Henry F. "Harry" Hughes
A memorial service was held Friday for Sequim, Wash., resident Henry F. "Harry" Hughes, who died unexpectedly June 6, 2005, at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle. He was 75.
Hughes was a business graduate of George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Subsequently, he served 32 years in active and reserve military, retiring in September 1979 after 20 years in the U.S. Navy as a naval intelligence officer.
Harry and Barbara, his wife of almost 30 years, lived in the Seattle area from 1979 to 1992 and were active in the Lake City Presbyterian Church. During part of that time he was an accountant with Windermere Real Estate.
Soon after moving to Sequim in 1992, he looked for ways to serve the community and happily found that Rotary International filled those goals beyond expectations. He also helped with Friends of the Library, the Lavender Festival and other volunteer events.
He was a proud member of the multi-gallon blood donor club. His favorite pastimes included golf, racquetball, jigsaw puzzles and dancing.
In addition to his wife Barbara, he is survived by his daughter, Sherry Richter Puntillo and son-in-law Ted Puntillo of Davis; daughter, Laura Hughes, and son Keith Hughes and daughter-in-law Karen, all of San Diego; three grandchildren, Lindsey Richter, Christopher and Sarah Hughes; and several cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to the Sequim Rotary Club Dictionary Project (through which every fourth-grader receives a new dictionary), P.O. Box 1267, Sequim, WA 98382.
HUGHES
Romaine “Violet” Hughes
Romaine “Violet” Hughes, born July 8, 1912 in Denver, Colorado, passed away at her Winters home Sunday, December 4, 2005. She was 93 years old. A Winters resident for the last 60 years, she was the loving mother of 8 children, 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by one daughter and her parents. Per her wishes, a graveside service was held at Winters Cemetery on Friday December 9.
HULL
Marie Adeline Hull
Longtime Davis resident Marie Adeline Hull died June 30, 2004, at the Courtyard Health Care Center. She was 76.
She was the 11th child born to the late John and Adeline (Collett) Matheson on Oct. 10, 1927, in Nore, Minn. She attended school in Minnesota and later moved to California.
She met her husband, Rolland, in Stockton and they were marriage on Sept. 2, 1950. They would have celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary this September.
In 1966, the couple moved to Davis and opened Hull's Jewelers in downtown Davis. Marie loved working alongside her husband and often commented what a joy it was to work in such a happy business where they could be a part of special events in other people's lives. After many years of being in business together, they retired in 1994.
She was a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church for many years where she served on the altar guild and was a wedding coordinator. She was a member of the El Macero Republican Women where she served as treasurer.
She enjoyed spending time at home and in her gardens, hosting family get-togethers, visiting with her grandchildren, vacationing in Carmel, taking leisurely drives along the coast to watch the sea otters play, dancing, and eating fresh crab and an occasional ice cream cone.
"Marie was devoted to her family and was a wonderful role model for her children and grandchildren, " her family says. "She had a heartwarming smile and a kind, gentle nature. She will be deeply missed."
She is survived by her husband, Rolland; her daughter, Gwenn Childers and her husband Brian of Woodland; her son, Greg Hull and his wife Kelly of Davis; three grandchildren, Amanda Cadman and her family of Petaluma, and Rollie and Glenn Hull of Davis; and two brothers, Ralph Matheson and Maurice Matheson of Northome, Minn. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

HULSE
June Elizabeth Hulse
June Elizabeth Hulse of Dixon died Oct. 9, 2003, in Woodland from a sudden illness. She was 78.
Born in Whittier on July 10, 1925, she lived in Dixon for 46 years and was marriage to her husband, Roscoe Hulse Jr., for 58 years. A longtime employee of Bank of America, she retired in 1987. She enjoyed reading, tap dancing, senior citizens' activities and family gatherings.
She is survived by her husband, daughter Sally Galindo and her husband Michael of Dixon, son Jeff T. Hulse and his wife Mary Lou of Davis, sister Alice A. Hudson of Sacramento, brother Tom J. Hudson of Anderson, grandchildren Mike Galindo, Matt Galindo, Jeffrey Hulse, Michele Tupin, April Straub, Julee Henley and Monica Freeman, and great-grandchildren Anthony Galindo, Ashley Tupin, Faith Tupin, Hailey Tupin, Eliana Freeman and Alexandra Freeman, as well as numerous friends.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at United Methodist Church of Dixon, with burial at the Dixon Cemetery. Rev. Cathy Morris will officiate.
The family asks that donations in memory of the deceased be made to the Dixon Public Library.
HUMMEL
Miriam Elizabeth Hummel
Miriam Elizabeth Hummel, a longtime Davis resident, died at Sierra Health Care Convalescent Hospital on Nov. 29, 2001. She was 81. In June, she was diagnosed with leukemia.
She was born on April 5, 1920, in Warren, Pa., and came to California in the 1930s with her parents, Harold M. Hummel and Marjorie Fisher Hummel. The family settled in Berkeley, where Miriam Hummel earned two degrees from the University of California, a bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences in 1940 and a master's degree in nutrition in 1947. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
She never marriage; her life was dedicated to higher education and caring for her parents. She retired from UC Davis in 1978 after 21 years of service as a librarian at Shields Library. From 1946 to 1954 she was an assistant home economist at Colorado A&M (State) University and, from 1941 to 1946 she was a teaching assistant in home economics at UC Berkeley.
She took care of her parents after they retired to Davis in the early 1960s. Her father died in 1975 and her mother died at age 104 on Dec. 24, 1998.
Miriam was a longtime member of the Core Area neighborhood and, like her mother, will be remembered by her friends, neighbors and loved ones as a kind, gentle, caring woman. She had a lifelong desire to learn and make the world a better place. She actively supported many charities, especially those working in the fields of education, medical research, the environment, and social services.
She rests in peace with her mother, father, and uncle at Oakland Cemetery in Warren, Pa., and is survived by nine first cousins.
HUNDLEY
Theodore R. Hundley
Theodore 'Ted' Ray Hundley died June 5, 2000, at the UC Davis Medical Center, in Sacramento, following a long battle with illness. He was 46. Born July 31, 1953, in Spring Hill, W. Va., he was raised in St. Albans, W. Va.
After graduating from St. Albans High School, Hundley joined the United States Air Force in 1971. While there, he trained in radiology, a career that spanned 29 years, 15 of which were spent at the Woodland Memorial Hospital X-ray department.
Hundley lived in California for 20 years and was a resident of Woodland for the last 14. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, painting, outdoor activities and building models.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Terri Bruce; two sons, Jason and Eric of Woodland; two sisters, Debbie and husband Steve Stodgen and Faith and husband J.B. Garrett, all of St. Albans, W. Va.; three brothers, Danny and wife Kathy of Richmond, Va., Garrett Hoby of Temecula and Scott and wife Pam of St. Albans, W. Va.; and numerous in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at Woodland Memorial Hospital on July 6 at 6:30 p.m. The gathering will take place on the grassy area between the hospital driveway and the Surgery Center parking group.
The family requests memorials be directed to the American Liver Foundation or the American Diabetes Association.
ZERGER
Edna L. Zerger
Edna Zerger died June 16, 2005, while at Sierra Healthcare in Davis. She was 87.
A graveside funeral service begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Smith Mountain Cemetery, 42088 Road 100 in Dinuba.
Born Sept. 23, 1917, in Kansas, to David and Marrie Goering, she grew up on a farm in Pretty Prairie, Kan. At the age of 19, she marriage Arthur Zerger and the couple moved to California where they lived and worked on a farm outside of Chino.
She was described by her family as on old-fashioned farm wife who baked her own bread, and spread her own homemade butter and jam on it. She was known for making homemade ice cream and sausage. She also preserved and froze much of her own food.
The family dining table was known as the family gathering place for the holidays and special occasions.
She was active in her church and enjoyed singing in the church choir in Orange Cove where she and her husband Art moved in 1978. Due to her failing health, she spent the last four years of her life in Davis, close to her family. She will always be remembered by her family as a cheerful and positive person throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Zerger, in November 1995.
She is survived by her son, Darrel Zerger and his wife Phyllis of Davis; grandsons, Todd Zerger of Plymouth, Minn., and Jeffrey Zerger of Berkeley; and great-grandson Devin.
She is further survived by her sister Betty Ballentine of California.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Chapel.
