SHERWOOD

Wanda Lou Sherwood

Wanda Lou Sherwood died on March 8, 2006, in Alamo. She was 73.

Born Dec. 22, 1932, in Altus, Okla., to Ralph and Katherine Campbell, she lived there through high school until her marriage to Randall Charles Sherwood, a farmer in the Rio Grande Valley near La Feria, Texas.

She was a homemaker for 55 years and had been a Solano County resident for the past 15 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Randall Charles Sherwood in 2003, and a son, Darrell P. Sherwood in 1993.

She is survived by her daughter, Randa Bates of Tampa, Fla.; a son, Lee Sherwood of Suisun; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Interment will be at the Rockville Cemetery in Suisun. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice in her memory.

Evergreen Funeral Service of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

SHIELDS

Elizabeth H. Shields

Elizabeth "Betty' Holling Shields died on March 3, 2000. Born on June 14, 1911, she was 88.

She was the daughter of William and Ina Holling. She was raised in Berkeley and attended the Anna Head School and Mills College. While at Whitman College in Washington, she met Kenneth Shields and they were marriage in September 1931. They lived in Petaluma, San Jose, Albany and Fresno. When the couple moved back to Berkeley, she worked for UC Extension.

In 1955, the couple moved to San Benancio Canyon in the Salinas area. Betty put her boundless love of books to use, accepting a position with the Monterey Branch Library.

She served a stint as a Bookmobile driver and retired as librarian of the Carmel Valley Branch Library, where her greatest pleasure was to instill people, especially children, with a love of reading. In 1989, she and Ken moved to Davis. When health needs arose in 1994, they moved to St. John's Retirement Village in Woodland.

She is survived by her son, Donald Shields of Concord, and his wife, Barbara; her two daughters, Patricia Walker-Sprague of Oakland and her husband, Willard Sprague; and Mary Shields Sprifke of Davis; five grandchildren, William Shields, Eileen Fields, Paul Walker, Michael Sprifke and Robert Sprifke; and nine great-grandchildren.

She adored connecting people and books throughout her life. The family suggests that memorials be directed toward local library support. A memorial service was at 11 a.m. today at Davis Community Church, Fourth and C streets, Davis.

Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

SHIELY

Dorothy J. Shiely

Dorothy Jeanne Shiely died Jan. 20, 2000, in Davis. She was 72.

She was born Nov. 28, 1927, in St. Paul, Minn., to Albert Raymond Shiely and Helene (Paulet) Shiely and was the youngest of five children.

She earned her bachelor's degree in history from the University of Minnesota in 1949 and became a flight attendant for American Airlines after graduation. In 1952 she marriage James V. Anderson Jr. in Los Angeles. She became a homemaker, and the couple had five children.

Although she lived for a few years in Texas and Washington, she spent most of her adult life in California. She was a Yolo County resident for 15 years and called Davis home.

She was interested in political issues and was active in community affairs. She had a great love for performing arts, especially music. She put special emphasis on being of service to others during the last 20 years of her life.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Amy Anderson of Austin, Texas; Ann Anderson of Santa Monica, Brian Anderson of Seattle, Ellen Anderson of Chehalis, Wash., and Tracy Anderson of Los Gatos. She is also survived by her brother, Richard Shiely of Denver, and by eight grandchildren in whom she took great delight.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brothers, Albert R. Shiely Jr. and Robert Shiely, as well as by her sister, Barbara Meier.

The members of her family wish to express their heartfelt thanks to the many people in Davis who extended themselves to assist her in her recent illness.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 640 Hawthorn Lane.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Davis Senior Citizens Center or to the University Symphony Endowment Fund, Department of Music, UC Davis.

SHIPLEY

John Harley Shipley

John Harley Shipley died Sept. 25, 2004 at the age of 56 after a three-year battle with cancer. Born April 22, 1948 in Berkeley he grew up in the San Ramon Valley. He graduated from the UC Berkeley in 1970, where he majored in physics and was very active on the swimming and water polo teams. He swam competitively into his adult life, including on the Woodland Swim Team. A lifelong football season ticket holder for the Cal Bears, he remained loyal to the athletic teams and other successes of UC Berkeley.

Mr. Shipley began his teaching career more than 30 years ago in Woodland. He taught math at Douglass Jr. High until last year when he taught at Pioneer High School. He advised the Douglass yearbook for 27 years, winning multiple national awards. He often videotaped the Woodland High School football games for the coaches. Shipley was an active member of the Woodland Education Association, serving twice as president. He served on the State Council of the California Teachers Association for several years and was a frequent delegate to the National Education Association's annual Representative Assembly.

Mr. Shipley was an active community member, serving on the Woodland Parks and Recreation commission. He was a reservist in the Woodland Police Department, winning Reserve Officer of the Year in 1982, and a longtime member of the Woodland Chamber of Commerce. An avid aviator, he served on the Yolo County Sheriff's Air Squadron. He assembled Cruise Books for two aircraft carriers for the U.S. Navy, spending several weeks on each carrier.

Preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Margaret Shipley, he is survived by his three sisters, Jean and Mary Shipley of Woodland and Ann Rego of Castro Valley; his brothers-in-law, Bob Banqué of Woodland and Roger Rego of Castro Valley; his nephews and nieces, Caryn Heath of Woodland, Steve and Cheryl Rego of Dublin, Mike and Susan (Rego) Hatler of Elk Grove, Ellen Rego of Dublin, and Ron and Erica Gibbens of Eureka; and grandnephews and grandnieces Ryan, Justin and Sierra Heath of Woodland; Makayla, Joshua, Gabriela and Nathanial Rego of Dublin and Michael, Mariah, Kayla, Brayden and Shyann Gibbens of Eureka.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30 at Calvary Baptist Church, 506 Cottonwood St. Remembrances may be sent to the John H. Shipley Memorial Scholarship, Pioneer High School, 1400 Pioneer St., Woodland, 95776; this will be one of the first scholarships provided for students of Pioneer High School.

SHIRLEY

Jewell K. Shirley

Jewell K. Shirley passed away at home in Burson, on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Born in Arkansas on April 22, 1923, she was 81 years old.

Mrs. Shirley lived at 111 Edwards Street in Winters since 1959. She was also a member of New Life Family Church since 1951.

She is survived by her sons, Quinton, Ron, Jim and Stan, all of Winters, and daughters Brenda Smith of Burson and Kathy Ralph of Elk Grove. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son Wesley in 1980, and her husband Joseph in 2003.

Funeral services for Mrs. Shirley were held on Monday, Aug. 16, 2004. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Alzheimer's Association, 530 Bercut Drive, Suite A, Sacramento, CA, 95814.

SHIRLEY

Joseph Q. Shirley

Joseph Shirley died at Sutter Davis Hospital on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at age 84. He was born on Jan. 25, 1919 in Ellsworth, Arkansas to Elijah Henry and Ava Harriet Shirley.

Joseph marriage Jewell Kinis Hutson on Aug. 2, 1941 in Paris, Arkansas. In that same year, he joined the United States Army and served in World War II in the Pacific Theater as an Infantry medic. He earned the Purple Heart and later received an honorable discharge in 1944.

Joseph moved his family to California in 1945 and later moved to Winters, where they resided for the last 54 years. Prior to moving to Winters, he worked in the dairy business in Dixon for several years, then joined the carpenter's union and retired in 1983 after 25 years.

While residing in Winters, Joseph served faithfully as a member of New Life Family church and was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Joseph is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jewell Kinis Shirley; six children Quinton Lee Shirley, Ronald Wayne Shirley and James Marion Shirley, all of Winters; Brenda Carolyn Smith of Burson, Ida Kathleen Ralph of Elk Grove and Joseph Stanley Shirley of Lucerne. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his son Wesley Howard Shirley.

A funeral service was held at New Life Family Church on Saturday, Feb. 22, followed by a private service at the Winters Cemetery.

SHMARAK

Yetta Shmarak

Yetta Shmarak of Folsom died on March 16, 2002, at Folsom Convalescent Hospital. She was 93.

She was born on May 26, 1908, in Brooklyn. She lived in Davis from 1974 to 1989, and found the people and activities of the community to be the joy of her golden years.

During her time in Davis, she volunteered at the UC Davis Medical Center's gift shop in Sacramento, and at the gift shop at the Jewish Fellowship in Davis, which is now known as the Congregation Bet Haverim Jewish Fellowship of Davis.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Sidney Shmarak, who died in 1973.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur and Sandra Shmarak of Folsom, and Dr. Kenneth and Suzanne Shmarak of West Bloomfield, Mich.; four grandchildren, Stacey Young of Folsom, Corey Shmarak of Encino, Marci Ben Moche of West Bloomfield and Michael Shmarak of Chicago; and four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Brandon Young of Folsom and Erin and Adam Ben Moche of West Bloomfield.

Interment was in Michigan, beside her beloved husband.

Remembrances may be made to the Jewish Family Services of Sacramento, 1333 Howe Ave., Suite 100, Sacramento, CA 95825.
