BLACK

James Earl "Blackie" Black

James Earl "Blackie" Black died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Sutter Davis Hospital at age 70.

Mr. Black was born July 5, 1932, in Ohio. Before moving to Yolo County less than a year ago, he lived in Sacramento.

He worked as a janitor until retirement and enjoyed trips to Reno.

Mr. Black will be interred at Woodland Cemetery. North Sacramento Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

BLACKMORE

Dorothy Smith Blackmore

Dorothy Smith Blackmore died at Summerfield Senior Care Center in Yuba City on Jan. 9, 2006. A resident of Davis for 30 years, she was 91.

A memorial service begins at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 640 Hawthorn Lane in Davis. The Rev. Barry Beisner will officiate. Private interment is at the Davis Cemetery.

Born in Willows on Nov. 19, 1914, she received her bachelor’s degree from Chico State University, followed by a master’s degree in education at Dominican College in San Rafael and a doctorate degree from UC Berekely.

During her career, she was employed by the state Department of Education in Sacramento and worked as a professor/mentor at Fielding Institute Graduate School in Santa Barbara. She was a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Lester Blackmore, in 1978.

She is survived by her son, Bill Blackmore of Taos, N.M.; daughter, Peggy Henwood of Marysville; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

BLAIR

Paula Faye Nickell Blair

Paula Faye Nickell Blair died in her Woodland home Monday, March 4, 2002, at age 44.

Born June 14, 1957, in Ulysses, Kan., Mrs. Blair was a resident of Yolo County for 20 years. She was a homemaker all of her adult life. She was a member of the New Life Worship Center and taught Sunday School there for several years. According to her family members, "she enjoyed painting and loved to bake for her family."

Mrs. Blair is survived by her husband, Darrel Blair of Woodland; parents, L.D. and Josie Nickell of Woodland; sisters, Karen Hanan and husband Jack of Watts, Okla., Jean Nickell of Woodland and Barbara Rose of Anderson; and brothers, Lenard Nickell of Woodland and Garry Nickell and wife Roberta of Dixon.

She is also survived by her nieces, Lanna Goist and husband George of Woodland, Kristy Rose of Anderson and Lindsay Nickell of Sacramento; and nephews, Jason Nickell of Watts, Okla. and Kevin Rose of Anderson; and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Mrs. Blair was preceded in death by her brother, Phil Nickell, in 1968.

Visitation is scheduled from 8:30 to 10 a.m., Friday, March 8, at New Life Worship Center, 405 Plane Ave., Woodland. The funeral service will follow the visitation at the church at 10 a.m. Interment is scheduled at 2:30 p.m. at the Tulocay Cemetery in Napa.

McNary's Chapel of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

BLAKE

Edith M. Blake

Edith M. Blake died on Feb. 25, 2003. Born on Aug. 24, 1910, she was 92 years old.

She was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., to German immigrant parents. She marriage George Blake and moved to California, living in Los Angeles, Red Bluff and later Sacramento where she was secretary to the director of State Contractors License Board. After retirement, she moved to Rancho Yolo and spent her later years at Stollwood Convalescent Hospital in Woodland until her death.

She will be missed by all who had the good fortune of being touched by her smile, her faith and never-ending zest for life.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, George Blake.

She is survived by three children and many grandchildren. She was a member of the Eastern Star for 53 years. Her passions were sewing, cooking, writing and the San Francisco Giants.

"Goodbye to a great mother, grandmother and friend -- you will be missed, " her family says.

BLAKE

Katherine McMahan Blake

Katherine McMahan Blake died Feb. 24, 2001, at the age of 76.

Born Aug. 29, 1924, in Greenville, S.C., to Benjamin and Georgia McMahan, she attended the Bible Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Greenville High School in 1941 and attended Anderson College, earning an associate's degree in business. She worked for the Liberty Life Insurance Company and Pepsi Bottling Company. She was a member of the Junior League of Long Beach, where she volunteered for the California Dental Auxiliary. A devoted homemaker in Woodland for more than 25 years, she was involved in her community and her children's schools. She enjoyed playing golf with family and friends as a member of the Yolo Fliers Club.

She is the beloved wife of 56 years of Dr. Robert M. Blake. She is the mother of Randy Blake, of Woodland and Teri Kent of Los Gatos. She is the grandmother of Robbie and Katie Blake and Bobby and Lauren Kent. She is the mother-in-law of Terry Coelho Blake and Jack Kent. She is survived by her sister, Betty DuBose; brother-in-laws Charles DuBose, Bill Blake, Arthur Blake and Jim Blake; and sister-in-law Kathleen Knauss. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandson, John Kramer Kent.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Woodland Christian Church, 509 College St. Interment will follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park. Memorial donations can be made to the Inn Vision/Georgia Travis Center, Kramer's Corner, 66 East Rosemary St., San Jose, CA 95112. McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.

BLAKE

Robert "Bob" M. Blake

Dr. Robert "Bob" M. Blake died Dec. 22, 2003. Born in American Falls, Idaho, on Sept. 8, 1920, he was 83 years old. He graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1938, where he showcased his boxing talent by winning a coveted Golden Glove Award.

In 1939, he moved west to California to attend Santa Ana Junior College and played on the school's baseball team. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 491st Bombardment Squadron "The Ringers, " during World War II, piloting B-25 bombers during missions in the Pacific Theater. In recognition of his service, Blake was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal. While attending a USO dance in Greenville, S.C., he met Katherine Elizabeth McMahan, who became his beloved wife of 56 years.

Following his service overseas, he completed his undergraduate education at UC Berkeley and went on to earn a doctor of dental surgery at what was then the University of California Dental School in San Francisco in 1950. He practiced general dentistry in Santa Ana before moving to Woodland in 1962. Blake was the first orthodontist in Woodland and practiced there for more than 20 years. He was a lifetime member of the American Dental Association.

Actively involved in the Woodland community, he was a member of the Woodland Rotary Club for many years and served as president in 1979-80. He was an avid outdoorsman who cherished spending time with family and friends while fishing and hunting.

Perhaps Blake's favorite leisure time was spent devoted to playing and promoting the game of golf. He twice enjoyed the thrill of playing in the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am, now recognized as the AT&T Pro-Am, at Pebble Beach. A gifted leader, he served as president of the Yolo Fliers Club, president of the Northern California Golf Association in 1981, president of the Pacific Coast Golf Association and later president of the California Senior Golf Association in 1993.

He was part of the visionary team of NCGA directors who spearheaded the development of the NCGA members' course at Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach, the first golf association in the United States to embark on a program of owning its own golf course.

Blake is survived by his son Randy and daughter-in-law Terry Coelho Blake of Woodland, daughter Teri Blake Kent and son-in-law Jack Kent of Los Gatos and grandchildren Robbie and Katie Blake and Bobby and Lauren Kent. He also is survived by his brothers, Arthur and Bill Blake, and his half-sister, Kathleen Knauss.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Kathy McMahan Blake; brother, Albert "Jim" Blake; half-brother, Courtland Blake; and grandson, John Kramer Kent.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate "Dr. Bob's" life on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Yolo Fliers Club. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to the NCGA Foundation, P.O. Box 1157, Pebble Beach, CA 93953. The foundation promotes life skills and values through the game of golf to kids, with a focus on disadvantaged youths in Northern California.

BLAKEMAN Jr.

Curtis Ray "Chip" Blakeman Jr.

Curtis Ray "Chip" Blakeman Jr. died at Sutter Davis Hospital in Davis on Thursday, July 25, 2002. Mr. Blakeman was born in Fridley, Minn., on Sept. 13, 1967, to Curtis R. and Karen R. (Sands) Blakeman. He was 34 years old.

Mr. Blakeman attended schools in Wenatchee, Wash., and was a graduate of Woodland Adult High School in 2000. He had the honor of being chosen that year as an inspirational speaker at the graduation ceremonies. Mr. Blakeman was active in hockey, baseball and motorcycle racing and was a carpenter prior to 1990 when he was involved in an automobile accident that left him a quadriplegic.

Mr. Blakeman was a devoted NASCAR fan, according to his family. At the time of his death he was enrolled in a computer-aided design program with the goal of becoming a home designer.

Mr. Blakeman was a member of the Americans with Disabilities Act board and was a strong advocate of patients' rights. He had been a spokesman for Spinal Cord and Head Injury Prevention and gave many presentations to area schools. He was responsible for making improvements for disabled people at Yuba College, according to his family.

Mr. Blakeman is survived by his Canine Companion "Buddy, " his service animal and best friend who assisted him since his disability. He is also survived by his parents, Curtis and Karen Blakeman of Woodland, grandmother Dorothy Kiesow of Woodland; aunts and uncles, Dave and Sherry Sands of Wenatchee, Wash., Sherie Sands of Minneapolis, Minn., David and Ardy Blakeman and Chuck and Sharon Blakeman, Kathy and Gary Peterson of Brainerd, Minn., Mary Alice and Doug Moss of Rapid City, S.D., Sharon and Bob Richter of Springfield, Mo. He is also survived by first cousins, Shawn Herold of Woodland, Lori Imgrund of Minneapolis, Minn., Shelly Neimann of Nisswa, Minn., Steve Peterson of Brainerd, and Cheryl Pagel and Krista and Kent Blakeman of Brainerd.

Also surviving him are his "special friends, " who assisted him in coping with his disability, Eva Hurtado, Dave Ostrach of woodland, and Bill Benjamin of Woodland.

Mr. Blakeman was preceded in death by his grandparents, Edward and Alice Blakeman of Brainerd.

Friends are invited to attend a funeral service scheduled for 5 p.m., Thursday, aug. 1, at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland, with the Rev. John Evertson officiating.

McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Contributions are preferred to the following organizations: Canine Companions, Santa Rosa; SPCA, Christopher Reeve Foundation, Stanford Neuro Control Foundation or Kyle Petty Children's Foundation.
