Eileen M. Fowler
Eileen M. Fowler died June 9, 2000, after a courageous struggle with a lung disease. Born April 14, 1924, in Charles City, Iowa, she was 76.
Fowler and her husband, Bill, who were marriage June 4, 1950, had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Longtime residents of El Macero, they moved their family from Los Angeles in 1968 to help start the UCD School of Medicine. Eileen took great pride the fact that she and her husband worked as a team to build one of the best rehabilitation medicine programs in the country.
Fowler was born on the family farm, which was lost during the depression. Like so many from her generation, she had to grow up fast and learn to be self-sufficient. Her parents were proud with a strong work ethic and valued education highly.
Fowler started working outside the home during high school and completed some college. During World War II, she worked for the United States Navy department at the Pentagon.
Always interested in health care, Fowler was the medical secretary for a surgeon in her hometown after the war. In 1948, she moved to Los Angeles and became the administrative assistant to the dean of the University of Southern California School of Medicine.
After her son Doug was born, she remained active in numerous community activities and organizations. As wife, homemaker, grandmother and volunteer, she never shied away from taking the initiative. She was a guiding spirit for her extended family.
Her parents, Florence and Fred Myers of Charles City, Iowa, and her brother, Dean Meyers of Minneapolis, Minn. preceded her in death.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Bill; loving son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Pam Fowler of Davis; two cherished grandchildren, Megan and Josh Fowler of Davis; loving sister and brother-in-law June and K. Ejnar Rask of Connecticut; and numerous nephews and nieces throughout the country who will miss her special charm and insights.
Family members held a private remembrance Sunday, June 11, at the UCD Arboretum, one of Fowler's favorite places.
A celebration of her life, for family and friends, is scheduled for Saturday, June 24, at 10:30 a.m., at the University Club, UCD. The event will be another opportunity to gather in tribute and remember her generosity, energy and spirit.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Cache Creek Lodge, 435 Aspen, in Woodland.
HOWARD-DALHAUS
Troy William Howard-Dalhaus
Troy William Howard-Dalhaus passed away Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004 at the age of 36. He was born April 20, 1968 at Camp Pendleton.
Troy attended schools in southern California. He was self-employed and attended the Woodland Family Worship Center Troy is survived by his fiancée Melanie Burton of Woodland and his son, Tanner Dalhaus, both of Woodland, his former wife Kimberly Dalhaus and daughters Mikayla and Hailey Dalhaus of San Leandro; and Suzanne Farrell and their children, Cody and Reed Dalhaus of Woodland, mother Gail Skellchock and her husband Robert of Woodland. Father Dean Howard and his wife Debbie of Briggs. Maternal grandmother Ella Frost of Davis and paternal grandmother Stella Howard of Arkansas. Brothers David Howard of Vacaville and Brandon Howard of Woodland. Stepsister, Tiffany Brown and her husband Anthony of Hawaii. Stepbrother, Derek Skellchock of Colorado. Numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Herchel Frost and Elzy W. Howard; his brother Dwayne N. Howard and his uncle Oscar N. Howard.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Calvary Baptist Church, 506 Cottonwood St., Woodland at 10 a.m.
Memorials may be directed to the trust fund set up for his children, Woodland Branch, Wells Fargo Bank, Gail Skellchock for Troy Dalhaus.
McNary's Chapel of Woodland assisted the family with arrangements.
HOWELL
Donna Jean Howell
Donna Jean Howell, age 62, passed away in Seeley Lake, Montana on April 15, 2003, after a 50-year battle with diabetes.
No words can describe the dignity with which she handled her life-long health problems.
Donna was born Sept. 30, 1940 in Polson, Montana. She was raised in Montana and later lived in Seattle, Washington, where she marriage William Howell in 1969. She and her family moved to Woodland in 1973. Donna resided in Woodland for a majority of the time from 1973 to 2001, when she moved to Montana. She was a member of the Woodland Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 2345 for over 25 years.
Donna is survived by her mother, Ruth Evans-Ladwig of Palmdale; her two sons, Carey Howell and his wife, Jennifer, of Antelope, and Robert Howell and his wife, Leticia, of Woodland; her three grandsons, Matthew, Christopher, and Andrew; her brother, Dennis Rathbun of Salt Lake City, Utah; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Donna was preceded in death by her father, Paul Rathbun.
The family requests memorials be directed to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003, at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 37650 Highway 16, Woodland.
HOY
SAMUEL H. HOY CLAIMED BY DEATH
Samuel H. Hoy, pioneer resident of Yolo County, and one of Winters' most colorful citizens passed to his reward at 10:30 Monday night after an illness of about six weeks duration.
Mr. Hoy was born in Sacramento 71 years ago and made Yolo County, Winters in particular his home all these years.
His father was William Hensley Hoy and mother Susan Shelby Hoy. His father passed away when he was a babe of but six weeks. His mother marriage James Lillard, a rancher near Plainfield, when Sam was three years of age.
Much of the boyhood of Mr. Hoy was spent at the home of his sister, Mrs. J. H. Ely.
In his youth, he gravitated to race horses, first as a jockey in the employ of Johnnie Adams of Berryessa Valley and later owning some of the best harness horses training them at his own barns and track near Winters, and driving his own string at the big race meets of the State in the days gone by when horse racing was the sport of kings. Colonel Hick man, raised by the late Jude Sims, was Hoy's first horse. Two of the best of his barns were Kelley Briggs and Rita H., both pacers. Kelley Briggs had a record of 2:06.
As the race horse business waned Mr. Hoy planted his 50 acre race track property to almonds which he farmed himself.
When a boy Mr. Hoy attended school at Buckeye in the days when Buckeye was a budding town, and the only town around. He also went to school at Pine Grove before the school house at Winters was built.
Arriving at the age of 19 he had already discovered his life mate and was marriage to Miss Sarah Steward who survives him. Four children survive this union, William H. and Ben E. Hoy, Mrs. Edna Chapman, all of Yolo county and Mrs. Rita Culley of Auburn. A daughter, Mrs. Ruby Ely passed away leaving a son, Robert. There are eight grand children, and one great grandchild.
Mr. and Mrs. Hoy have been part of Winters' social life since the town's founding. Mr. Hoy, being musically inclined, often presided at the violin at the early day dances, and as the town grew he joined the first brass band and was always identified with musical organizations.
Politically Mr. Hoy was a Democrat and took considerable interest in politics but never aspired to public office. He was past master of Buckeye Lodge, F. & A. M. and a member for forty-six years.
Funeral services were held yesterday morning at 10 o'clock at Kraft Bros. Chapel in Woodland, Rev. Alec G. Nichols of Winters Methodist church officiating.
Interment was in the cemetery at Winters, the Masonic Lodge conducting services at the grave side.
Song services were rendered by C. P. and C.S. Culton, and the pallbearers were G.D. Cooper, J.R. Briggs, R.B. Bigelow, J.W. Lamme, T.D. Parker, and C.E. Smith.

Sarah Hoy

Last Rites Held Wednesday For Mrs. Sarah Hoy
One of the last of the pioneers who crossed the plains in a covered wagon, Mrs. Sarah Ellen Hoy, 90, was buried
here Wednesday following funeral services at the McNary Funeral Home in Woodland.
Rev. Ralph Isaacson of the First Christian church officiated.
Mrs. Hugh Woolworth was organist.
Casket bearers were Jack F. Vasey, Gregory M. Vasey, Lester M. Ireland, James Martino, Ray H. Baker and Wayne Sharp.
Mrs. Hoy died early Monday morning at Yolo General hospital where she had been hospitalized for four weeks.
She had been in failing health for about a year.
A native of Olem, Iowa, Mrs. Hoy was born October 18, 1862, the daughter of the late Jonah P. and Ellen Stewart, pioneer resident of Winters.
She came to this locality with her parents, at the age of ten years, and had since lived continuously in this city.
Her home was at 27 Russell street.
She was the widow of Samuel H. Hoy, who died a number of years ago.
They observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1929.
Immediate survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Walter R. Chapman of Winters, and Mrs. Rita Cully of Auburn; two sons, William H. Hoy of Oakley and Ben E. Hoy of Bieber.

HOYLE
James Samuel Hoyle
James Samuel Hoyle died on Aug. 10, 2005 in Woodland at age 94.
He was born Oct. 5, 1910, in Mobile, Ala., to the late Fred and Loula Clark Hoyle. He had been a Yolo County resident for 35 years. He attended school through the eighth grade and worked for Consolidated Milling Company in South San Francisco as a warehouseman for 45 years. He was also a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include son, James I. Hoyle and wife Rosemary L. Hoyle of Jackson; grandson, James Scott Hoyle and wife Christy Hoyle of Elk Grove and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Moreen Hoyle; brothers, Fred Hoyle Jr., Earl Hoyle, and Robert Hoyle; sister, Thelma Cathie; daughter, Peggy Ann Hoyle.
Services: A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug 16, 2005, at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St. Officiating will be Elmer Prout and Jim Hill. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park in San Francisco.
