Jessie Mae Massetti
Longtime Davis resident and banker Jessie Mae Massetti died on May 15, 2003, at Sutter Davis Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 75.
She as born June 9, 1927, to William and Lena Mae Hall in Madison, Ill. She attended schools in Oklahoma and Missouri before moving to California in 1953 with her mother and daughter. She worked for the Bank of Berkeley in Berkeley and moved to Davis in 1957.
She worked for the Bank of Davis, which was later acquired by Security Pacific Bank. She held several banking positions and retired as assistant vice president in charge of operations and consumer loans.
She continued her education in banking and earned a postgraduate certificate in commercial banking and trusts.
She served as president of the Soroptimist International of Davis for a year. She also was on the board of directors at Alpha Oaks in Sacramento for 20 years.
Her pride in her work was evident in the successful relationships she developed with her customers, her family said.
After retiring due to health issues in December of 1990, she decided to discontinue wearing formal attire and began dressing herself in matching western hats, boots and outfits.
She is survived by her daughter, Lewanne Luttrell of Davis; her brother, Johnnie Hall and his wife Betty; grandchildren Staci and Robert Murray; and three great-grandchildren, Nichele, Brittani and Robert Murray.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St. A funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Davis Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be made to Yolo Hospice, the American Cancer Society of Alpha Oaks of Sacramento.
Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
MASSEY
Earl Thomas Massey
Earl Thomas Massey died at Alderson Convalescent Hospital in Woodland Friday, Feb. 18, 2005 at age 95.
Mr. Massey was born March 21, 1909 in Lyon County, Kan. to the late James and Minnie Harrold Massey. He had been a Yolo County resident for 30 years. He worked as a laborer and later in the construction industry for 55 years. He was a member of the Woodland Senior Center.
Survivors include Mr. Massey's daughter, Deloris Wheeler of Titusville, Fla. and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Massey and his brother, Harold Massey.
The family requests memorials in Mr. Massey's name be directed to the Woodland Senior Center, 630 Lincoln Ave., Woodland, 95695 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
Services: Respecting the wishes of Mr. Massey, services will be private. Evergreen Funeral Service of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
MASSEY
Helen Bayard Blackburn Massey
A memorial service for former Davis resident Helen Bayard Blackburn Massey, 60, will be held Tuesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of St. Martin, 640 Hawthorn Lane in Davis.
Bye, as she was known to her friends, died on April 6, 2003, in Fresno. She was born on Oct. 24, 1942, to Elizabeth F. and John D. Blackburn Jr. in Van Nuys.
She attended elementary and junior high school in Healdsburg. The family moved to Davis in 1956, and she graduated from Davis High School in 1960.
She attended Sacramento City College for two years, majoring in art, and marriage Max Massey in 1963.
In the late 1960s and 1970s, she was active as a volunteer at Davis Parent Nursery School and attended the Church of St. Martin. She also took up tennis, an activity that gave her great pleasure.
Divorced in 1985, she moved to Fresno where she lived with her mother and was joined by her daughter, Ann, in 1998.
An accomplished watercolorist, she exhibited her work in Davis and Fresno.
She is survived by her mother; her son, James, of Davis, and his two children Taylor and Anthony; her daughter, Ann; her sister, Peggy MacLean of Fresno; and her brother, John, of Fresno and Idaho. Additional survivors include her former husband.
Her father and her brother, Woody, preceded her in death.
Bye made friends wherever she went and will be fondly remembered and sorely missed.
A reception following the memorial service will be held at the home of Stephen Peithman and Larry Fanning, 1100 Sycamore Lane, Davis.
MAST
Ruth Mast
Ruth Mast died in a convalescent hospital in Oroville, Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at age 101.
Born Oct. 27, 1900, in Lakeview, Minn., Mrs. Mast was longtime Esparto resident. She taught school in Minnesota prior to her marriage to Floris E. Mast on Sept. 13, 1924. She received her teaching credentials at Minnesota Normal School and a bachelor of arts degree from Sacramento State University. In 1942 she began teaching at Clover School in western Yolo County and later at Esparto Elementary School until her retirement in 1968. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star, Esparto Study Club, the Merry-Go-Round Club, and the Esparto Countryside Community Church. She loved living on her ranch for over 70 years, gardening, cooking, and having her grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit. She is lovingly remembered for her devotion to her family, friends, and former students.
Mrs. Mast and her late husband Floris have three children, Edward Mast and wife Marilyn of Esparto, Walter Mast of Oakland, and Wilma Hill and husband Jim of Oroville.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Linda Souza and husband Dennis of Woodland, Marcia Scott and husband Glen of Haines, Alaska, John Mast and wife Laura of Woodland, Alisa Stephens-Jones and husband Ray of Granite Bay, Mary Stephens-Bell of Seattle, Wash., and Martha Braaten, and husband Gary of Oroville; 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
A funeral service is scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 4, at Esparto Countryside Community Church, 26479 Grafton St., Esparto.
The family requests memorials be directed to Countryside Community Church, Esparto.

BERNA
Ruth Anabelle Berna
Ruth Anabelle Berna died in Woodland Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at age 76.
Born Jan. 15, 1927, in Hampton, Ind., Mrs. Berna had been a Yolo County resident for three years. She and her husband ran a catering service in Phoenix, Ariz., for a number of years. After retiring from the catering service, she went to work for the Revlon Company.
Survivors include her sons, Bob Berna and wife Betty of Woodland, and Richard Berna and wife Debra of Las Vegas; daughter, Lynn Barker of Chickasha, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Francis T. Berna.
The family requests memorials be directed to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, 95617. Arrangements are under the direction of Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland.
Services: A memorial service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Kraft Bros. Chapel, 175 Second St., Woodland.
BERNAL
Salvador Acosta Bernal, Jr.
Salvador Acosta Bernal Jr. died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004. at Woodland Memorial Hospital.
He is survived by his parents, Reyna and Salvador Acosta, of Woodland; paternal grandmother Anita Diaz of Woodland; maternal grandparents Consuelo Arriaga and Alberto Bernal of Michoacan, Mexico; uncles Felipe and wife Azalia Acosta, Luis and wife Carina Acosta and Roman and Isabel Bernal, all of Woodland.
His paternal grandfather Felipe Acosta preceded him in death in 1979. Interment services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004 at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Woodland. Arrangements are under the direction of Evergreen Funeral Services of Woodland.
BERNARD
Walter Allen Bernard
Walter Allen Bernard of Sacramento, born July 20, 1915. At age 90, our loving husband and father passed away on Jan. 30, 2006 of complications relating to a fall. He is survived by his loving wife Lena; his sons Michael and his life partner Karen Fleming, of Windsor, and Steven and his wife Leilani, of Valencia. Many cousins, nieces and nephews spread across the western United States and Alaska, will also miss him dearly. Born in Woodland Walter grew up and attended school there, excelling in track and graduating Woodland High in 1934. He served in the Air Force during WWII, piloting gliders over France, Italy and Germany during the Allied advance. He was wounded during his service, but was able to return to Sacramento where he met and marriage Lena. Happily marriage for 56 years, they lived and raised their sons in Sacramento, while Walter worked for Golden State Dairy, later Foremost Dairies, as a wholesale route driver. After retiring in 1980, Walter took to two of his favorite passions, working in his garden and baking, and is fondly remembered by many for his pies, cakes, cookies and candies. He was a long-time member of Fremont Presbyterian Church, where he served in various roles and contributed greatly of his time. He was also a devoted neighbor and friend to many in the River Park area. He was a tireless supporter of the Sacramento Blood Bank and a passionate contributor to Loaves and Fishes. All who had the opportunity to know and love him will miss our father. The old home will not be the same without him and his ready offer of a bite of something just out of the oven. At his request, no services will be held. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Loaves and Fishes in Sacramento.
