RODNING
Carol Janice Rodning
Carol Janice Rodning died in Davis on Jan. 27, 2005, at age 56.
Friends are invited to a memorial service for her at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 640 Hawthorn Lane in Davis.
Born in and raised near Minneapolis, she earned a bachelor of arts degree from Gustavus Adolphus College, a master's degree from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in human development from UCLA. After spending several years in education and on the faculty at UCLA, she joined the UC Davis faculty in 1992 in the department of human and community development.
In addition to her teaching and research responsibilities at UCD, she filled the position of director of the Center for Child and Family Studies. She believed that the CCFS was her greatest professional achievement at UCD.
She had joined the faculty with a strong research and teaching background and while she received high praise as an instructor, it was not achieved at the expense of intellectual challenge or scholarly rigor. She had a gift for bringing people together in ways that led to fruitful collaborations and thus, under her leadership, the CCFS became an innovative model for interdisciplinary and collaborative research with a strong theoretical foundation in the area of parent-child attachment. It also gained a reputation for its successful integration of academic research, teaching and community outreach.
She innovated throughout her tenure as the director of CCFS. Among her other achievements, she was a major contributor to the establishment of CCFS programs designed to facilitate the sensory-motor development of infants and toddlers and the mainstreaming of special needs children. She authored a grant and received funding to develop a behavioral science computer laboratory at the center. She also was an intellectual leader who promoted the establishment of a separate university institution designed to provide children and their parents a safe and neutral place to develop healthy and secure relationships. Her vision became a reality on May 12, when with the support and effort of Donis and Erwin Eichhorn, the University Family House was opened near the CCFS.
Outside of her professional and academic achievements, she was an active member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Davis and served as a lay Eucharistic minister. She also was a gifted quilter and enjoyed creating quilts for her family and friends. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend, and will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her children, Kari Munro and her husband Devon Munro of Fincastle, Va.; Annelise Lucas and her husband Donald of Charlottesville, Va.; Paul Otteson of Northfield, Minn.; her father, Selmer Rodning, and his wife, Inez Rodning, both of Sun City, Ariz.; her sister, Carla Rodning of Davis; her brother, Charles Rodning and his wife Mary, both of Semmes, Ala.; and her grandchildren -- Dane Chandler, Logan Lucas and Jorun Lucas.
She wished that any donations offered in her memory be made to St. Martin's Episcopal Church or to Yolo Hospice in Davis.
