She was known by many as the feisty redhead. Her father built the adobe buildings at the corner of Fourth and G streets, where the family lived upstairs and ran a florist and nursery business downstairs out of the wooden chalet. It was there that she acquired her love of flowers and always had fresh-flowers cut from her garden in her home. Her family said that tending her garden was one of the many great pleasures of her life.
She worked at UC Davis for many years in several positions that took her from the library to financial aid to political science. She was active in politics, and not only ran for Yolo County supervisor herself back in 1974, but spent many years supporting and campaigning for others.
She spent most of her years with the UCD political science department, counseling and mentoring students for internship positions in both Washington, D.C., and Sacramento. She retired after more than 20 years at UC Davis.
She filled the following 10 years working for the Yolo Basin Foundation in support of her love of the outdoors and wildlife. She was described as an avid birder and took trips abroad as well as across the United States in search of birds to see and enjoy. She was a wonderful friend to many people.
She is survived by her daughter, Kendra Tanner and her husband Gerd La Mar of Davis; her son, Barry Tanner of Boulder Creek; her grandchildren, Jed Milroy of Boulder Creek and Kyli Tanner of Davenport; and her step-grandchildren, Eva La Mar and her husband Andrew Fridlund of Eugene, Ore., and Eric La Mar and his wife Jeanette of West Virginia.
She is further survived by her step-great-grandson, Nathaniel La Mar-Fridlund of Eugene, Ore., and close family friend Claudia Ciucci of New York.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the group or charity of the donor's choice.
