estela Macias; his sons, Sergio, Raul and Ernesto Martinez; 11 grandchildren; his sisters, Dolores and Amparo Martinez; and his brother, Benjamin Martinez. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cayetano and Antonia Martinez.
Services: A vigil is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 29 at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 30 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 301 Walnut St., Woodland. Interment will be at Monument Hill Memorial Park. McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
MARTINO
James Raymond Martino
James Raymond Martino of Chico died Sunday, November 13, 2005 at age 86.
Mr. Martino was born December 22, 1918 in Dixon. He had been a Yolo County resident for 84 years. He graduated from Dixon High School and was a technical sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a Yolo County road superintendent for 27 years. He was a member of the Elks Club, Winters Chamber of Commerce, Winters Councilman and a member of the Catholic Church.
Survivors include Mr. Martino’s wife of 63 years, Nadine Martino of Chico; his daughter, Vickie Garrison and her husband Doug of Chico; his grandchildren, Brian Carrion and his wife Brenda of Corona, Tammy Parker of Chico and Melissa Phillips and her husband Dustin of Woodland; six great-grandchildren; and his sister Mary Helms and her husband Donald of Dixon. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph Martino and Henry Martino.
The family requests memorials in Mr. Martino’s name be directed to American Diabetes Association, 2720 Gateway Oaks Drive, Suite 110, Sacramento, 95833.
A vigil was held on Thursday, November 17 at McNary’s Chapel in Woodland. A graveside service followed on Friday, November 18 at Monument Hill Memorial Park. McNary’s Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
MARZOLF
Donna Marie Marzolf
Donna Marzolf died at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento after a lengthy battle with breast cancer on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at age 69.
Born April 23, 1934, on the family farm in Soo Township, North Dakota, Mrs. Marzolf moved to Chico in 1970, and graduated from California State University Chico in 1982. Her working career included the United States Air Force, several school districts, leading her to employment at UC Davis until her retirement in 1993.
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Marzolf of Chico; sons, Bradley Marzolf of San Luis Obispo, and Curtis Marzolf of Woodland; brother, Erling and wife JoAnn Scheldrup of Portal, N.D.; sisters, Patricia Hill and husband Jim of Minneapolis, Minn., Marilyn Collier and husband Jay of Fairfield, and Carol Scheldrup of Sonoma; aunt, Ruth Groninger of Minot, N.D.; grandchildren, Joseph and Kylie Mendonca of Chico; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family requests memorials be directed to Woodland Opera House Fund; or to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, 95616, in her behalf. Arrangements are under the direction of Evergreen Funeral Services of Woodland.
Services: A memorial service is scheduled at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Woodland Presbyterian Church, 1324 Columbia Drive, Woodland.
MASKA
Stanley Walter Maska
Stanley Walter Maska died on Aug. 4, 2004, at Woodland Memorial Hospital, one month after heart surgery. He was 84.
Born April 13, 1920, in Massachusetts, he was a Davis resident for the past 45 years.
Raised in Massachusetts, he served his country in the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard.
He worked as a custodian for the Davis Joint Unified School District for many years, retiring in 1979.
He was preceded in death by his wife, June Ann Maska.
He is survived by his seven children; Richard Maska, Doreen Ann Allman, Linda Copland, Geneil Maska, Bunny Newberry, Maria Pinzon and Jennifer Maska. He also is survived by 17 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Friends are invited to attend a graveside service at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road, in Davis. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
MASON
Maureen O'Brien Mason
Maureen O'Brien Mason died Jan. 20, 2006, at her residence in El Macero surrounded by her family. She was 71.
A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Davis Community Church, with a reception immediately following the service. A private interment will be in the Davis Cemetery under the direction of Wiscombe's Davis Funeral Chapel.
Born in Dallas, Texas, on Oct. 17, 1934, to Garland Morris and Mildred O'Bannon O'Brien, she attended Duke University in 1952 and received a bachelor's degree in education in 1956.
She taught junior high school in Durham, N.C., and then in Baltimore, Md., for three years.
She marriage Dean T. Mason on June 22, 1957. They resided in Baltimore, where Dean completed his internship and medical residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. They then lived in Bethesda, Md., from 1961 to 1968 where Dean completed his fellowship in cardiovascular medicine.
They moved to El Macero in 1968 when Dean was recruited to the new UC Davis Medical School to become the founding chief of cardiology and professor of medicine. In 1983 when Dean was appointed as the medical director of the Western Heart Institute at St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco, they maintained two residences. Upon his retirement in 2000 they resided exclusively in El Macero.
Her family said she enjoyed many years traveling extensively throughout the world with her husband, principally on international medical teaching conferences. Locally she especially enjoyed her bridge clubs and serving as chairperson of the Sunset Cooking Group for the University Farm Circle.
Over the past 35 years, she volunteered her time and talents to several activities and organizations in the Davis area, including, PTA president at Pioneer Elementary, Girl Scout troop leader, Alpha Chi Omega UCD sorority house director, University Farm Circle (service award recipient), Republican Women's Association, Davis Community Church, Book Club, Stock Club and Captain of the Niner's Golf Team at El Macero Country Club.
She is survived by her daughters, Kathleen and her husband Farin Januszewski of Orinda; and Alison and her husband Charles Brooks of Perkasie, Pa. She also is survived by her grandchildren: Caitlin, 9; Mason, 3; Amanda, 10; and Ashlin, 7.
Donations may be sent in her honor to the Davis Community Church or to the American Cancer Society.
MASON
Soledad Victoria Benedetti Mason
Soledad Victoria Benedetti Mason died Oct. 14, 2004. She was 89.
Born Dec. 16, 1914, in Cartagena, Columbia, she first came to he United States in 1922 while traveling with her family to Japan, where he father was to serve as a diplomat. He decided to remain in San Francisco where she attended school as a young girl. After several years, she and her sisters moved to Los Angeles with their mother, where they lived before returning to Cartagena in 1931.
For many years she was courted long distance by Paul Allen Mason, whom she'd met while living in Los Angeles, until she returned to marry him in 1936. While he served in the Navy during World War II, she raised their two eldest children, Stephen and Gloria. Upon his return from the South Pacific, they completed their family with two more children, Paul and Soledad.
In April 1987, they celebrated 50 years of marriage with family and friends at San Francisco's Grace Cathedral, where they were marriage in 1936.
She spent many years volunteering for the PTA, the Cancer Society, St. Joseph's Hospital and the Legal Aid Society. Her great enjoyment was playing bridge with friends and neighbors in Sherman Oaks, where she and Paul lived for more than 40 years.
In 1992, a year after the death of her husband, she moved to Davis, where she cherished the closeness of many of her grandchildren. She occupied her time with classes, bridge and dominoes in the company of the many dear friends she made at the Davis Senior Center.
She is survived by her children, Stephen, Gloria, Paul and Soledad; her grandchildren, Jennifer, Elizabeth, Andrew, Matthew, Katie, Maggie, Mason, Jon-Paul and Gloria; and great grandchildren, Lily, Cameron, Emma, Chloe, Cooper, Mason, Grafton and Walker.
She is further survived by her sisters, Olga, Beatrice, Victoria and Eva.
She died as she had planned, in her own home under hospice care. Her ashes will be scattered privately by her children. Donations may be made to Yolo Hospice in Davis.
