Violet Loy Koehn
Violet Loy Koehn died at Woodland Memorial Hospital in Woodland on Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at the age of 74. Born on March 21, 1927, in Arbuckle to Otha and Charlotte (Judson) Nickell, Mrs. Koehn had been a resident of Yolo County for more than 40 years.
Family members reported that Mrs. Koehn was very active in several local and national organizations. She was president of the Woodland Chapter of the Business and Professional Women's Association from 1982 through 1983. In 1986, Mrs. Koehn received the award for “greatest achievements as a business owner" from the Business and Professional Women's Association. She owned and operated Simply Ceramics, which provided ceramic supplies. She also taught classes in ceramic artwork.
Mrs. Koehn retired in 1991, and family members reported that she enjoyed making ceramics at her home, reading, and visiting with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Koehn is survived by her mother, Charlotte Nickell of Woodland; daughter, Diana Ware of Rancho Cordova; son, Kevin Irvine and his wife Jan of Powderly, Texas; brother, Robert Nickell and wife Elaine of Stockton; sister, Veda Nickell of Woodland. She is also survived by grandchildren, Kimberly Junker, Jason Ware, Kandace and Nicholas Irvine; and one great grandson, Dakota Ware.
Family members reported that "Mrs. Koehn will best be remembered for her loving and gentle way, and her desire to always be there for others."
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Kraft Bros. Chapel, 175 Second St., Woodland. Pastor Henry Scherer will be officiating. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors is assisting the family with arrangements.
KOFRANEK
Anton Miles Kofranek
Anton Miles Kofranek, UC Davis professor emeritus, died March 29, 2006, in Davis after a short bout with cancer. He was 85.
Born in Chicago on Feb. 5, 1921, to Antonin and Emma Kofranek, he served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II, first in the European Theater and then in the Pacific, where he served during the occupation of Japan.
He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1947, and his master's and doctorate degrees from Cornell in 1950 under Kenneth Post. He became a professor of floriculture at UCLA in 1950 and was appointed professor of horticulture at UC Davis in 1968, serving until he retired in 1987. He was best known for his work with azaleas, chrysanthemums, poinsettias and bulbs.
He authored and co-authored several books and publications during his career, including the University of California Azalea Manual and Plant Science, 2nd edition. He was a recipient of the research award of merit from the State Florist Association, the Alex Laurie award in 1993, the Garland Award and a teaching award from the Society of American Florists, and the research award for 2004 from the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers.
He was a fellow of the American Society of Horticulture Science and was inducted into the Flower Growers Hall of Fame in 2004.
He loved to travel and served as a visiting professor in the Netherlands, Israel and Egypt. He consulted in South Africa, India, Colombia and the Canary Islands. He and his wife continued to travel until very recently.
He is survived by his wife, Winifred Floyd; his children from an earlier marriage, daughter Nancy Kofranek of Oxnard and son John Kofranek of Alameda; grandchildren, Brian and Brandon Buck of Arizona, David Kofranek of Eugene, Ore., and Sara Evans of Antioch; and his former wife, Fran Kofranek of Davis.
He is further survived by five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at Wiscombe's Davis Funeral Chapel.

KOMULA
Eino J. Komula
Eino J. Komula died in Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at age 94.
Born Feb. 1, 1908, in Coburntown, Mich., Mr. Komula was a resident of Chassell, Mich. He was the son of the late Oscar and Anna (Wayrynen) Komula and attended the Sturgeon River School. On Aug. 24, 1935, he marriage Toini D. Virenius in Hancock, Mich. He was first employed with Komula Sales and Service of Hancock where he drove car transport. He then worked in the woods as a logger. He also worked for several farmers while living in Woodland from 1961 through 1970. Prior to his retirement, he was a truck driver for the Copper Country Dairy of Dollar Bay. According to his family members, "he was well liked by the people he met and will be remembered for his good sense of humor."
Mr. Komula is survived by his wife of 67 years, Toini (Virenius) Komula of Chassell, Mich.; daughter, Mona Thomas and husband John P.; son, Ronald Komula and wife Linda, all of Woodland; grandchildren, Jasen and Kevin Thomas, and Erik and Ryan Komula, also all of Woodland; brother, John Komula and wife Betty of Chassell, Mich.; sisters, Ida Hilberg, a patient at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock, Sylvia Aho of Chassell, Mich., Lydia Korpi of Colorado Springs, Colo., Helen Barkkari of the Bluffs, Houghton, Mich.; and numerous nieces; nephews; and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Waino, Jack, Earl and William "Bill" Komula; and sisters, Ilene Junttila and Ann Lescelius.
A private funeral service is scheduled today Thursday, July 11, at Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home of Hancock, with the Rev. Ted Koehl to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
The family requests memorials be directed to the charity of the donor's choice in his behalf.

KONO
Tokuwo Kono
Tokuwo Kono died on Jan. 22, 2000, in a Sacramento hospital. Born on July 6, 1925, in Hilo, Hawaii, to Tadami and Sumiyo Kono, he was 74.
He was a resident of Davis for 42 years and retired as an entomologist with UC Davis.
He graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1949 and marriage Constance Inada in 1950. He then completed his master's degree in agriculture at the University of Iowa and then worked for a short period in Hawaii as a supervisor with the Hawaiian Sugar Plantation Association. He was also a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by his mother, of Hilo, Hawaii; wife, Constance S. Kono of Davis; daughter, Donna Alko Kono of Davis; son, Terry Takumi Kono of Abilene, Texas; and two brothers, Saburo Kono of Hilo, Hawaii, and Teruo Kono of Waipahu, Hawaii.
Services will be private and are being handled by Davis Funeral Chapel.
KOPP
Sam Peter Kopp
Sam Peter Kopp died on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005 in his Woodland residence at age 16.
Born Jan 24, 1989 in Sacramento to Donald and Rhonda Kopp, he was a child who was always fond of toys, Sponge Bob and Disney music.
He had been a Yolo County resident for 16 years.
Survivors include Mr. Kopp's parents, Donald and Rhonda Kopp; brothers, Robert Kopp of Roseville, Nicholas and Aaron Kopp of Woodland; grandparents, Gary and Marilyn Dixon of Woodland; uncles and aunts, Paul Schlaht, Marlee Stuller and Matt Stuller.
He is also survived by numerous cousins.
Services: Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2005 at Kraft Bros. Chapel, 175 2nd St. Woodland. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005 at Kraft Bros. Chapel. Interment will follow at at Woodland Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to Children's Therapy Center.

KOSKI
Thomas Edward Koski
Thomas Edward Koski entered into rest in Roseville on June 9, 2003, Born on Feb. 20, 1952 in Richmond, he was 51 years old.
Tom was a loving husband and devoted father above all else. He enjoyed fishing, camping, going to and watching horse races, but his enthusiasm for the Raiders was unsurpassed. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church. He worked as a butcher for 25 years.
He is survived by his wife Linda Koski, of Lincoln; daughters Sondra Koski of Winters and Diana Hughes of Lincoln, Sabrina Kwok and Amanda Kwok of Lincoln; son Tommy Koski of Winters; sisters Pat Castro of Redding, Gina Hinck of Moraga, Deloris Jones of Pollack Pines, Carol Ward of Pinole and Kathy Rainford of Kalama, Washington and brothers Peter Koski of Pinole, Ronald Koski of Hercules and Stan Koski of Pinole.
A recitation of Rosary was held on Sunday, June 15 at the Lincoln Funeral Home. A mass of Christian burial was held on Monday, June 16 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Vacaville. Inurnment was private.
The family choice for memorial donations is the Children's Heart Fund.
KOZIMA
Henry Dvorak Kozima
Henry Dvorak Kozima was born on June 20, 1925, and died on Aug. 18, 2005. He was 80.
A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m.Tuesday, Monument Hill Memorial Park, 35036 County Road 22 in Woodland.
Kozima was born in Los Angeles to Hiroshima and Agnes Dvorak Kozima and attended Garfield High School.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in the Army Air Corps as a staff sergeant in the 307th Bombardment Group. He flew 44 missions during World War II including a crash landing that destroyed his Liberator bomber. He was honorably discharged in 1945 having earned several medals including the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
He was employed as a butcher for the Farmer John Meat Co. for 40 years until his retirement in 1987. He lived in Yolo County for the past 12 years.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gloria Kozima. He also is survived by his daughter, Nancy Truitt, and her husband, John, and son, John Kozima, all of Woodland. Additional survivors include son Ronald Kozima of Huntington Beach, and four grandchildren in Woodland and Sacramento.
