BORGES

Christina Borges

Christina Borges passed away at Kaiser Hospital in Sacramento on January 22, 2006; she was 78 years of age.

Born in Winters, Christina and husband moved to Carmichael in 1955. Since 1957, Christina and her husband enjoyed living on one of the last remaining self-sufficient farms in the Carmichael area. Together they raised calves, producing champion 4H cattle, raised chickens, sold pecans and fresh eggs to the community, canned every type of fruit and vegetable, and maintained nearly 75 different rose bushes that earned Christina the nickname “Rose Lady of Carmichael.”

They loved sharing their home and rural lifestyle with local elementary school class field trips. When she was able to get away, Christina and all of her family would head for the Truckee River to fish and camp and, of course, drive a little further to play the slot machines. Christina is best remembered for her smile, always putting her family first, being the best baby sitter, her fresh jam and wonderful meals. Her lifestyle example is the reason her family is where they are today.

In March of 2005 she was proceeded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Carl Vernon Borges. Also preceding her in death were her parents Alejandro and Edna Gonzales and her brothers Mac and Herman Gonzales. Missing her greatly are her children, Carl Jr. (Joyce), Don (Martha), and Debi; grandchildren Tony (Shayna), Zack (Kim), Jeff (Jenny), Julie (Greg), Randy, Jennifer and Alyssa; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Jordan, Gracie and Cody; and many more family members and friends.

Relatives living in Winters are her brother Ralph Gonzales (Linda), niece Kathy Ogando (Jim) and Carol Armstrong (Steve), brother John Gonzales (Virginia) of Woodland and an aunt Theresa Sackett.

BOSTOCK-RATCLIFF

Virginia W. Bostock-Ratcliff

Virginia Weaver Bostock-Ratcliff died peacefully on Aug. 8, 2002, at Sutter Davis Hospital after a brief illness. She was 82 and a resident of the University Retirement Community in Davis at the time of her death.

She was born on April 7, 1920, to Harry L. and Mae Pierce Weaver in Philadelphia, Pa. She attended public schools in Haddonfield, N.J., and graduated from Arcadia University (formerly Beaver College) in 1941 with a degree in elementary education. She marriage her college sweetheart, Lt. William T. Bostock Jr., in 1942.

While her husband was stationed in New Guinea during World War II, she taught elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse in rural West Virginia. Upon her husband's return in 1945, she became a homemaker and started a family, first living in Plainfield, N.J., and then Rochester, N.Y.

She and the children moved with her husband's career to New Jersey, Missouri, Minnesota, Kentucky, and Indiana, eventually retiring in Bend, Ore. In each new home, she was active in the schools, Scouts and other civic and community activities and made many friends. She kept in touch with many of them over the years.

She returned to teaching in 1968 at the elementary school level, and later became an associate director of special education programs in western Kentucky, responsible for coordinating programs for developmentally delayed and challenged children. She was later recognized by the governor of Kentucky and was bestowed the honor of "Kentucky Colonel" in appreciation for her efforts in special education in the state.

She enjoyed dancing and loved music. In fact, she and her husband Bill danced to all the big bands while in college, and often reminisced about dancing to the tunes of the Glen Miller and Tommy Dorsey orchestras. She played the piano and had a pretty voice, singing in church choirs and other venues during her lifetime.

She loved life, had an easy laugh and terrific sense of humor, enjoyed people of all ages and from all walks of life, and she was particularly fond of young children. She was much loved and will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know her. She especially appreciated the care and kindness of the staff at University Retirement Community during her last year of life.

Her sons and spouses, William Bostock of Davis, Thomas and Linda Bostock of Whitefish, Mont., and Richard and Gennie Bostock of Davis survive her. She is also survived by her stepchildren and spouses, Laurel and Herb Talabere of Columbus, Ohio, Carol and John Koble of Winchester, Ore., and Ted and Kelly Lyster of Tumalo, Ore., and by her niece, Jane Cron of Grand Junction, Colo., and nephew, Harry L. Weaver IV of Turlock.

Seven grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren also survive her.

Her husband of 41 years, Bill, and her second husband, Glenn O. Ratcliff, whom she wed in 1988, preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brother Harry; her daughter, Virginia Mary; her daughter-in-law, Maria Cortez Bostock; and her grandson, Billy Bostock.

A celebration of her life and mass of resurrection will take place in Davis at St. James Catholic Church, Friday at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made in the form of donations to the Alzheimer's Society of Northern California (800-540-3340).
