Alfred Baxter Freeman
SUDDEN PASSING OF A. B. FREEMAN
Alfred Baxter Freeman, resident of Winters for the past forty four years passed away suddenly in his home early Tuesday morning at the age of 60 years, 10 months, and 5 days.
Deceased was a native of Missouri coming to California when but one year old and settling with the family in Lake County where they resided for sixteen years.
Afterwards the family moved to Winters where Freeman remained the rest of his life.
He had been in poor health for some time following a paralytic stroke about a year ago.
Freeman was united in marriage to Sadie E. Smith who with six children and seven grand children survived.
Children are Mrs. Nellie Hurdle of Sacramento, Mrs. Velma Saunders of Srathmore, William Freeman of Roseville, LeRoy and Ralph Freeman and Mrs. Mary Shepard of Winters.
A sister, Mrs. Agnes Boles of Los Angeles and a brother, Avery Freeman of Woodland also survive.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
The pastor C.P. Barkman officiating under C.W. McNary. C.Perry and C.S Culton offered song service.
Casket bearers were: George Scott, E.W. Fenley, Frank McGraw, N.A. McArthur, William Emery and Oscar Ormiston.
Many beautiful floral offerings were given in tribute of life long friendships.
He was placed to rest on the family plot in the Masonic Cemetery.
Out of town relatives noted in attendance were Mrs. C. R. Boles and Mrs. Ross Saunders and family, and Mrs. Nellie Hurdle and daughter.

James Michael Freeman, Sr.
James Michael Freeman Sr. died July 11, 2005, at his home in Davis after years of battling cancer. He was 76.
He will be interred at St. Joseph's Cemetery, on West Street in Woodland. A graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13.
Born July 22, 1928, in Minneapolis, he moved his with grandmother, Lillian Mae Thiers, at a very young age to Woodland, where she raised him.
He attended public schools in Woodland. He later served in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge in 1951.
He was employed by Pacific Gas and Electric in Davis for 40 years as a machinist welder. He received several Pacific Service Employee Certificates along with Employee Suggestion System Idea Club certificates for improving company operations. He was very creative and mechanically inclined, his family said.
He retired in August 1993 from PG&E.
He was preceded in death by his father, Michal Freeman of Minnesota; mother, Grayce Martinez of Woodland; two wives, Meta Freeman of Sacramento and Fern O'Dell Freeman of Roseville; sister, Delores Simon of Minnesota; and son, James Freeman Jr. of Davis.
He is survived by two daughters, Sheila Carpenter of Davis and Alice McMahan of Sacramento; two half-brothers, LaVerne and Val Ganz of Woodland; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was a loving father and grandfather, and was loved and will be missed by many, his family said.

Michael Shawn Freeman
Michael Shawn Freeman died in his Woodland home following a brief illness on Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at age 32.
He was born in Long Beach to Thomas Allen and Melanie Lee (Cannon) Rand.
He attended schools in southern California before moving to Yolo County six years ago to work and live. Michael loved the outdoors and almost all the activities associated with being in the open spaces, such as camping and hiking with friends, and fishing all the rivers, lakes and streams of Northern California. As an avid lover of antiques, the areas in and around Yolo County afforded him lots of time to look and search for those things he loved.
He had made many friends with his co-workers at the Target Regional Center Warehouses and retail store, and was loved and respected by everyone he came in contact with, according to these friends and associates. They all felt "he was a great guy who had so much to live for."
His parents and brothers of southern California and his friend, Wayne Stelmak of Woodland, survive Mr. Freeman. Private services have been held with interment scheduled for a later date.
Memorial remembrances may be made in Michael's name to Yolo Hospice, Post Office Box 1014, Davis, 95617.

W. H. Freeman
RITES HELD FOR LAST GAR VETERAN
W. H. Freeman, Winters last Grand Army of the Republic Veteran passed away at the home of his son, A.B. Freeman Saturday.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock his pastor Charles P. Barkman delivering the address.
A number of members of the Winters Post American legion were in attendance in a body. Song service was rendered by C.P. and C.S. Culton and Mrs. N.A. McArthur.
Rev. Barkman gave a short resume of Mr. Freeman's life and his principles as exemplified by his Christian conduct.
Mr. Freeman joined the Presbyterian Church in Missouri and united with the Winters church in 1882.
It was his custom to sit in a certain pew and when at any Sunday service his seat was vacant, Rev. Barkman said it was not asked "Is he sick?" but rather "Let's go and see how sick he is." As a tribute to Mr. Freeman's fidelity, a wreath was placed on his vacant pew. He was a consistent Christian and lived his beliefs. He prepared his fires so it was not necessary to light fires for cooking on Sunday. He lived the Golden Rule when in these days when that is not easy. His live was one of simplicity and his influence never for bad but always for good. He was always in jovial spirits and exemplified the joys of Christian life.
He was born in Missouri in 1847, one of a family of 7 brothers and 2 sisters coming to California in 1873, locating first in Lake County. He came to Winters in 1880 when the town was but five years young. With the exception of seven years spent in the southern part of the state, Winters was has been his home ever since. Six children were born to them, his wife passing away in 1889. Three children survive. They are A.B. Freeman of Winters, A.C. Freeman of Woodland and Mrs. Agnes Boles of Pomona. There are 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
He joined the Union Army as a volunteer and saw hard service in the Missouri campaign.
At the graveside, services were held by the Winters Post Charles McDonald commander.
The firing squad and bugler sounded taps was from the unit and the National Guard from Woodland.
Pallbearers were W.D. Overhouse, F.E. Wilson, H.E. Mermod, Dan Felix, N.A. McArthur and W.I. Baker. W.C. McNary was in charge.
Relatives in attendance from out of town were James B. Appleby, a half-brother of Merced, Mrs. C.B. Boles and her two daughters from Pomona, William Freeman and wife from Rocklin, and Avery C Freeman and family from Woodland.

FREEMAN
Zelma 'Maxine' Freeman
Zelma "Maxine" Freeman died Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at age 89.
Mrs. Freeman was born April 22, 1916 in Grafton. She had been a long-time resident of Yolo County. During World War II she worked in a bakery. She later was owner/operator of Smitty's Pancake House along with her husband, Gerald "Jerry" Robert Freeman. She was a lifetime member of Oliveview Rebekah Lodge No. 411 of Fair Oaks and volunteered for the Rebekah's Children's Home for orphans.
Survivors include her children, Stephen John Freeman of Wenatchee, Wash. and Roberta May Schofield of Coronado; her nieces, Donna Bristow, Cynthia Roye, Susan Honkanen and Joanie Freeman and her nephews, Teddy, Jerry, Bobby Honkanen and Tom Freeman.
The family requests memorials in Mrs. Freeman's name be directed to the American Cancer Society.
Services: Graveside services are scheduled for noon Friday, May 20 at Wenatchee City Cemetery. Betts Funeral Services of Wenatchee, Wash. is assisting the family with arrangements.
FRENCH
Norma Jean French
Norma Jean French died on Saturday, July 9, 2005, at her Woodland home. She was 73.
Born July 6, 1932, in Pueblo, Colo., to Arthur and Amy (Franks) Smedley, her family moved to California when she was 3 years old. She attended Bay Area schools through high school, graduating from Balboa High School in San Francisco, class of 1950. She continued her education at UC Berkeley.
She gained employment with Bank of America, where she worked until her retirement in 1988 after 20 years of service. A Woodland resident for the past 17 years, she was the assistant manager at the Westgate Apartments for the past three years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bradford French.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn French, and close family friend Harry Rowe, both of Woodland.
Private services will be held with interment at Monument Hill Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Elderly Nutrition Program of Yolo County, 40 N. East St., Woodland, CA 95776.
