STILLINGER

Mary Larick Stillinger

Mary Larick Stillinger died Feb. 26, 2005, at the University Retirement Community in Davis, where she had lived for more than five years. She was 94.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on Aug. 9, 1910, she was educated there, graduating from Baldwin-Wallace College. She then taught science in the Cleveland public schools, where her husband also was a teacher and administrator.

In 2000, she moved with her husband from Cleveland to Davis to be near their two daughters and their families.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, John Jay Stillinger, who died in 2001.

She is survived by her daughter Janet Cross and her husband Carroll of Davis; and her daughter Molly Pikkarainen and her husband George of Fairfax.

She is further survived by her four grandchildren, Paul Cross of Newport Beach, John Cross of Irvine, Gwen Pikkarainen of Novato and Kate Pikkarainen of Sacramento.

The family wishes to thank her caring friends and staff at the University Retirement Community.

A private family service will be held.

STINE

Darren Edward Stine

Darren Edward Stine died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in his Davis home from cardiac arrest. He was 44.

Born Jan. 20, 1960, in Ft. Worth, Texas, he had a strong interest in photography, loved to play golf and was fascinated by airplanes, cars and motorcycles.

He spent his working career in sales, specializing in residential door and builders' hardware businesses, recently with Hibbert Lumber in Davis. He had many friends among the local Davis contractors.

He is survived by his two children, Matthew and Katy Stine of Vacaville; his parents, Betty and Dick Stine of Davis; brother Dan Stine of Zhongshan, China; five sisters, Mary Betancourt of Stockton, Linda Winter of Harrisburg, Ore., Karen Starr of Layton, Utah, Tracy Fletes of Woodland, Robyn Smith of Citrus Heights; and numerous nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will begin at 5 p.m. today, in the clubhouse at the Rancho Yolo Mobile home park in Davis. Davis Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

STITT

Leonard C. Stitt

Leonard C. Stitt of Davis died on Dec. 17, 1999. Born on Feb. 16, 1907, to Joseph and Clara Stitt, he was 92.

He was raised on his parents' ranch outside of Chowchilla. Upon graduating from high school in Chowchilla, he attended and graduated with honors from UC Davis, where he pitched baseball for UC Davis. He received the University of California Award in 1926.

While attending UCD, he met and later marriage Florence J. McCully. There were together for 64 years.

Stitt worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 45 years. He was a longtime member of the Moose Lodge 2260 in Davis, and also was a Davis volunteer firefighter.

Stitt was an avid baseball fan and an outdoorsman. Since 1926, he only missed one year of deer hunting in Northern California, southern Oregon and northwestern Nevada. Last October he went on his last deer hunting trip with Vern Williams of Modesto; Al Fronsdahl of Sparks, Nev.; Harold McCoy of Castro Valley; Dennis Cowles of Omaha, Neb.; and Scott McCoy of Pendleton, Ore.; all of whom he referred to as his ``boys.'

He was preceded in death by his wife Florence, a sister and two brothers. He is survived by his ``boys' and many very special friends.

He will be cremated and buried icon next to his wife in the Davis Cemetery. There will be a memorial service in late January for which a notice will appear in The Enterprise.

A memorial service for Leonard C. Stitt will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, 207 D St. in downtown Davis. Stitt died Dec. 17, 1999, at the age of 92.

GORDON

Vendla (Johnson) Gordon

Vendla (Johnson) Gordon 92, died on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003 surrounded by her loving family at Woodland Memorial Hospital.

Born in Logan, Utah July 29, 1911. Her parents were Fredrick and Clara (Jensen) Johnson. She was the middle child of a family of 12 siblings all who have preceded her death; brothers Daniel, Woodrow, Raymond, Arthur, Elden and Golden Johnson and sisters; Clara M. Connary, Sylvia Brown, Thelma Olson, Della Hughart and Katie Yost.

She moved to Woodland in 1937 with her husband Kenneth Foster Gordon. While raising eight children she worked at Safeway, Contadina Cannery and Spreckels Sugar Company. She owned and operated Gordon's Fiber Flower Shop for 50 years in the front room of their home. She was a member of Woodland Soroptimist Club and Chamber of Commerce. While supporting her husband in all his scouting positions, she became President of the Boy Scout Mother's Club. She put on many dinners to raise money for the scout troops in Woodland. She was also an honorary member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority since 1956. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served on a stake mission with her late husband, where they brought the gospel to many. Everyone who knew her loved her dearly and called her "Grandma."

Mrs. Gordon was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Kenneth Foster Gordon; three sons, Rex Donald Gordon, Keven John Gordon and Dennis Lee Gordon; and her son-in-law Dale Glenn Warren.

Vendla is survived by her three sons, Kenneth Verl Gordon and wife Alice, Freddie J Gordon and wife Ruby all of Woodland, and Kerry Foster Gordon and wife Mikel of Fair Oaks; two daughters, Gloria Joy Warren and Mary Ann Robinson and husband David all of Woodland; daughter-in-law Irene Gordon of Florida and sister-in-law June Gordon of Brigham City, Utah; 25 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation and funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 24, 2003 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 850 Pioneer Avenue. Visitation will be from 12 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. with the funeral services at 1 p.m. Interment will follow immediately at the Woodland Cemetery on West Street.

In lieu of floral contributions the family requests donations be made to charity of donor's choice.

Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

GORMAN

Bernie C. Gorman, Jr.

Bernie Gorman Jr. passed away at his home Friday, Jan. 28, 2005. Bernie was born Aug. 8, 1938 and raised in Yolo where he spent his entire life in the agriculture and trucking business.

Bernie is survived by his wife Deborah; mother, Vera Gorman; sons, Daniel Gorman, Craig Gorman and his wife Michele; Wayne Barrios and his wife Amy; daughter, Eileen Gorman; sisters, Carol Gorman and her husband John Davis; and Susan Gorman Finnin; grandchildren Malissa, Stephanie, Ryan, Jack and Hunter.

Bernie was preceded in death by his father, Bernie Gorman Sr. and his brother, John Gorman.

At Bernie's request, there will be no public burial. There will be a celebration of his extraordinary life Friday, Feb. 4 at 11 a.m. at the Heidrick Ag History Museum in Woodland.

The family requests donations are directed to the Tyson Miller Scholarship Fund, Woodland Christian School, 1616 West St., Woodland, 95695; or the Heidrick Ag History Museum, 1962 Hays Lane, Woodland, 95776 or to the charity of your choice.

GORMAN

Margaret "Peggy" Frances Laird Gorman

Margaret "Peggy" Frances Laird Gorman died at her home in Woodland, Monday, Dec. 6, 2004 at age 80.

Mrs. Gorman was born Jan. 15, 1924 in Leavenworth, Kan. She had been a Yolo County resident for 33 years. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, serving as a visitor to the sick and as a lay minister. She was also a volunteer visitor at the Juvenile Detention Center and a member of a local book club.

Survivors include Mrs. Gorman's daughters, Peggy Petsick and her husband Dave and Betty Laber and her husband Harold, all of Woodland; her son, Jay Gorman and his wife Nadine of Garden Valley; her grandchildren, Christine Marken and David Petsick and Jessica Laber, all of Woodland, Julie Stuart of Sacramento, Debbie Sinclair of Simi Valley, Pam Orozco of San Luis Obispo and Ron Gorman of Denver; 18 great-grandchildren; her brother, Richard Laird and his wife FloJean of Kansas City, Mo. and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Patrick Gorman; her parents, Abe and Mary Laird and her sister, Mary Kay Keane.

The family requests memorials in Mrs. Gorman's name be directed to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, 95617.

Services: A vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9 at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland. A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 301 Walnut St., Woodland. Interment will follow the Mass at Monument Hill Memorial Park. McNary's Chapel of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

GORMAN

Sister Maria Ave (Catherine Patricia Gorman) CSC

Sister Maria Ave (Catherine Patricia Gorman) CSC died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at age 86.

Born Jan. 8, 1915, in San Francisco, to the late John F. Gorman and Alice McManus Gorman. Sister Maria Ave and her sister Elnora were raised in Yolo County. She spent 54 years as an elementary teacher and all of those years were in the West: Utah, California, Idaho and Arizona. She taught mathematics in the middle grades and then, in 1974, was a tutor in Stella Maris School, La Jolla. Following her teaching career, Sister Maria Ave was active in pastoral ministry to the elderly in Utah and California. In 1991, she retired to Saint Cathedral by the Sea and in 1999 came to Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, Indiana. Sister Maria Ave was active in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.

Sister Maria Ave is survived by her nieces, Susan Torguson of Davis and Nancy Scann of Danville; nephew, Charles E. Daily of Granite Bay; and numerous great-nieces; great-nephews; and cousins.

A reception and wake was held Thursday, Jan. 10, at Church of Loretto, Saint Mary's Notre Dame, Ind.

Sister Maria Ave was preceded in death by her sisters, Bernice Gravelle of Chico and Elnora Daily of Woodland.

A funeral service was conducted Friday, Jan. 11, also at Church of Loretto, Saint Mary's Notre Dame, Ind.

The family requests memorials be directed to Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind., 46556.

Kanieweski Funeral Home of South Bend, Ind., assisted the family with arrangements.
