Edward Chester Maxie, Jr.
Edward Chester Maxie, Jr., a Davis resident of 55 years, died of a heart attack on July 7, 2005. He was 60.
He was born on Oct. 5, 1944, in Laurel, Miss., to Sarah Elizabeth and Edward Chester Maxie Sr.
He worked for Longs Drugs in Davis for almost 30 years. The past two years, he had worked for the Davis Food Co-op.
A "wonderful man with a huge heart," according to loved ones, he "loved his family more than life." In particular he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his beloved yellow Labradors, Spike and, later, Spike II, as well as having get-togethers.
He is preceded in death by his brother, John David.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Vivian; daughters Chrisi Jones and her husband Terry and Shelley McIntosh and her husband Scott, both of Sacramento; brothers Robert Maxie of Sacramento and Tom Maxie and his wife Debbie Maxie of Vancouver, B.C.; grandchildren Jacob and Emilee Jones, Michael and Samantha Hansen, and Cory and Ashlee McIntosh; and father-in-law Don Swisher.
A celebration of his life will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Veterans' Memorial Center, 203 E. 14th St.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to his favorite nonprofit organization, the Mills Little League, P.O. Box 324, Rancho Cordova, CA 95670.
Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
MAXWELL
Alice T. Maxwell
Alice T. Maxwell died Dec. 9, 2004. She was 88.
A funeral service will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1149 East Alluvial Ave. in Fresno.
Born Nov. 5, 1916, she was a graduate of Utah State University with a degree in education. She taught elementary school for 33 years in the Western states. She also received a bachelor's degree in education from Chico State University.
After completing her teaching career in Santa Barbara, she then spent her time raising her children and supporting her husband as he worked in the California Agriculture Services.
For the past 30 years, she was a resident of Davis, and in the last six months, resided in Fresno.
She was preceded in death by her son, Marvin Maxwell.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Lin Maxwell; her daughter, Mary Lin Pitalo of Davis; and her son, Dr. Andrew Maxwell of Fresno.
She is further survived by her grandchildren, Michael Pitalo and Kimberly Wiechmann of Clovis, Michele Beary of San Diego, Sally McComas of Santa Rosa, Robert Maxwell and Alison Dent of Camden, S.C., Kent Maxwell, Stephanie Maxwell and Susan Turner, all of Fresno, Leah Maxwell of Salt Lake City and James Maxwell of Fresno; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Cynthia A. May
Cynthia Ann May died July 28, 2001, at her home in El Macero. Born on April 27, 1956, in Castro Valley, she was 45 years old.
She was a Job's Daughter Honor Queen and was the valedictorian at her vocational school. She loved her job as a health unit coordinator at the UC Davis Medical Center, and loved her family, holidays, baking and decorating. Her infectious smile and laugh will be missed. She was a loving wife, mother and friend to all who knew her, and her insight, wisdom and feeling for people was a source of strength to many.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Lenore Canaday.
She is survived by her husband, Jeffrey L. May of El Macero; her son, Michael J. Elfers of Sacramento; her daughter, Jennifer L. May of Davis; her father, Truman James and his wife Jane Canaday of Fresno; her brothers and their wives, Steven A. and Cindy Canaday and Richard G. and Terri Canaday, all of Sacramento; her mother-in-law, Carol May-Hickman and her husband George of Davis; her aunt, Lorna Nowicki and her husband Stanley of Marina; her nieces, Deedra Withers and Christina Canaday; and her nephew, Tyler Canaday.
Friends are invited to a celebration of her life Friday at 11 a.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church, 625 Florin Road in Sacramento.

Jack I. May
A memorial service to honor the life of Jack Irvin May, who died June 1, 2000, will be held Saturday at the Davis Senior Center, 646 A St.
Born June 14, 1916, in Stockton, he was 83 years old.
When he was born, he held the record as the largest baby in the state, at 14 pounds, 7 ounces. The record may still stand today, May's family says.
He lived in San Leandro from 1917 to 1929 and in Davis from 1929 to 1934. Before graduation, May joined the U.S. Navy Reserves and on Jan. 2, 1941, was activated into the Navy to train pilots. From there, May went overseas to Hawaii from early 1944 to September 1945.
In 1955, he returned to Davis with his wife Ruth and family. He joined the UC Davis physics department for five years, then transferred to agricultural engineering, where he worked until his retirement on Oct. 1, 1980.
During his tenure in agricultural engineering, May was instrumental in developing and building two poultry centrifuges that are still in use today. As a machinist, he also was instrumental in developing the shaker machinery for The Boysenberry Project and the other shaker mechanisms.
Upon his retirement, he became active at the Davis Senior Center, traveled extensively with his wife up and down the Northwest coast, was an avid bowler and gardener, and took much pleasure in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, to whom he was marriage 61 years; his children, Toni Lorene May and her husband Gary Roland and Bruce Alison May and his wife Victoria; three grandchildren, Sheila Beall, Stacy Roman and her husband John and Robert Neely and his wife Tori; five great-grandchildren, Justin, Corrie, Lindsay, Johnny and Cassie Jo; and numerous other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jack Marshall May.
A memorial service to honor his life will be held Saturday, June 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Davis Senior Center, 646 A St. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Davis Community Clinic.

Ruth Agnes May
Ruth Agnes May died Dec. 29, 2004, after a short illness, surrounded by family and friends. She was 84.
A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Davis Senior Center, 646 A St. in Davis. A reception will follow.
Born to Esther and Thomas Marshall in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, on Aug. 11, 1920, she met Jack Irvin May while in high school in Oakland. They marriage in 1939 and remained in the Bay Area for several years before moving to Davis in July 1955.
She worked several jobs until she found her true calling at the Davis Public Library. For years, everyone knew her as the children's librarian. Her knowledge of children's literature and her congenial nature made her a favorite as the library's storyteller and bell ringer, as well as at the information desk.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack May, and son, Jack.
She is survived by her son, Bruce May and his wife Victoria, and daughters, Toni May and her husband Gary Roland, and Laurel Groff, all of Woodland.
She is further survived by her brother, Thomas Marshall of Los Gatos; and her grandchildren, Sheila Beall and her children Justin and Corey of Woodland; Stacy Roman and her husband John and their children Lindsay, John and Cassie, all of Woodland; and Robert Neely and his daughter Reese Maureen Neely of Sacramento.

MAYES
Ronald D. Mayes
Ronald D. Mayes died at Woodland Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family on March 17, 2006. He was 76.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at the Knights Landing Cemetery followed by a reception in Waite Hall at the Yolo County Fairgrounds. A procession will form behind an antique 1923 American Le France fire engine at the main gate of the Yolo County Fairgrounds then departing for the Knights Landing Cemetery at 1:30, fulfilling his wish to have his last ride on this truck.
Born on May 15, 1929, in Oakland, to Russell and Georgia (McCollum) Mayes, he has been a Yolo County resident for 68 years. He grew up in several western states before settling in Knights Landing and graduating from Woodland High School in 1947. He then went to Sacramento City College. He was a master electrician in Woodland, where he worked for 50 years with Rowland Electric Service, where he became co-owner in 1974.
As a boy, he achieved the honor of an Eagle Scout. He was also active in teaching, the 20-30 Club, Elks Club and the Woodland Volunteer Fire Department. He also volunteered for the Woodland Little League, schools, Sacramento Historic Railways Association (restoring Woodland’s train depot) and Woodland Fire Department’s Support Branch, restoring antique fire engines.
Some favorite pastimes included working in his woodshop, where he made indoor and outdoor furniture, chess sets, and over 60 rocking horses for the benefit of children’s homes, family and friends. He also had a passion for the Sierras where he spent much of his spare time at the family cabin.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, LaVerne (Dolan) Mayes; his daughter, Joan Curtis of Woodland; his son R. Dennis Mayes of Woodland; his grandchildren, Michael Mayes and his wife Suzanne of Sacramento, Jennifer Mayes of Sacramento and John and Joey Curtis of Sacramento; two great-grandchildren Matthew and Emily Mayes of Sacramento and two special nephews Charles DeLaMater of Concord and Robert DeLaMater of Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his brother Jewel V. Mayes; sister Marion Griffin and granddaughter Stacy Ingraham.
The family requests that memorials be directed to Woodland Fire Support Branch, 532 Court Street, Woodland or to the charity of the donor’s choice on Mr. Mayes behalf.

MAYNARD
Robert Tilson Maynard
Robert Tilson Maynard, former mayor of Santa Clara, died June 28, 2003, in Davis. He was 76.
Born Sept. 27, 1926, he served during World War II in the Seabee detachment of the U.S. Navy, from 1943-45. After graduating from law school he became active in Santa Clara, where he served as mayor from 1966-67. He headed up the League of Cities there, as well as the California Trial Lawyers Association.
He is survived by his wife Linda Maynard of Winters, son Steven Maynard, currently serving in the U.S. Air Force, stepchildren Gary Mastriana and Arena Burke, both Bay Area residents, and four grandchildren, as well as numerous business acquaintances in Silicon Valley.
A private memorial will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be sent to The Salvation Army in his name.
