Joan L. Childs
Joan L. Childs, resident of Woodland since 1977, passed away on February 25, 2003 at the age of 76.
Born and raised in Kansas City, Mo., she had resided in California since 1953.
She is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Penelope J. and Gary W. Walgenbach of Arbuckle, Ca., Evelyn M. Childs of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Lori E. Childs and Lester Weber of Newport News, Va.
She was the proud grandmother of Carolyn M. Jones of Davis, Ca., Beryl L. Childs and Gwen E. Bushnell of Idaho Falls, Idaho, James H. Wilkendorf serving in the U.S. Navy, Holly E. Wilkendorf (deceased), and Benjamin Q. Childs-Weber and Dorothy A. Childs-Weber of Newport News, VA.
She is remembered with fondness by her former husband, James L. Childs, his wife, Louise, their family in Irving, Texas, and by the staff at Alderson's Convalescent Hospital in Woodland where she had resided since 1991.
The family is grateful to the staff of Woodland Memorial Hospital for their exceptional care and thoughtfulness during her brief hospitalization.
Arrangements are pending and the family requests that remembrances be directed to the charity of the donor's choice in lieu of flowers.
CHIN
Kim Loy Chin
Kim Loy Chin, a 35-year resident of Davis, died June 26, 2004. She was 62.
Born Aug. 1, 1941 in Phoenix, she was raised in San Francisco with her eight brothers and sisters. She attended UC Berkeley and graduated from the UC San Francisco School of Pharmacy in 1964.
After raising her family, she returned to the practice of pharmacy and worked for 14 years until her death.
A golfer and tennis player, she spent recent years traveling the world with her family.
She was preceded in death by her father, Wing How Yee; mother, Wong Yuen Yee; and younger brother, Yale Kee Yee.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Chin of Davis; sons, Mark of Alameda, Jeff of Santa Clara and Greg and his wife Mimi of El Dorado Hills; and grandsons, Grant and Andrew of El Dorado Hills.
She is also survived by her siblings, Toy San Tom (Stephen), Yale Hong Yee (Letitia), Toy Kim Yuen (Vincent), Mimi Chin (Henry), Sue Pane Lee (Parke), Benjamin Yee (Candace) and Bonnie Lowe (Dennis), as well as 31 nieces and nephews and 36 grandnieces and grandnephews.
A celebration of her life will begin at 3 p.m. Friday at the El Macero Country Club, 44571 Clubhouse Drive in El Macero.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances in her name be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368-2454.
CHINN
Anita Lucero Chinn
Anita Lucero Chinn died June 14, 2001, in Sacramento. Born July 26, 1945, to Ysidro and Annie Lucero, she was 55.
She was the devoted wife of 35 years to Doug Chinn. She was the loving mother to Toby and Charlie Garcia, Bonnie Chinn Kirby, Dougie and Joey Chinn; grandmother to Sherri Chinn, Erick Crockenberg, Loretta Kirby, Audrey Chinn, Christina, Demara, Violet and C.J. Garcia; mother-in-law to James Kirby, Callie, Cody, Daryn, Melissa and Wendy; sister to Ysidro and Joey Lucero.
She was a very kindhearted person, who always opened her home to a friend in need. Those who met her called her mom or grandmother.
A service will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St.
CHIULOS
Bess Joan Chiulos (1st of 2 obituaries)
Bess Joan Chiulos died in Woodland Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at age 82.
Mrs. Chiulos was born Sept. 17, 1922 in Woodland to Theodore and Helen (Canellias) Stathopul. She had been a Yolo County resident for 71 years. She attended Holy Rosary Academy grammar school in Woodland and graduated from Amundsen High School in Chicago. She then went on to study at the Institute of Modern Business in Chicago and the Chicago Art Institute. She worked as a fashion coordinator for five years and then returned to Woodland where she worked as an administrative secretary at the Woodland Clinic for 13 years. She was also a lifetime member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Woodland.
Survivors include Mrs. Chiulos' daughters, Ellen Chiulos and her husband Rick Frassetto of San Francisco and Cathy Norcott and her husband Dave of Auburn; her son, Nicholas E. Chiulos and his wife Nanette Maysonave of Pacific Grove; her granddaughter, Gina Frassetto of San Francisco; her grandsons, Matthew and Adam Norcott of Auburn; and her sisters, Katherine Stathopul and Julie Wahl, both of Woodland. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Ernest Chiulos.
The family requests memorials in Mrs. Chiulos' name be directed to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Desert Mountain Chapter, 3877 N. Seventh St., Phoenix, Ariz. 85014.
Services: Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors is assisting the family with arrangements.
Bess Joan Chiulos (2nd of 2 obits.)
Bess Joan Chiulos, age 82, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2005. Born in Woodland on Sept. 17, 1922, Bess was the middle of three daughters born to Theodore and Helen (Canellias) Stathopul.
Bess attended Holy Rosary Academy, and in 1936 moved with her family to Chicago, where she graduated from Amundsen High School and the Institute of Modern Business. Bess also studied fashion design at the Chicago Art Institute. In Chicago, Bess worked in the fashion department of the Earl Ludgin Advertising Agency. In 1946, the family returned to Woodland where Bess was employed by the Woodland Clinic.
Bess marriage Ernest N. Chiulos of Roseville on June 5, 1949 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Woodland. The couple settled in Woodland where Bess became a full-time homemaker and mother of three children.
In 1975, when her children were grown, Bess returned to work at the Woodland Clinic until her retirement in 1985. Upon her retirement, the doctors for whom she worked presented her with a trip to Greece. Bess and Ernie thoroughly enjoyed visiting the homeland.
Bess' life revolved around family events and activities. She enjoyed frequent vacations at the family cottage in Pacific Grove, taking walks along the shore with Ernie. Bess loved to read, garden and cook for her family. She was extremely close to her two sisters, who also reside in Woodland.
Bess and Ernie were marriage for 53 years, and had a wonderful 50th anniversary celebration. Ernie passed away on June 30, 2002. Bess will be greatly missed by those who survive her, including her son Nicholas Chiulos and daughter-in-law Nanette Maysonave of Pacific Grove; daughter Ellen Chiulos, son-in-law Richard Frassetto and granddaughter Gina of San Francisco; daughter Catherine Norcott, son-in-law David Norcott and grandsons Matthew and Adam of Auburn; sisters Katherine Stathopul and Julie Wahl of Woodland; nephew Craig Wahl of Sacramento; nephew Christopher Wahl, his wife Traci Brandon, and their daughters Lexi and Lindsey of Phoenix.
Bess will always remain in the hearts of her family and friends. She is at peace now, happily reunited with her beloved Ernie.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2005 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 515 Second St., Woodland. Private inurnment will occur at a later date. Kraft Brothers Funeral Directors of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Bess' name to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Desert Mountain States Chapter, 3877 N. 7th St., Suite 300, Phoenix, Ariz. 85014. Bess' wish was to help all children battling these diseases.
CHIULOS
Ernest N. Chiulos
Ernest N. Chiulos, age 78, passed away peacefully June 30, 2002, at Woodland Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Roseville on April 18, 1924, to Nicholas and Diamando (Kotsifas) Chiulos, who had emigrated from Greece, Ernie was the youngest of six children.
Ernie, who graduated from Roseville High School in 1941, enjoyed acting in drama productions and was an accomplished violinist in the school orchestra. He continued to enjoy classical music throughout his life.
After enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943, Ernie received training as a pharmacist's mate and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division serving as a hospital corpsman in the battles of Guadalcanal and Okinawa. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor, the Purple Heart battle wounds at Okinawa, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal, the Victory Medal and the American Area Citation among other commendations.
After his separation from military service, Ernie met Bess Stathopul of Woodland. They were marriage on June 5, 1949, in a Greek Orthodox wedding ceremony conducted at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Woodland.
Ernie spent most of his career in the retail grocery business. He was well known in the community as the manager of the Stop-n-Shop Supermarket in Woodland for 25 years.
An active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Woodland since 1949, Ernie served at various times as a member of the church choir and vestry.
In his leisure and during retirement, Ernie enjoyed the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, giving advice, acting as "Mr. Fix-it" for family and friends, gardening and taking walks along the coast of Pacific Grove.
Ernie is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bess (Stathopul) Chiulos; son, Nicholas Chiulos and daughter-in-law Nanette Maysonave of Pacific Grove; daughter, Ellen Chiulos, son-in-law Rick Frassetto and granddaughter Gina of San Francisco; daughter, Cathy, son-in-law David Norcott and grandsons Matthew and Adam of Auburn; sisters, Kay Theros and Pauline Lourentzos of Sacramento; brother, Andy Chiulos of Roseville; sisters-in-law, Kay Stathopul and Julie Wahl of Woodland; and numerous nieces and nephews including Craig Wahl of Sacramento and Christopher Wahl of San Rafael.
Ernie will always remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m., Saturday, July 13, 2002, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 515 Second St., Woodland. Private inurnment will occur at a later date.
The family requests contributions in Ernie's memory be made to the St. Luke's Episcopal church Endowment Fund or to the Woodland Memorial Hospital Foundation.

CHRISS
Bessie L. Chriss
Bessie L. Chriss died of natural causes on April 3, 2000, at her home near Woodland. Born on Feb. 19, 1914, in Tupelo, Okla., to Lola (Miller) and Homer Perry, she was 86.
She was the oldest of eight children.
She was an accomplished seamstress and began sewing for her siblings at the age of 8.
She was marriage to S.J. Chriss on Dec. 31, 1932. She and her husband came to California during the Great Depression and made their home in Yolo County for 60 years.
She was employed by Breit's Department store in Woodland for a number of years in the yardage department. Later she worked for the JC Penney Co. at the Main Street store until her retirement in 1979 in the same capacity. Many customers came to the store to ask her advice on sewing problems.
After retirement she continued to work at her farm raising livestock and was active until the age of 80. It was not unusual to see her on top of her barn fixing the roof in her 80s.
She loved gardening and continued this hobby until her death. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of her life. Her 86th birthday was recently celebrated by her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Evelyn Zielesch and her husband Fred; son, Larry Chriss and his wife Jan; six grandchildren, Greg Zielesch, Derek Zielesch, Tanya Johnson, Traci Cline, Mark Chriss and Steve Chriss, all of Woodland; 11 great-grandchildren, Rex, Lindsey, Dane and Danielle Zielesch, Cache Zielesch, Christi and Brandi Cline, Rodney Gladney, Chase, Cody and Casey Smith and Jordynne Brown, all of Woodland; three sisters, Martha Gage, Lil Trumbull of Woodland, Dovie Lewis of Stockton; and a brother, Roy Perry of Ceres.
She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, S.J. 'Buster' Chriss; her parents; and three brothers, Lloyd Perry, Barney Perry and Russel Perry.
Viewing and visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at McNary's Chapel in Woodland. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Monument Hill Cemetery.
