Eleanor Kay Craig Friedman “Kay” (2nd of 2 obituaries)
Our beloved and special Mother and Grandmother passed peacefully. She joins her parents, Dr. Charles W. and Maurine L. Craig, her brother H. Rockwell 'Bud' Craig, her husband, Dr. Melvin Friedman and her much-loved pets.
Kay is survived by sons, Steven and Alan, daughter-in-law Barbara and grandchildren, Sierra and Zachary.
Kay will be missed by her family and by her many wonderful and loving friends.
Born Eleanor Kay Craig in Oakland, Kay grew up in Piedmont before earning her B.A. degree at Chico State College.
Kay enjoyed her secretarial work for the Navy before becoming personal secretary to her future husband, Dr. Melvin Friedman, head of pathology for the then young Kaiser Hospital, Oakland. Balancing raising her family with her devotion to the hospital and the many it served, Kay remained with Kaiser for most of her life Ð as one of the original volunteers she would donate close to 7, 000 hours of smiles and help to doctors, patients and their families.
As a loving wife, mother, volunteer and friend to many, Kay also enjoyed hiking and parties with her fellow Sierra Club members.
Kay's last years were enjoyed as a resident of Saint Paul's Towers retirement community in Oakland, where, when she wasn't volunteering on the 22nd floor, she enjoyed living among friends and a dedicated, helpful and caring staff.
Formal services would not be in accordance with Kay's wishes Ð she preferred if anything that a contribution be made to a worthwhile cause, such as Guide Dogs for the Blind or the American Cancer Society.
“Kay's Wish”
... that we smile often, have lots of good friends and are kind and helpful to all.
