CONN
Louise K. Conn
Louise K. Conn of Davis died peacefully in her sleep at home from congestive heart failure on March 5, 2002. She was 79.
She was born on Jan. 20, 1923, in Denver to Helen and Frank Kachel. A few years later, the family moved to Downers Grove, Ill. While there, she and her younger sister were scholarship students at Avery Coonley School, a private grade school for gifted children.
Following graduation from Avery Coonley, she attended high school in Downers Grove for two years before being accepted to the new undergraduate college at the University of Chicago. The curriculum at the college consisted of four years of study in four fields of knowledge: the physical, biological and social sciences and the humanities. After graduation from the college, she spent her first summer in Mexico.
In 1946, when she volunteered for a summer work camp in North Richmond, Calif., she began a lifelong relationship with the American Friends Service Committee, the social action arm of the Religious Society of Friends. In the summer of 1948, she completed another summer work camp, though this time the location was Jamaica.
During this time, she was involved in graduate work in the Division of Social Sciences at the University of Chicago. But in the fall of 1946, she went on a student exchange program to Mexico City, where she took courses at the Workers' University to increase her knowledge of Mexican history and looked to perfect her Spanish.
She traveled widely in Mexico -- always by bus -- and often laughed about the numerous times she was asked to hold chickens and other live luggage.
In the fall of 1948, she began teaching social studies in Summit School, a private school for girls in St. Paul, Minn. After four years in St. Paul, she moved to Providence, R.I., where she taught at Lincoln School, a Quaker school for girls. In 1953, she spent 12 months with an AFSC work camp in a small village in Nayarit, Mexico, where local residents built a grade school for the children of the village.
Because of her experience with work camps, and her fondness for international living, the AFSC asked her to organize work camps in Western Europe for the next four years. This assignment took her to Paris, where she arranged permission for summer work camps with local authorities in Germany, Austria and Italy.
While selection of the American participants occurred in Philadelphia, she was responsible for meeting those participants in Paris and introducing them to their counterparts from different countries in Europe and the Middle East and coordinating their travel to the work camp site.
In 1958, she returned from Paris to join her parents in Denver and to work part-time for the AFSC as a fund-raiser. During this year, she was a regular attendee at the Mountain View Friends Meeting. In June 1959, she made a trip to California to visit old friends, and her soon-to-be husband Eric Conn. They were marriage on Oct. 17, 1959. In January 1960, the newlyweds went to Cambridge, England on a six-month sabbatical leave. That summer, as the two traveled from Copenhagen to Rome, she introduced her husband to her friends.
They returned to Davis, and Louise Conn immediately became involved in two activities close to her heart. The first was the organization, with Margaret Brooks and Grace Noda, or a Quaker Worship Group that eventually became the Davis Friends Meeting. The other was the establishment of the American Field Service Chapter in Davis.
While her first priority was the raising of her sons Michael and Kevin Conn, she joined and spent 33 years with the International Friendship Committee, which assisted the families of foreign students settle into life in Davis and cope with living in a foreign culture and language. She especially enjoyed the conversational English classes she taught, and for many years she also hosted the IFC end-of-year picnic at her home in Willowbank.
When International House was formed and assumed some of IFC's activities, she naturally became an enthusiastic supporter of that organization.
She also strongly supported many other organizations, especially those working for disarmament and nonviolent resolution of conflicts, for the well-being of children in developing countries, for peace in Central America and the Middle East and for human rights. She served as the representative from Davis Friends Meeting to the Davis Religious Community for Sanctuary for several years.
She took the docent training courses at the UCD Arboretum and at International House, and worked with both organizations until mobility problems prevented her from continuing. As her physical problems increased, she met them with patience and grace.
She is survived by her husband and sons; her niece Kristine Wollrich and her two sons; all of whom live in Davis. She is also survived by cousin Joan Wallace of Bethesda, Md.; and cousin Mark McKay of Denver. Besides these relatives, a host of friends in this country and abroad will regret her passing.
At her written request, there will be no memorial service. Those wishing to honor her memory are invited to make a contribution to the American Friends Service Committee, 65 Ninth St., San Francisco, CA 94301.
