Moreen M. Hoyle
Moreen M. Hoyle died at Cottonwood Healthcare on Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at age 86. She was born the first of 10 children in Rush Springs, Okla., on Jan. 6, 1916 to the late Vin H. and Carrie B. Irwin.
She had been a resident of Yolo County for 32 years. She and her husband moved to Guinda after retiring and sent their time growing almonds.
They recently moved to the Californian in Woodland. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Woodland.
According to family members, Mrs. Hoyle loved sewing and was an accomplished seamstress.
Mrs. Hoyle is survived by her husband of 67 years, James S. Hoyle of Woodland; son Jim Hoyle and wife Rosemary of Jackson; and grandson James Scott Hoyle and wife Christy of Elk Grove.
She is also survived by sister Alene Ventura of Woodland; brothers Vin Irwin of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; Glen Irwin of Tulsa; Okla.; and Houston Irwin of Long Beach.
She was preceded in death by daughter Peggy Ann Hoyle in 1973, sister Fayrene Faulkner, and brothers Robert, Roy, Leon and Elmo Irwin.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at McNary's Chapel.
Interment will be private at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Colma.
McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
HSIEH
Yuan L. Hsieh
Yuan Liao Hsieh died April 24, 2001, in Sacramento. Born March 12, 1914, in Taiwan, she was 87.
A resident of Davis for 31 years, she was a member of the Davis Chinese Christian Church.
She is survived by four children and their spouses, Dennis and Lucy Hsieh of Davis, Tom and Kim Hsieh of Davis, Bernice and Ben Song of Palo Alto, and May and Ker Chang of Fountain Valley. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Jack Hsieh of Castro Valley; T.J. Hsieh of Davis; Hoy Hsieh of Los Angeles; Anne, Sean and Lynn Hsieh of Davis; Grace Song of Los Angeles; and Elizabeth and Emilie Chang of Los Angeles.
A graveside funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Davis Chinese Christian Church, 536 Anderson Road.
Remembrances may be made in her name to the Asian Community Nursing Center, 7801 Rush River Drive, Sacramento, CA, or to the Davis Chinese Christian Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Chapel.
HUBBARD
Sidney B. Hubbard
Recently diagnosed with cancer, Sidney Bartholomew Hubbard died July 7, 2002, from a diabetic shock. He was 56 years old.
He was born June 8, 1946, in Niagara Falls, N.Y. In 1968, he graduated from the University of Rochester with a bachelor's degree in history. Upon graduation, he served two years in the Peace Corps in Zambales, the Philippines, where he met his wife Justice.
In 1973, he earned his juris doctor degree from Boston University and later went to work as an attorney for the Inter-Tribal Council of California. While he maintained his membership in the California State Bar, he had not practiced law in more than a decade at the time of his death.
He lived life to the beat of his own drum. He brought his wife to the United States after his Peace Corps stint and together they fought the racism that mixed couples sometimes face. At one time, he became personally responsible for bringing dozens of Justice's family members to this country. He believed himself to be part of the civil rights movement and often provided pro bono legal assistance to those who felt they were oppressed.
For the last decade, he fought and won the battle of drug and alcohol addiction, remaining clean and sober for the last several months of his life. Though he remained homeless for those months, he was known to literally give the shirt off his back to help someone else in need.
He is survived by his children, Bart, Sidney and Ruby Hubbard; their mother, J.D. Asis, formerly J.D. Hubbard; and grandchildren, John, Grey, Brandon, Amer, Allurai and Elaney.
He is further survived by his uncle, Horatio Seaward; brothers, George and John Hubbard; stepsisters, Janet Wilson and Katherine Smythe; stepbrothers, William and Robert Kaczoe; stepmother, Florence Hubbard; and many nephews, nieces and loving friends.
A memorial service was held at Mount Vernon Memorial Park Church of the Valley on July 20. He will be interred Saturday in Niagara Falls Memorial Park in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
HUBBS
Alice Knapp Hubbs
Alice Knapp Hubbs died on Jan. 30, 2003, in Davis. Born July 17, 1923, to William Pennington and Alice Noble Knapp, she was 79 years old.
She was born and raised in Denver where she received her associate of arts degree before joining the U.S. Navy in 1943.
After her discharge from the Navy in 1946, she marriage and had a son, Tom.
In 1949, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where her two daughters, Joyce and Judy, were born.
When she moved to Washington, D.C., in 1971, she began her post as the women's editor for the Stars and Stripes National Tribune, a newspaper serving the U.S. armed forces.
She served in this position for eight years before continuing her professional life as a secretary and journalist in Los Angeles.
She was able to type 120 words per minute on a manual typewriter.
Always concerned for human rights, she advocated for veterans during the administrations of Presidents Ford and Carter.
She continued to be an advocate during her later years at Sierra Health Care, where she never hesitated to speak up on behalf of others.
In 1981, she moved to the Reno, Nev., area to be near her son, Tom, and her grandchildren.
She moved to Davis in 1996, living most recently at Sierra Health Care, where she made many friends.
She had many talents and hobbies, including piano playing and singing.
She enjoyed writing children's books and was skilled in needlepoint, crewel and embroidery.
She loved good books and movies and brought joy to many at Sierra by organizing video tours of the world for the residents.
She was dearly loved and will be missed by all of her family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Tom Lee of Seattle, Wash., Joyce Bimson and her husband Ted of Davis and Judy Lee of Davis.
She is further survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the Reno and Davis areas.
A private funeral was held at Davis Funeral Chapel on Feb. 3, 2003. At the family's request, remembrances may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
HUBERT
Grace Leatrus Hubert
Grace Leatrus Hubert died at Woodland Memorial Hospital Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at age 85.
Born July 29, 1918, in Franklin, Texas, Mrs. Hubert had been a Yolo County resident for 65 years.
She was a self-employed for 40 years and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her sons, William Hubert and wife Candie of Woodland, Leonard Curnuff and wife Cheryl of Woodland; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wilford Hubert, in 1950; daughter, Shirley Grace Hubert, in 1950; son, James Alvin, in 1950; and granddaughter, Karen Curnutt.
The family requests memorials be directed to Muscular Dystrophy Association, 650 University Ave., Suite 108, Sacramento 95825.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland.

HUBERT
Harvey (Bud) Irvin Hubert
Harvey (Bud) Irvin Hubert died at his Pleasants Valley home, west of Winters, Friday, April 9, 2004 at the age of 94.
A Winters resident for 90 years, Mr. Hubert was born to John and Artimissa (Davis) Hubert on Dec. 5, 1909 in Palermo. At the time of his birth, his father was working the orange groves. Mr. Hubert's grandfather, Harris Hubert, settled in Pleasants Valley in the 1890s. As a child, Bud and his family lived and worked on the Pleasant Ranch, where he attended Pleasant's Valley School. There he met Welda Tucker, his wife to be, who was a daughter of a pioneer family who had settled in Winters in the 1870s. During the 1920s Bud's father owned and operated a gas station at Fourth Street and Grant Avenue. Bud attended Winters Elementary School. He often told the story about the school swaying back and forth when the wind would blow.
He marriage Welda in 1932. Bud was employed as a foreman by the Gaddini Ranch. He served in this position for 10 years. Two sons were born to the Hubert family during this time.
In 1942, Mr. Hubert purchased the Sky High Fruit Ranch, next to Welda's father's ranch, the Tucker homestead. The mountaintop orchard was known for having the first apricots of the season, sent to the local and eastern markets. Though the orchard had been neglected for a long time, with hard work Mr. Hubert was successful and paid off the ranch in short order. Two daughters were born in the early 1940s.
Bud was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life. This love has been passed on to his sons, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his sons Bud, of Yolo, and John and his wife Judith, of Gualala; daughters Gail Gage and her husband Richard, of Winters, and Vicky Hayes and her husband Dale of Washington; grandchildren Lynnette, Elsie, Cara, Jody, Jamie, Mike, Joe, Doug, Nathan, Bill and Lee. He is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hubert was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Welda, in 1983.
A graveside service was held on Tuesday, April 13, at the Winters Cemetery.

HUGHES
Eugenia R. Hughes
Eugenia R. Hughes passed away at her Winters home on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, after a lengthy illness. Born on Nov. 22, 1925 in Winters to Emilio and Maria Ramos, she was 79 years old.
Mrs. Hughes was raised in Winters, where she graduated from Winters High School. She lived in the Bay Area for many years, before returning to Winters in 1993. Her family described her as a very loving and spirited person who had a generous heart. She loved the color pink and was known to many as the "Pink Lady."
She is survived by her husband, Roland Hughes, of Winters; her children, Veronica Martin, of Oakland, Carroll Quam and his wife, Jane, of San Leandro, and Lorrie Quam, of Santa Rosa. She is further survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Ramos, of Williams, Emily Restuch, of Oakdale, Beatrice Ramos, of Vacaville, Carmen Rubio and Rose Ramos, both of Winters, Flora Carillo, of Sacramento and Eleanore Williams, of Davis.
Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her parents, Emilio and Maria Ramos, and a brother, Raymond Ramos.
The evening vigil service was held on Sunday, Aug. 7, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. The funeral mass was held on Monday, Aug. 8, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial was held at the Winters Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
