Theresa S. Bigelow
Theresa S. Bigelow died Feb. 26, 2000. Born on July 14, 1911, she was 88.
A junior high school teacher in Oakland for many years, she was a member of a book club in Davis for several years after her retirement. She drove up Interstate 80 once a month to discuss the current book.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Horton of Davis; two sons, James of Santa Monica and Kenneth of Maryland; and six grandchildren, Michael Horton, Warren, Henry and Katharine Bigelow, and John and Andrea Bigelow.
The best memorial one could give to her would be to read a book in her memory, her family says, with bonus points if it's read with a child.
BILLINGS
Harold (Bud) Miller Billings
Harold (Bud) Billings died in his home at Cape Canaveral, Fla., Saturday, April 27, 2002 at the age of 64.
Born Sept. 26, 1937, in Aurora, Ill., he was the first child of Harold and Bernadine (Miller) Billings.
He grew up in Woodland and attended Dingle and Beamer Elementary schools. He began playing trumpet at Beamer under the tutelage of Gordon Friday. he acquired an early interest in jazz, according to family members. In high school he joined the Musicians' Union in Sacramento at the age of 14 and through high school, worked with most of the dance bands in the Sacramento area.
He graduated from Woodland High School in 1955 and graduated from Los Angeles City College.
Mr. Billings moved to Los Angeles immediately after graduation and enrolled in Los Angeles City College. He left college when he was offered the opportunity to go "on the road" with Hal McIntyre. He toured with many Big Bands, including Skinnae Ennis, Jerry Gray, Pearl Bailey and husband Louie Bellson, Harry James and Stan Kenton. He also performed or recorded with Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Nelson Riddle, Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye, the Beach Boys, Sammy Davis Jr., and others.
Mr. Billings was an accomplished trumpet player. He toured with many big bands, including Hal McIntyre, Sinnae Ennis, Jerry Gray, Pearl Bailey and husband Louie Bellson, Harry James, and Stan Kenton.
He also was with the orchestras that played the Carol Burnett TV Show and the Steve Allen Show.
Mr. Billings move to Nashville, Tenn., in 1970 to work on the Johnny Cash TV Show. He later got involved with arranging work and quit playing the trumpet. He won Clio Awards for commercials for Merchants Bank of Indianapolis and for Belk Department Stores.
In 1983 he accepted a position on the arranging faculty at Berklee College of Music, where he eventually became assistant chair for the arranging department. He also began playing again and in 1991 moved to Cape Canaveral, Fla., and did a considerable amount of arranging work for the shows at Disney World.
Mr. Billings is survived by former wife Barbara K. Billings of Cape Canaveral; daughter Laura Pleasant and husband of North Carolina; and grandson Aaron Pleasant of North Carolina.
He is also survived by sister Sandra Heidrick and husband Fred; niece Melissa Harlan and husband Blake, and their children, Eleanor, Amelia and Ethan; as well as nephew Greg Heidrick and wife Stacey, all of Woodland.
He was preceded in death by parents Harold and Bernadine Billings and nephew Steven Heidrick, all of Woodland.
As per his request there was no formal ceremony.
BILLS
Carmen Consuelo Bills
Carmen Consuelo Bills died in Kaiser Hospital in Roseville, Saturday, April 6, 2002 at age 71.
Born Sept. 26, 1930, in Mexico City, Mexico, Mrs. Bills was a Fremont resident for 32 years, and spent the last year of her life in Woodland. According to her family members, "she was a woman of great love and generosity whom also possessed many artistic talents one of which being lacework. She spent the last 12 years doing lacework and was a founding member of the Golden Gate Lace Guild."
Mrs. Bills is survived by his children, Richard Bills and wife Vanessa of Long Beach, Diana Stavenau and husband Michael of Lakeview, Ore., and Jeff Bills and wife Tammy of Woodland; and grandchildren, Nicole Stavenau, Jenna, Hannah, Emma, and Noah Bills.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Jay Bills, in 2001.

BINNS
Alice Dexter Binns
Alice Dexter Binns died on Wednesday, October 23, 2002 in Fair Oaks. Born on Sept. 9, 1911 in Winters on the Dexter Ranch she was 91 years old.
Mrs. Binns was raised and attended schools in Winters. She graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in education. She was a teacher for over 20 years. She taught at Point Arena School, Roosevelt Elementary in Salinas, and Corral de Tierra, where she retired as principal. She marriage Charles H. Binns in 1939 and the couple were marriage for 61 years until his death. Mrs. Binns was a member of Cypress Community Church in Salinas for many years. She was a resident of Salinas for over 50 years.
Mrs. Binns was preceded in death by her parents, Elmir and Ivy Dexter, her husband, Charles Harold Binns and a sister Genevieve Dexter.
Mrs. Binns is survived by her sons, Richard Binns, and wife Rosie of Reedley, Charles Binns and wife Emily of Sacramento, a sister Gwendolyn Shell and husband Horace of Davis. Grandchildren, Tisha Hankard and husband John J. of Sacramento, Billy Binns of Sacramento, Christina Gagnon and husband Jim of Fresno, and Victoria Binns of Sacramento.
Mrs. Binns is further survived by her great grandchildren Tristan Hankard, Wyatt Hankard, Jacob Binns, and Jacob Dexter Gagnon; nephew Thomas Shell and wife Karen of Lakewood, Colo., and a niece Susan Winston and husband Dr. Tom Winston of Wharton, Texas. She also leaves five grand nieces, Kay Binns and a step-granddaughter Daniela Binns.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Smith's Colonial Chapel, 14 Main St., Winters. Burial will follow at the Winters Cemetery. Remembrances may be made in her name to the Cypress Community Church, 681 Monterey-Salinas Highway, Salinas, CA, 93908.
Arrangements are under the direction of Smith's Colonial Chapel in Winters.

Edna Mae (McConnell) Bird
Edna Mae (McConnell) Bird died at her home in Woodland Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at age 81.
Mrs. Bird was born July 10, 1923 in Los Angeles to Mel and Gladys Katherine (Beam) McConnell. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include Mrs. Bird's husband of 64 years, Marlin M. Bird of Woodland; her daughter, Marlene LeClair and her husband Richard of Millbrae; her son, Raymond Bird and his wife Evelyn of Woodland; her grandchildren, Barbara Pepperling and her husband Bill of Medford, Ore., John Bird and his wife Raeana of Stockton, Steven LeClair and his wife Sherry of Roseville and Kevin LeClair and his wife Stephanie of Paso Robles; her great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Steffie and Amanda Pepperling of Medford, Ore., Joshua and Emma Bird of Stockton, Stephanie, Cassidy and Cameron of Paso Robles, Nathan and Spencer LeClair of Roseville; and her great-great-grandson, "William" of Medford, Ore.
The family requests memorials in Mrs. Bird's name be directed to the Woodland United Fellowship Senior Saints.
Services: Visitation is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, at Kraft Bros. Chapel, 175 Second St., Woodland. A funeral is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 20 at the Woodland United Fellowship Church, 240 N. West St., Woodland with Pastor Carl Morgan officiating. Interment will follow the service at Monument Hill Memorial Park. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors is assisting the family with arrangements.
BIRD
L. Wade Bird
L. Wade Bird died in the Norwood Pines Convalescent Facility in Sacramento Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002 at age 88.
Born May 18, 1913, in Willows, Mr. Bird had been a Yolo County resident for 20 years prior to moving to Solano County in 1943. He graduated from Woodland High School in 1931. He was a retired captain for the Vallejo Police Department retiring after 31 years of service. He shot on the Vallejo Police Department Pistol Team receiving many medals. He was a 54-year member of the Naval Masonic Lodge No. 87 F&AM in Vallejo, the Silverstar Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 3 as well as a member of the First Methodist Church in Vallejo. He was a member of the Retired Public Employees Association and the Vallejo Police and Fireman's Widows and Orphans Association.
Mr. Bird is survived by his wife of 63 years, Harriette Bird of Vallejo; daughter, Sherrill Anne Wheeler and husband Stephen of Sacramento and son, Steven Wade Bird and wife Carol of Saratoga; brother, Howell Bird and wife Laverl of Sacramento; brother-in-law, Dan Milligan and wife Lu of Woodland; granddaughter, Kerri Pullen and husband Scott of Elk Grove and great-granddaughter, Laura Pullen of Elk Grove; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services were held at Woodland Cemetery.
McNary's Chapel of Woodland assisted the family with arrangements.
BIRD
Laverl Lines Bird
Laverl Lines Bird died in Sacramento surrounded by her family on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at age 83.
Born March 13, 1919, a native of Woodland, Mrs. Bird graduated from Woodland High School and later graduated from the Western School of Business in Sacramento. Recently she attended her 65th high school reunion. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Sacramento. According to her family members, "she was an avid gardener and dog lover."
Mrs. Bird is survived by her husband of 63 years, Howell L. Bird; son, Terry W. Bird; sisters-in-law, Harriet Bird and Virginia Bird.; and numerous nieces; nephews; great-nieces; and great-nephews.
A private family funeral service is being scheduled.
The family requests memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society; or the charity of the donor's choice.
