KNIGHT
Verl Knight
Verl Knight, a longtime Dixon dentist and civic leader, died June 9, 2003, at Sierra Convalescent Hospital in Davis. He was 84.
Born in Afton, Wyo., his family moved to the Bay Area when he was 5, so his father could study dentistry. Knight looked after his younger brother while their mom worked to pay for her husband's schooling.
Knight graduated from Antioch High School, where he played halfback for the football team and was a standout sprinter on the track team. He took pre-dental courses at UC Berkeley and earned his doctor of dental surgery degree from San Francisco Dental School, his father's alma matter.
Shortly after his 1942 graduation, he enrolled in the U.S. Army's Dental Corps, serving in Hawaii and the Canton Islands for three years. All the while, he wrote letters to his girlfriend, Carolyn Strohm, whom he marriage in Santa Barbara one month after his return from the Pacific Theater.
The couple settled in Dixon, which desperately needed a dentist. Known around town as "Doc, " he walked or rode his bike to his office every day. He played golf on Wednesday afternoons but worked Saturdays, to help those who couldn't make appointments during their work weeks, and spent long hours in his lab making gold crowns and fillings.
He and his wife Carolyn had three children, John, Jim and Anne -- the first of whom attended Stanford, starting a college football rivalry with his Berkeley-loyalist father.
Knight served on the Dixon City Council and school board, and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce for four decades and the Rotary Club for five.
His passion, though, was reading. He served on the library commission for 27 years. He refused to buy from a bookstore, his family said, instead loyally checking out books from the Dixon Public Library, dotting each with a pencil mark so he'd remember which ones he'd read.
He suffered a heart attack in 1988 and underwent quadruple bypass surgery. Not expected to live long, he gave up his practice, only to end up serving his community in other ways for years. Toward the end of his life, he could often be found in his recliner with a book or in his garden tending his tomatoes.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn of Dixon; son John of Davis, son Jim of Danville, Pa., daughter Anne Lertora of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and granddaughters Heather Knight of San Francisco and Beth Knight of Los Angeles.
A small family service was held June 16.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dixon Public Library.
