STICKEL

Robert Andrew Stickel

Robert Andrew Stickel died peacefully in his Knights Landing home Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at age 86.

Born June 13, 1915, in Arkansas, Kansas, Mr. Stickel had been a Yolo County resident for 23 years. He was the son of the late Henry F. and Nola (Wright) Stickel. He had joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at Stillwater, Okla. and was one of 230 million young Americans, ages 17 to 23, who were called to help build their country during the great depression.

He served with the CCC not only at Stillwater, Okla., but also served at Gillette, Wyo., Mammoth Lake, Lone Pine and Death Valley. Coming north to Yuba and Yolo counties, he continued to care for and live by the land, becoming a farmer and working for the Williamson family farms of Fair Oaks, William Payne farms of Zamora for 13 years, Sullivan Farms of Yuba City and for several years at Suisun Gold Farms and Ralph White Farms.

Mr. Stickel is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jewell A. (Lynch) Stickel; children, Evelyn V. McNeill of Elverta, Louise Martinez and husband Carl of Woodland, Robert F. and Lorraine Stickel of Yuba City, and David and Mickey Stickel of Soledad; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Ethel Stone and Beryl Brenner; brother, Winton Stickel; and great-granddaughters, Cassie Martinez and Sarah Louise McNeill-Younger.

Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at Kraft Bros. Chapel, 175 Second St., Woodland.

A funeral service is scheduled at 1 p.m. today, Feb. 25, at Church of the Nazarene, 100 Woodland Ave., Woodland, with Pastor Bob Hargrave officiating. Interment will follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park, Woodland.

The family requests memorials be directed to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, 95617-1014, in his behalf.

Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

STILES

Harriette L. Stiles

Harriette L. Stiles died April 8, 2001, after a lengthy illness. Born Nov. 12, 1912, in Bonanza, Ore., she was 88.

She moved to Northern California at an early age and graduated from Sacramento High in 1929. Upon her marriage to Gene Stiles in 1935, she moved to Davis, where she raised her family, was involved in scouting and PTA and, along with her husband, was active in many Masonic orders. She served as matron and deputy grand matron for Ionia Chapter of Order of the Easter Star and with Rainbow Girls. In the 1950s, she was the court clerk for Davis Municipal Justice Court and later retired from the registrar's office at UC Davis.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Eugene W. Stiles Sr.; son, Eugene W. Stiles Jr.; and six siblings.

She is survived by a sister, Margaret Ricketts of Las Vegas; daughter Sharon Dehorty of Davis; daughter Judith Wight and husband, Steve of Eagan, Minn.; daughter-in-law Nancy Stiles of Davis; grandchildren Brian and wife Joan of Davis; Jennifer Dehorty of McDonough, Ga.; David Stiles and wife Debbie of Davis; Joseph and wife Diane Larzelere-Dehorty of Sacramento; and five great-grandchildren.

A family memorial will be on a later date. Remembrances may be sent to the Shriner's Hospital for Children of Sacramento, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817 or the Alzheimer's Aid Society, P.O. Box 8124, Sacramento, CA 95812. Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Chapel.

STILES

Tressie Aleene Stiles

Tressie Aleene Stiles passed away at her daughter’s home in Capay, on May 21, 2000, one day before her 87th birthday.

Born May 22, 1913, in Talihina, Oklahoma to the late Auzzie Lee and Nellie Ellen (Stover) Stone, she was a Yolo County resident for 54 years.

In addition to being a homemaker all her adult life, she worked outside the home at various jobs. She worked for Voultee Aircraft in Southern California during World War II assembling airplanes. Prior to her retirement she was employed as a seamstress for Yolo General Hospital.

Mrs. Stiles is survived by her sons, A. L. Stiles and wife Verga, and Dale Stiles and wife Esther, all of Woodland, and Jerry Stiles and wife Cynthia of Capay; daughters Nancy Shaw and Loretta Clark of Capay; brother Paul Stone of Louisiana and sister Ann Stone of Southern California; 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Stiles was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Homer Lee Stiles in 1987, and daughters Bertha Ann Ayon in 1975 and Barbara Martin-Williver in 1991.

Visitation was scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24 at Kraft Bros. Chapel, 175 Second Street, in Woodland.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 25, 2000, also at Kraft Bros. Chapel with interment to follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park.

The family suggests that donations be made to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617 in Mrs. Stiles’ memory.

Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland assisted the family with arrangements.

STILL

Edwin Clifford Still

Edwin Clifford Still passed away Friday, Oct. 15, 2004 in Woodland at age 85.

Mr. Still was born Oct. 3, 1919 in Steamboat Springs, Colo. and was a Yolo County resident for 69 years. He was a 1939 graduate of Woodland High School, a graduate of diesel mechanic school in 1950 and was an Army veteran. He was employed at Spreckles Sugar Company for 28 years and later self-employed for Soda Vending Machine. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Toastmasters Club of Woodland and the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include Mr. Still's foster son, Dick Giles of Pismo Beach; his sister Edith M. Pierce of Sacramento, his nieces, Norma Russe of Folsom; Jean E. Hamilton of Georgetown and Margaret A. Palacios of Ukiah; his nephews Jack E. and Charles Pierce, both of Sacramento; and many of their children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Still; his foster son Albert Muse; his parents, E.C. and Edith H. McMullen Still and his niece, Katherine Pierce.

Donations in Mr. Still's name may be directed to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, 95817.

Services: A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 515 Second St., Woodland. Cremains will be placed in St. Luke's Memorial Garden. McNary's Chapel of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

STILLE

Gladys Bell Stille (1st obituary of 2)

Gladys Stille died in her Woodland home Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at age of 97.

Born Jan. 21, 1906, in Bishop, Mrs. Stille had been a Yolo County resident for 76 years. She graduated from Heald's Business College in Los Angeles. In 1927 she and her family moved to Woodland where she became the bookkeeper for The Mail of Woodland, a local newspaper. She worked at Nugget Market as a checker and bookkeeper, beginning in 1935 for more than 50 years. She was also co-owner of Idle Wheel Mobile Home Park, where she served as manager and bookkeeper. She was a past matron of Woodland's Order of the Eastern Star, treasurer of Christian Women's Club, and a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Gene Stille and wife Joan; grandchildren, Gene Noel Stille and wife Kelly, Greg Stille and wife Susy, Anne Bethe Engstrom and husband Mark, and Eric Stille and wife Kate; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Other survivors are her brothers, Robert Bell and wife Arlene, Russell Bell and wife Margaret, and sister-in-law, Helen Bell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mack Stille, in 1989; and brother, Leland Bell.

The family requests memorials be directed to: First Baptist Church in Woodland; or to the donor's favorite charity. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors is assisting the family with arrangements.

Services: A funeral service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Monday, July 7, at First Baptist Church, 1616 West St., Woodland, with Pastor Mel Beals officiating, and with interment immediately following, in Woodland Cemetery.

Gladys Stille (2nd obituary of 2)

Gladys Stille passed away peacefully in her home on July 1, 2003, at the age of 97.

Born on January 21, 1906 to Joseph and Elizabeth Bell in Bishop, California, Gladys was one of four children.

She graduated from Heald's Business College in Los Angeles and returned to work in Bishop.

In 1927 she and her family moved to Woodland where she became the bookkeeper for The Mail of Woodland, a local newspaper.

Gladys met her husband, Mack Stille, a struggling entrepreneur and founder of the Nugget Markets, at the Woodland Methodist Church.

Mack and Gladys were marriage on December 31, 1928.

Their only child, Gene, was born November 11, 1929, just after the stock market crashed.

These were difficult times. Gladys returned to work at the Nugget Market in 1935, where she worked as a checker and bookkeeper for more than 50 years.

It is doubtful that the Nugget Market would have survived without the contributions of Gladys.

Gladys and Mack also built and developed the Idle Wheel Mobile Home Park, Woodland's first four-star mobile home park.

Gladys moved her bookkeeping facilities to Idle Wheel and for years performed the dual job of park manager and bookkeeper, as well as her bookkeeping position with the Nugget.

Gladys was dedicated to her family's businesses and worked hard to ensure their success.

She worked well past the time most people assume retirement status and thoroughly enjoyed her work.

Gladys was also dedicated to her church and community.

She was a past Matron of Woodland's Order of the Eastern Star and Treasurer of the Christian Women's Club.

She was an active member of the First Baptist Church for many years.

Gladys is survived by her son, Gene Stille and his wife Joan; her four grandchildren, Gene Noel Stille, Greg Stille, Anne Bethe Engstrom and Eric Stille, and their spouses, Kelly Stille, Susy Stille, Mark Engstrom and Kate Stille.

Gladys also leaves behind 16 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren.

Gladys is also survived by her two brothers and their spouses, Robert and Arlene Bell, Russell and Margaret Bell, and sister-in-law, Helen Bell.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Mack Stille, in 1989 and her brother, Leland Bell.

Gladys will be greatly missed by her family and many lifelong friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church in Woodland or to the donor's favorite charity.

Services are scheduled for Monday, July 7th at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 1616 West Street, in Woodland. Pastor Mel Beals will be officiating.

Interment at Woodland Cemetery, will immediately follow the service.

Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
